President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated three Nigerian Navy Ships (NNS) – NNS SHERE, NNS FARO and NNS IKOGOSI and three AW109 Trekker helicopters: 501, 502 and 503 into the Nigerian Navy fleet.

Tinubu, speaking at the inauguration on Saturday in Lagos, said that the addition of the three Fast Patrol Boats and three maritime surveillance helicopters affirmed the country’s commitment to securing its maritime domain.

The president was represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Mr Bello Matawalle.

“The sea has remained a pillar of our nation’s economic prosperity and for the past 69 years, the Nigerian Navy has stood as the guardian of this blue territory.

“These patrol ships and helicopters are force multipliers in our fight against piracy, oil theft, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes.

“This inauguration is, therefore, a reflection of our determination to empower our institutions and protect our resources,” he said.

Tinubu assured the navy that his government would continue to prioritise its needs, saying, “as a strong navy is the cornerstone of a secure and prosperous economy”.

He commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, for his leadership in ensuring that the Nigerian Navy had pursued fleet modernisation with vigour, bridging capability gaps and restoring pride to the force.

“Today’s induction is a fruit of your strategic foresight, and I commend you, your team, and all partners who turned this vision into reality.

“I also commend the National Assembly, for its partisan commitment to funding and oversight which are instrumental to achieving this feat.

“Let us sustain this unity of purpose, for the sea does not distinguish between political lines; it demands our collective vigilance,” the president said.

Tinubu also appreciated the international allies and technical partners for their collaboration which underscored a shared truth that maritime security “knows no borders.”

“Together, we are proving that the Gulf of Guinea’s safety is not Nigeria’s burden alone but a global imperative.

“To the officers and ratings who will crew the ships and operate the helicopters, as you operate these assets, remember that the weight of Nigeria’s aspirations rests on your shoulders.

“Let us envision the future they herald: a future where our waters are impervious to criminality; where fishermen cast their nets in peace; where global trade flows unhindered through our ports,” he said.

The president said that the Nigerian Navy remained the guardian of the blue economy and urged them to sail forth with courage and know that a grateful nation stood behind them. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Nigeria must strengthen vaccine research to tackle future pandemics – Expert

Nigeria must strengthen vaccine research to tackle future pandemics – Expert

A leading vaccine expert, Dr Simon Agwale, has called for urgent investment in vaccine research infrastructure to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to tackle future pandemics.

Agwale, a global vaccine researcher and member of the international “100 Days Mission” team, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of the Inaugural Vaccine Research Retreat hosted by the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH), Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The 100 Days Mission is a project of International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat.

It is meant to prepare as much as possible so that within the first 100 days a pandemic threat is identified and relevant interventions provided in safe, effective and affordable manner.

Agwale warned that Nigeria’s lack of scientific data and local development capacity pose a serious threat to its pandemic preparedness and response.

According to him, the country should stop relying on imported vaccines and outdated production methods to solve its health challenges.

He said the establishment of genomic laboratories and animal testing facilities was essential for local production of vaccines.

“Without basic research capacity and animal testing infrastructure, it is impossible to develop vaccines.

“We must stop depending on others for scientific solutions,” he said.

He said that vaccines were the most effective public health tools, capable of eradicating diseases and preventing widespread transmission through strong population-level immunity.

“However, vaccine development requires a rigorous scientific process involving laboratory research, clinical trials, and large-scale manufacturing capabilities, he explained.

He also stressed the importance of identifying correlates of protection, and specific immune responses that confer immunity before testing vaccine candidates in humans.

He cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a clear example of how rapid vaccine development could save lives and reduce global suffering.

He said U.S. government adopted a rolling review model and funded companies upfront to speed up vaccine production timelines.

“Manufacturers were told to produce at risk. If the vaccine failed, the government would bear the loss,” he said.

This bold approach, he said, helped deliver safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines in less than a year from the start of the outbreak.

He said the experience inspired the launch of the global “100 Days Mission,” aimed at producing vaccines within 100 days of a future pandemic’s emergence.

“I am part of the international committee working on the framework,” he said.

He also clarified the science behind different vaccine platforms, explaining why side effects and immune responses vary between technologies.

He urged the Nigerian government and key stakeholders to invest in genomic labs and build robust vaccine development platforms.

“If you don’t know the genetic sequence of the disease-causing organism, you can’t make a vaccine,” he said.

He stressed the need to stop exporting samples abroad and to build self-reliance through local scientific infrastructure and expertise.

