The Presidency says contrary to views in certain quarters, the International Oil Companies (IOC) are not exiting the country, rather they are rebalancing and refocusing on deep water.

Mrs Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

Verheijen, who was speaking on the second year anniversary of the Tinubu’s administration, said that, while the IOC are rebalancing, the Nigerian independents (local players) are taking the lead in onshore.

‘Indigenous firms are gaining capacity, they have community credibility and in the long term, we expect them to scale regionally and globally,” she said

Verheijen said the growing capacity of indigenous firms is evident in their ability to acquire divested assets from IOC.

She said the country attained an increase in indigenous equity in gas, from 69 per cent to 83 per cent.

The special adviser urged African investors, DFIs, banks, pension funds, and sovereigns, to be strategic in focus, and strive to fill the vacuum left by International Oil

She also charged industry leaders across the continent, to take a cue from Nigeria, by ensuring that Africa moves beyond appeals for support, but become an investment destination.

Speaking on the legacy she would leave behind, Verheijen said she would like to see more Nigerians have energy, high-paying jobs and the capacity not only to diversify and grow the economy but compete favourably globally.

“I am committed to institutional reforms that endure, that ensure that we remain and continue to grow as an investment-grade country.

“I am also committed to transparency, demonstrable results, life-transforming results, that we’re not going to be just energy-rich but that we’re going to be energy-secured and globally competitive,” she said.

Verheijen thanked President Tinubu for giving her the opportunity to serve in the most critical sector of the economy. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Yargote Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has announced plans to inaugurate a groundbreaking self-empowerment training programme targeting teenage boys across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The initiative aims to address the long-overlooked challenges faced by boys and steer them toward positive societal roles.

Mrs Anna-Hussaini Pai, Executive Director and Founder of the foundation, revealed the plans during the screening and registration exercise at Kabusa Community.

She emphasised that the foundation intended to enrol at least 100 beneficiaries in each community it visited under the programme titled “Empower the Boy Child Project.”

“This programme is designed not only to impart skills but to foster self-discovery and help the boys realise their full potential.

“Through this after-school programme, we will offer both formal and informal education, teaching essential life skills often neglected in traditional schooling, such as personal hygiene, emotional intelligence, and societal responsibilities,” Pai explained.

Volunteers of the foundation highlighted the critical need for the initiative, noting that the boy child had been neglected in many empowerment efforts to date.

Miss Adze Inki, a volunteer, stressed, “We are determined to change the narrative and restore dignity to the boy child.

“Many societal issues stem from boys lacking guidance during their formative years. This project seeks to redirect that energy positively.

“The empowerment programme, which will run from June through November, will culminate in a summit that brings together participants to celebrate their growth and achievements.”

Mrs Hannah Ayhok, another volunteer, outlined the programme’s broad curriculum, which included lessons on family dynamics, peer pressure, community engagement, and civic duties.

“There is a damaging cultural expectation that boys should suppress their emotions, leading to harmful stereotypes and behaviours.

“Our programme encourages boys to express themselves healthily and to embrace their roles responsibly,”Ayhok noted.

Mrs Theresa Reng, also a volunteer, expressed concern over the number of boys aimlessly roaming streets without direction.

“This initiative offers hope by providing mentorship and counselling, giving these boys a chance to rethink their paths and become productive members of society.”

She said with the “Empower the Boy Child Project,” Yargote Foundation hoped to spark lasting change, empowering boys to become responsible men who contribute positively to their communities. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

FRSC intensifies nationwide crackdown on overloading

FRSC intensifies nationwide crackdown on overloading

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has directed its commanding officers to step up nationwide enforcement against overloading by vehicles and ensure public safety.

The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

Ogungbemide dismissed accusations that the FRSC was not enforcing against overloading, describing it as “not a fact established.”

“There is no place where you visit today where you won’t find overloaded vehicles being impounded for one infraction or the other.

“Evidence of ongoing enforcement is regularly shared on FRSC’s social media platforms, including recent arrests made across various locations.

“In 2024, between January and December, the Corps impounded overloaded vehicles and arrested offenders in all the 12 zones of the FRSC.

“For example, 777 overloaded vehicles were impounded in Kaduna Zone, while 500, 489, 223, 489 and 89 vehicles were impounded in Sokoto, Oshogbo, Bauchi, Lagos and Yola Zones respectively.

“Others include 289, 356, 140, 1,266, 440 and 157 overloaded vehicles impounded in Jos, Benin, PortHarcourt, Abuja, Ilorin and Enugu Zones respectively.

