The National Centre for Control of Small Arms and Large Weapons (NCCSALW) on Wednesday sensitised joint border agencies in Seme on the proliferation of illicit arms.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NCCSALW was established on May 3, 2021 under the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA).

NAN also reports that the centre is mandated to prevent and control the proliferation of small and large weapons in collaboration with stakeholders toward strengthening peace and security in Nigeria.

Speaking shortly after the meeting with all security agencies, Mr Sola Akinlade, the South West Zonal Coordinator, NCCSALW, said that the meeting was held in Seme because it is an international border connecting Nigeria to many countries.

According to him, what the agency is doing is to control the proliferation of illicit arms.

“The ones they are not manufacturing locally will have to come through the border, not necessarily by air but through the land borders because the border is so long and porous.

“Today, we have to come to talk with head of security agencies here to synergise with us for quick detection and reporting some of the arms passing through this corridor.

“So far, from what they have said, they have promised to synergise and direct their operatives on the need to be more vigilant at the border so that things will not cross or enter.

“They are the action agencies, they are the ones to do it, our own is to collect the data and do the needful, by destroying it, profiling it and keeping it safe and not getting back to the society,” he said.

Akinlade, a retired director in the Department of State Service, said the centre had received thousands of illicit arms from the military and police in 2023.

“I want to tell you that in the last one year, the military has given us thousands of illicit arms which were collected through the clearance operations.

‘The Inspector General of Police, recently, through all the Commissioners of Police have come with all guns that are not under investigation to the headquarter which was handed over to the national coordinator.

“Same with the Air Force, all the arms were gathered in Lagos and were taken to Abuja to be handed over, the same thing with the naval.

“We have been effectively working in the sense that whatever released to us can not get back to the society,” he said.

The zonal coordinator said that the visit was very important in view of the strategic location of Seme Border which is the official gateway to Nigerians in the south west.

“All security agencies are the critical stakeholders whom the centre looks up to for collaboration.

“The NCCSALVW is to work in synergy with all security agencies through intelligence sharing and also in operations that bothers on recovery of illicit firearms from groups or individuals that engage in criminality and local fabrication,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Timi Bomodi, the Controller of Seme Command Area of Nigeria Customs Service, said the issue of small arms and light weapon is critical to well-being of Nigerians.

Bomodi, who is the chairman, Joint Border Security Committee in Seme, said the committee was particularly concerned with not only enabling trade but also ensuring that they do all they can to secure well-being and safety of Nigerians.

“The critical area that needs to be addressed by the zonal coordinator is the proliferation of small arms and light weapon.

“We know that because of the very nature of this item, it is easy to conceal and apart from those that are manufactured locally, there are still few weapon that are getting to our community.

“This should be our major concern,” he said.

NAN reports that officials from Nigerian Navy, Army, Immigration Service, Port Health, Police and Department of State Service attended the sensitisation programme. (NAN)www.nannews.ng

“My desire was to have comparable children’s hospitals as we have in the U.S such as the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburg, Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania; National Children’s Hospital of Washington DC, to mention a few.

“In Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, the above desire has materialised because we are driven by the vision “to be the foremost pediatric and maternal care hospital in sub-Saharan Africa”.

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has called for more support from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the International Trade Centre (ITC), to boost women led export businesses in the country.

The Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of NEPC, Nonye Ayeni, said this at the SheTrades Nigeria Hub Interactive Session with the WTO and ITC in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria( NAN) reports that SheTrades Nigeria Hub was initiated in 2016 to deliver tailored capacity building and business generation activities for women in Nigeria.

Ayeni said: “we will also use this opportunity to appeal to WTO and ITC for more support for the interest of the women and interest of Nigeria in general.

“I thank the WTO and indeed ITC team for your support over the years, a lot has been done.

“I appreciate your contributions to the success of NEPC and the success of Nigeria, especially as it relates to export and what you have done specifically for women.

“We have seen women who were not doing anything and suddenly they are able to provide for their families.

“We all know that once you train a women, you have trained a community, you have trained a whole nation. So kudos to all the women, let’s leverage on this opportunity and make sure that we do our best,” Ayeni said.

According to the NEPC boss, the focus of the event is to strengthen further, the partnership between WTO, ITC and NEPC as the host-implementing agency for the SHE Trade hub.

“Through this collaboration, we are working with the private and public sector and women in export development programme have recorded some successes.

“In terms of provision of better trade, opportunities for women engagement with women to build a support network and access to information and resources for women led Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs).

“Knowledge and experience sharing for successful female exporters to provide guidance and mentorship for upcoming women entrepreneurs among others.

“I am delighted to say that since 2016, NEPC has registered 29,000 exporters while almost about 8, 000 are women and the numbers are increasing.”

While reiterating other programmes by the council for women, Ayeni said over 4, 000 women had benefited from the SheTrade programme, which was a game changer that would be leveraged on.

Meanwhile, the WTO Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okojo-Iweala, emphasised the important of trade to economic development of any nation.

“Trade has helped to lift more than one billion people in the world out of poverty.

“A research we have done at the World Trade Organisation shows that women who export, earn almost three times more than those who sell domestic goods.

“So being able to export increases your well-being, your living standards, your income, and you can help your family and the nation more.

“And that is why we came to Nigeria to inaugurate a series of programmes that we hope will be beneficial to the country, including our women,” she said.

According to Okojo-Iweala, one of the most important things to consider in export is meeting certain standards and quality expectations of a country.

The WTO director-general reiterated the commitment of the organisation in supporting women businesses to achieve standardisation and get certification for their exported products.

Okonjo-Iweala recalled that the organisation recently inaugurated a 50 billion dollar fund programme aimed at helping women trading digitally.

“So many people are trading digitally, e-commerce, what we are trying to do is to use this one to help you add a scale of your business; improve the quality of what you doing.

“So I implore you not to get discouraged because I know you meet all kinds of obstacles along the way,” she said.

For her part, the Deputy Executive Director, ITC, Dorathy Tembo, also reiterated the importance of trade.

According to her, no country has been able to develop without substantial trade and Nigeria is not left out.

She expressed willingness of the ITO to continue to partner with Nigeria to ensure standard and certification of their exported agricultural products. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

An international NGO, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) has awarded N48 million to 16 businesses in four states to enhance food security and nutrition in the country.

Dr Micheal Ojo, GAIN Country Director, said at the Micro-Grant Funding for Nutritious Business Award ceremony in Abuja, that the award was in recognition of the businesses’ innovative ideas towards enhancing access to nutritious food and diets for Nigerians.

“The 16 businesses we recognised today have not only demonstrated outstanding dedication to the cause of nutrition, but have also passed a rigorous multilayered evaluation to demonstrate their commitment and expertise in furthering this worthy mission.

“The microgrant funding of N3 million each, totaling N48 million, is not just a financial award but a testament of the belief we place in these entrepreneurs.

“It is an investment in the future of food security and nutrition in Nigeria.

“With this funding, these businesses are poised to scale-up operations, improve food safety standards, and most importantly, increase the availability, accessibility and consumption of nutritious foods across the country.

“It will directly contribute to food security by ensuring that more households have access to affordable, nutritious food options, which are essential for healthy living and sustainable development,” Ojo said.

He explained that through its Strengthening Nutrition in Priority Staples Project (SNIPS), the awardees from Benue, Kaduna, Oyo and Nasarawa States had transitioned to nutrient-enriched varieties of cassava, sweet potatoes and maize.

The country director added that they had ventured into the processing of biofortified vitamin A cassava, vitamin A maize and orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, thereby enriching diets.

Also speaking, Murtala Dabo, Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture, Kaduna State, commended the organisation for its support towards tackling malnutrition in the country.

Dabo, represented by Shehu Dalhat, a Director in the Ministry, said that the government was committed to prioritising agriculture, adding that N24 billion was budgeted for the sector in this year’s budget.

Also, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye, Oyo State Commissioner of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the support for the organisation had improved food security and the agriculture value chain in the state.

Olaleye called for more collaboration to improve access to nutritious food and diets.

On his part, Abubakar Imam, the Nasarawa State Commissioner of Trade, Industry and Investment, reiterated its commitment to improving nutrition and food security, adding that a department for nutrition was established to ensure its success.