“This brings to the total of overloaded vehicles impounded as 5,217. So, this is ongoing and we won’t relent until road traffic crashes is curbed to the barest minimum on Nigerian roads,” he said.

Ogungbemide, however, acknowledged the challenge of “recalcitrant offenders” who persist in overloading vehicles in spite of repeated arrests adding that the corps conducted daily enforcement operations nationwide.

He said, “we have not relented in advocacy, especially towards commercial drivers and commuters, to discourage entering overloaded vehicles.”

On measures taken to curb the practice, the CPEO stressed that enforcement remained the primary tool, backed by sustained public enlightenment campaigns.

He added that commuters play a critical role in supporting the corps’ efforts by refusing to patronise overloaded vehicles.

“We’ve been doing this for 37 years, but unfortunately, some drivers are still bent on violating traffic safety rules. So, we are enforcing more and engaging the public directly.

“We also believe that if there’s no market for these drivers, it won’t be enticing for them. But when passengers are available, they take advantage and overload,” he said.

The FRSC spokesman also revealed that special directives had been given to command units, particularly in northern regions, to crack down on “mixed loading”.

Ogungbemide explained that “mix loading” which was the transportation of passengers alongside goods and animals in the same vehicle posed serious risks.

“As the country enters a busy travel season, the FRSC has increased its surveillance and engagement efforts to ensure safe transit for all road users,” he assured. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) says it aims to raise N100 billion over a period of five years to support cancer survivors and promote cancer research in Nigeria.

The President of the society, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, disclosed this in commemoration of National Cancer Survivors’ Day.

Omonisi said that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the society had recently approved the establishment of the NCS National Cancer Intervention Fund (NCS-NCIF), which would be launched in July.

According to him, the fund will be managed by an independent governing council, chaired by global health financial expert, Dr Gafar Alawode.

Other appointees include Dr Uchechukwu Nwokwu, Coordinator of the National Cancer Control Programme, who will serve as the Vice-Chairman, as well as two cancer survivors, Ms Tinu Lawal and Ms Chioma Ikejiani, who will represent the interests of survivors on the council.

Highlighting the significance of the day, Omonisi said June 1 is observed globally to celebrate cancer survivors, connect with them, and assess various survivorship programmes.

“Today, I honour all cancer survivors in Nigeria, as well as their families and caregivers. We must celebrate those who have successfully gone through cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“Cancer survivorship, to me, is about helping people lead full and healthy lives after a cancer diagnosis. May the good Lord grant all cancer survivors more strength, long life, and a brighter, healthier future. Amen.”

He described cancer survivors and their families as vital partners in the field of oncology, adding that they form one of the key pillars of the society’s strategic agenda.

To reinforce this, he said the NCS had begun fully incorporating survivors into its governance structure.

As part of this effort, the NEC also approved the creation of the Nigerian Coalition for Cancer Survivors (NCCS), an arm of the NCS that will serve as the collective voice of cancer survivors in the country.

In addition, he announced plans to launch the “Employ Cancer Survivors” initiative to tackle unemployment among survivors.

While reiterating the society’s commitment to prioritising survivor-related issues, Omonisi noted that the NCS was engaging the Federal Government on the high cost and unavailability of critical cancer medications in the country.

“We are engaging NICRAT on the National Cancer Health Fund (NCHF), and we are grateful to the Director-General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment for his commitment to ensuring the speedy disbursement of the fund to all beneficiaries,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that National Cancer Survivors Day is set aside to celebrate and honour the strength and resilience of cancer survivors.

The aim is to recognise and celebrate the milestones of cancer survivors, raise awareness about cancer survivorship, support vital cancer services and create a sense of community among survivors, families, and care teams. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Minna, June 1, 2025(NAN) Gov. Umar Bago of Niger has called for partnership with the Dangote Group in the exploration and development of the discovered oil blocks in Niger State’s Bida Basin.

Bago said that the group would significantly contribute to the exploration project with its proven expertise in the energy sector in the country.

The governor said this while addressing industry leaders at the Dangote Special Day event at the Niger National Trade Fair in Minna on Saturday.

Bago said that the state was “open for business” regarding Bida Basin oil development, calling for private sector investment and expertise in the state’s hydrocarbon exploration.

The governor, represented by Hamza Sarki, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment, acknowledged Dangote Group’s proven capacity in executing large-scale industrial projects.

He cited the successful delivery of the world’s largest single-train refinery in Nigeria as evidence of its technical expertise and operational excellence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dangote Group is the major sponsor of the 2025 Niger State National Trade Fair.