Prof. Moses Ogbaji, Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Benue State, urged the organisation to research and invest in African Yam Bean, which, he said, was going extinct.

Ogbaji said the African Yam Bean was underutilised, despite its immense nutritional value, which could ameliorate malnutrition in Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other activities at the award ceremony were cultural performances, conferment of awards and exhibition of some of the fortified value chains of cassava, maize, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. (NAN)

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), says collaboration is critical to enhance efficient service delivery that satisfies the yearnings and aspirations of all stakeholders.

The Registrar-General of CAC, Hussaini Magaji, said this at a One Day interactive session with customers and stakeholders in Abuja.

According to Magaji, there is a big gap between the registration process and compliance with post-registration expectations of entities.

“I want to appreciate your several interventions at various stages on this journey.

“To have in place a reliable legal framework which we collectively gave ourselves to regulate the activities of registered entities.

“You will agree with me that without regulation, the purpose of having the framework is defeated.

“We still have to work together to ensure that issues related to regulation of these entities are seamlessly implemented,” he said.

Magaji said that he was working with management of the commission to set strategic objectives that would usher in a new symbiotic relationship beneficial to all members.

“The commission under my leadership is continuously engaging with our software vendors to improve on areas that require urgent attention to make the Companies Registration Portal (CRP) perform optimally.

“This will resolve problems associated with delay in service delivery.

“The commission has also initiated the process of reviewing our operational checklist to bring it up to speed with international best practices.

“This will go a long way in simplifying our processes and also reduce the time cycle for our services and product delivery.”

Magaji said CAC was upgrading its call centre to a response centre that would attend to customer complaints and enquiries within 24 hours.

He said this would also address the anxiety of getting issues resolved not only on time, but also addressing the overall expectations of customers and stakeholders.

“I will be engaging and collaborating with all of you on a continuous basis to get inputs and suggestions from you.

“This will ensure a good experience in service delivery as we move forward on this journey,” he added.

While commending efforts of the stakeholders, Magaji reiterated the commitment of the commission to ensure it attained a status as the best Companies Registries globally. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

IFAD pledges to support Nigeria to address food crisis

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) has pledged to support Nigeria to address its current food crisis.

Dr Donald Brown, the Associate Vice President, Programme Management Department of IFAD, made the pledge when he and his team paid a courtesy visit to Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State on Wednesday.

Brown disclosed that IFAD had about $1 billion agro investment in Nigeria in many sectors around agriculture, processing and production, adding that the organisation would help Nigeria to address food crisis.

According to him, the organisation will provide technical assistance to the government and people of Nigeria to improve food production and security

“The food crisis in Nigeria that the president recently declared, we are looking also to see how we can support the government and people to improve the situation.

“My visit to the state was purposely to inspect some of the projects done with the government of Nigeria using Enugu in the southeast.

“I am pleased to be here with my team to see if what they have on ground reflect what they had been telling us, discuss some of the issues and possibly proffer solutions,” he said.

Responding, Mbah thanked IFAD for the support it had been giving to the state.

Mbah, represented by his Deputy, Mr Ifeanyi Ossai, said the state valued the support and intervention received from the multilateral institutions and agencies in their sectors, particularly in agriculture.

“This is so important because if we want to migrate our people from poverty to economic stability, agriculture is very pivotal.

“As we are battling with high cost of food and shortage of food, this is the best time to improve agriculture.

“We thank you also because your programme tailored its approach towards farmers and smallholder farmers,” he said.

The governor, who extoled the roles of the smallholder farmers in the economy, said there was need for high level policies formulations to deal with it to accommodate the whole farmers.

“It is the aggregation of the smallholder farmers that come up to your Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and farmers now enjoy the benefit of their hardwork with access to facilities supported by IFAD.

“We look forward to more robust relationship with you to improve what you have done and sustain it. We suffer  from huge post harvest losses, hence, there is need for aggregation centres near our farm,” he appealed.

According to him, we need whatever support we can get to encourage commercial farmers with inputs, credit facilities and teach them skills.

“For a country with over 200 million people, the processing centres are not enough, but we need some high level processing centres,” he stressed. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