The Governor described the Bida Basin oil discovery as Niger State’s ticket to economic prosperity, and win-win for partnership with relevant players in the oil sector.

A 2023 geological survey report identified 17 commercially viable oil blocks in Niger, with estimated hydrocarbon reserves projected to sustain production for approximately 70 years.

The Bida Basin, stretching across parts of Niger and Kwara States, has been identified as a promising sedimentary basin with hydrocarbon potential.

Representative of the Dangote Group, Mr Hashem Ahmed, said the company was investing massively in Niger State, adding that it was ready to partner the state to develop its potential.

“The Dangote Rice Mill in Wushishi when completed will enhance local rice production and drastically reduce post-harvest losses. We are also working closely with the Governor’s Office on the Niger Food Initiative—a game-changing agricultural programme.

“We have committed to serving as a guaranteed off taker for 1 million metric tons of paddy rice, creating a stable market and encouraging further private investment.”

Ahmed commended the proactive measures taken by the Bago administration to foster a business-friendly environment and stimulate private sector engagement in economic growth.

He said that the government’s strategic policies, such as the planned establishment of a Free Trade Zone, demonstrate a clear commitment to attracting investment, enhancing trade, and positioning Niger as a hub for industrial and agricultural development.

“For Dangote Group and the broader Organized Private Sector, these initiatives represent a significant and encouraging step forward.

‘’The Free Trade Zone provides a competitive advantage by streamlining business operations, reducing bottlenecks, and creating a conducive ecosystem for large-scale investments,” he said.(NAN)

Agric: Women group seeks storage, processing infrastructure investment

Agric: Women group seeks storage, processing infrastructure investment

By Felicia Imohimi

Small-Scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON) has urged the three tiers of government to invest in community-level storage and processing infrastructure.

SWOFON said the gesture would reduce reliance on middlemen and improve income retention capacity of smallholder farmers.

The organisation made the call in Abuja at the presentation of a Community Scorecard tagged, “Smallholder Women Farmers (SHWFs) Access to Post-harvest Loss Reduction Support in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between 2022 to 2024”.

Experts say smallholding or smallholder is a small farm operating under a small-scale agriculture model.

The scorecard was presented by Chika Orji, Lead Co-Creator and Team-Lead, Scaling Up Public Investment in Agriculture Project (SUPIA).

Orji said data on the scorecard revealed that 66.7 per cent SHWFs from Abuja Municipal, Bwari and Kuje Area Councils rated government post-harvest losses support as inadequate.

She said based on the scorecard challenges faced by SHWFs included middlemen taking advantage of the farmers due to lack of post-harvest losses reduction facilities or support.

Other challenges, according to her, are insufficient processing equipment such as rice milling and “garri” processing machines, grain dryers, limited access to good road infrastructure and absence of warehouse facilities.

“Other challenges are unavailability of solar panel, deep freezers and cold room and other storage facilities for livestock; reduced presence in the number of off-takers for market opportunities.

“Also, lack of access to markets and linkages, absence of warehouse, insecurity and safety concern, weak government interventions through policy, poor inclusivity of women in decision making,” she said.

Orji also recommended that government at all levels should prioritise addressing insecurity and mitigate farmer-herder conflicts within farming communities.

The team lead further recommended for investment in the construction and rehabilitation of rural access roads to farming areas in order to ensure food security.

“Government interventions should be expanded beyond tomato processing to cover a wider range of crops, livestock value chains and agro-processing skills for women farmers.

“Government policy must be changed to emphasise agriculture in such a way that access to infrastructure reduces post-harvest losses,” she said.

She said records indicated that though from 2022 to 2024 there were budgets for agricultural extension and post-harvest loss reduction in FCT, there was no available information regarding actual release of the funds.

“We recommend that both local and sub-national governments must ensure full implementation of budget lines dedicated to post-harvest loss reduction.

“We recommend that government should promote inclusive financing mechanisms such as grants, low interest loans or revolving funds tailored for SHWFs and their cooperatives,” she said.

Orji said the scorecard was co-created through a participatory process led by AAN and SWOFON under the SUPIA across FCT.

She said the objective was to assess SHWFs access to post-harvest loss reduction support in the territory and advocate improved access to post-harvest loss reduction support by the farmers.

“It is meant to provide information of SHWFs rating/scoring on access to post-harvest loss reduction support to government officials, the media and the public.

“Also, it’s meant to strengthen women’s voice in governance by building their capacity to influence agricultural policies and advocate targeted interventions that reduce post-harvest losses,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Why there’s partial disruption of water supply in FCT – Wike

Why there’s partial disruption of water supply in FCT – Wike

By Philip Yatai

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says the disruption of water supply in Abuja city and some satellite towns is due to the ongoing major rehabilitation of two water treatment plants.

Wike disclosed this in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr Lere Olayinka, in Abuja on Sunday.

He said that the treatment plants were among the four facilities responsible for the production and supply of water to FCT residents.

The minister said that due to the ongoing rehabilitation of the plants, water supply from the two functioning treatment plants would be rationed for a period of two weeks.

“What is being experienced is a partial and not a total shutdown of the entire water supply to the residents of FCT, as two of the water treatment plants are still in operation.

“SCC Nigeria Ltd. is, however, working 24/7 to ensure that the rehabilitation are concluded before the scheduled time.

“Residents are, therefore, urged to store enough water to cater for their needs during this period, as supply will be rationed,’’ he said.

Wike appealed to the residents to bear with the FCT Administration, assuring that the rehabilitation, when completed, would improve water supply in the FCT.

He, however, said that the two plants undergoing rehabilitation would be temporarily powered to supply water to residents during Sallah celebrations.

“The FCT Water Board operates four water treatment plants of 30,000m3/hour, which are divided into Phases 1, 2, 3 and 4.

“As a result of the inefficiency of the plants, which are currently producing below their installed capacity, a contract was awarded for their rehabilitation to Messrs SCC Nigeria Ltd.

“The rehabilitation works have reached an advanced stage on Phases 1 and 2 where the electro-mechanical equipment, which is the prime mover of the treatment plants, are to be replaced and reinstalled.

“This warranted a total shutdown of the two plants, which are interconnected.

“However, phases 3 and 4 water treatment plants are operational but won’t sustain, meet or cater for the demands of the populace,” he said.

Wike said that the Water Board had made a rationing time-table by alternating between lines 1 and 2 of the distribution network.

This, according to him, will minimise the adverse effects of inadequate water supply to FCT residents. (NAN)

Saudi Arabia, through its National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), has issued heatwave warnings for Hajj 2025, urging pilgrims to take precautions amid soaring daytime temperatures between 40°C and 47°C.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NCM has forecasted challenging weather, including high temperatures, potential thunderstorms, and reduced visibility.

With temperatures projected to reach up to 47°C, Saudi authorities said that they are implementing comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all pilgrims.

According to the NCM, humidity levels are expected to fluctuate between 15 per cent and 60 per cent, potentially intensifying discomfort for pilgrims.

“Northerly to northwesterly winds, blowing at speeds of 25 to 35 km/h, may raise dust and significantly lower visibility, especially in open areas and along highways leading to the holy sites.

“Additionally, there is a possibility of thunderstorms forming over the Taif highlands between the 8th and 13th of Dhu Al Hijjah.

“This may extend to Mecca and surrounding areas, accompanied by strong downdrafts that could worsen dusty conditions.” it said.

In response to these forecasts, the NCM advised the pilgrims to take necessary precautions.

“Pilgrims are advised to stay well-hydrated, use protective gear such as umbrellas, and adhere to official weather updates.

“883 air conditioning units, 244 mist fans, and 3,139 ventilation fans have been installed throughout the holy sites to enhance comfort amid the desert heat.

“Additionally, 432 fragrance diffusers will infuse the air with calming aromas, enhancing the overall atmosphere of tranquillity and reverence,” it said.

It said that the recently inaugurated cooled pedestrian walkway in Makkah was part of the broader “Cooled Roads Initiative”.

“It is aimed at reducing surface temperatures and enhancing comfort for the millions of pilgrims during the intense summer heat.

“Mobility has also been addressed with the deployment of 400 electric carts, providing additional support for elderly and physically limited pilgrims in completing their rites,” it said.

On the health precautions, the Saudi Ministry of Health had confirmed five cases of heat exhaustion among the more than one million pilgrims who have arrived to perform Hajj rituals.

According to the ministry, all affected individuals received immediate medical attention and are currently in stable condition.

“Health teams are on high alert to respond swiftly to similar cases as part of the Kingdom’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of pilgrims.

“Symptoms of heat exhaustion include headache, excessive sweating, nausea, dizziness, and severe thirst.

“If not treated promptly, heat exhaustion can escalate to heat stroke, a life-threatening medical emergency within 10 to 15 minutes,” the health ministry said.

To combat heatstroke risks, the ministry announced a series of measures in coordination with the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites.

These include planting more than 10,000 trees, installing 400 additional water coolers and misting fans, and expanding shaded pedestrian pathways to protect pilgrims from extreme heat. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