He said that Nigeria’s health security depended on how quickly it could build sustainable research systems to address local and global health threats. (NAN)  (www.nannews.ng)

Group seeks stronger protection of parrots in Nigeria

Group seeks stronger protection of parrots in Nigeria

By Fabian Ekeruche

The Wild Africa and the World Parrot Trust have called for stronger protection of parrots in Nigeria, as the world celebrates the World Parrot Day.

This is contained in a statement jointly issued by the Nigeria Representatives of the Group on Saturday in Lagos.

The statement said the call had become expedient amid the continued illegal trade of different parrot species.

“The World Parrot Day reminds us of parrots’ crucial role in ecosystems and the need to protect their habitats.

“Originating from various regions across the globe, parrots play a vital role in maintaining healthy forest ecosystems by dispersing seeds and helping forests regenerate,” it said.

The group said parrots, especially the African Grey Parrot that was once common in Nigeria’s forests, are quickly disappearing due to decades of trapping and trafficking.

The statement said in spite of the national and international laws protecting parrots, weak enforcement and exotic pet trade had continued to drive illegal activities.

It noted that over 1.2 million wild-caught grey parrots entered international trade in four decades.

The statement said 40-60 per cent die during capture and transport.

“It is estimated that the total number could be as high as three million,” said the statement.

It said that in recent months, Nigeria has recorded positive developments in its fight against the illegal trade of parrots.

“In March 2025, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) intercepted over 300 parrot heads, drawing national and international attention to the brutality of the trade.

“In early May, officials from the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the National Park Service (NPS) arrested three suspected wildlife traffickers in Abuja, who were found with live African grey parrots as well as other species.

“Meanwhile, in April, Nigeria Special Wildlife Officers seized 12 live grey parrots that were being transported via bus between Kaduna and Lagos. The rescued parrots are being rehabilitated at Pandrillus Nigeria Drill Ranch,” the statement said.

The statement quoted Dr Mark Ofua, Wild Africa’s West Africa spokesperson as saying that parrots are keystone species.

“Parrots are keystone species, intelligent, social, and ecologically crucial. Their decline reflects the health of entire ecosystems.

“Parrots are more than just brilliant colours and clever mimicry—they are vital ambassadors of our planet’s wild places.

“On the World Parrot Day, let’s honour their intelligence and resilience by protecting the forests they call home and the freedom they deserve.  May we listen, love, and never let their voices fade into silence,” Ofua said.

The statement also quoted Mr Ifeanyi Ezenwa, Nigeria Country Coordinator, World Parrot Trust, as saying that grey parrots are in serious trouble in Nigeria.

“Our research shows that grey parrots in Nigeria are in serious trouble. It’s enormously encouraging to see the intensified efforts by NESREA, NCS, and NPS to stop illegal trade and protect the remaining populations of parrots in the wild.

“However, sadly, many people are still unaware of how the exploitation of parrots is destroying our natural heritage,” he said.

The group noted that Nigeria had taken significant steps to combat the illegal trade of parrots and other protected species by introducing the Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill.

It called for the quick passage of the bill to support the ongoing law enforcement efforts.
“In addition, more public education is needed to reduce the demand for parrots as pets.
“Both Wild Africa and World Parrot Trust will continue to advocate stronger conservation policies and initiatives that safeguard Nigeria’s parrots using a combination of radio, TV, billboards, and newspaper publications.

“Wild Africa and the World Parrot Trust call on governments, businesses, and individuals to come together and take meaningful action to protect parrots before it’s too late,” the statement added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mr Chibudom Nwuche, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, says the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is becoming a world class city under President Bola Tinubu and Nyesom Wike.

Nwuche said this in Abuja on Saturday, when he accompanied the FCT minister on a routine inspection of ongoing projects in satellite towns in preparation for inauguration to celebrate President Bola Tinubu’s second anniversary.

Some of the projects included the completed Market and Palace Road in Gwagwalada, completed 15-kilometre A2 to Pai and the ongoing 15.4-km Pai to Gumani in Kwali Area Council.

The minister also inspected the ongoing dualisation of Ushafa to Military Checkpoint and War College Roads in Bwari Area Council.

“Abuja is becoming something else; a world-class city and the developments are such that it covers both the urban and rural areas.

“If we had been at this pace from 1999, Abuja would have long ago been much more than where it is today.

“I have seen many ministers come and go but this is the one that really has made a great impact on the nation’s capital,” Nwuche said.

The former lawmaker, who said Abuja was coming back to life, said that he had been to Gwagwalada, Kwali and Ushafa, stressing that the ongoing development was simply incredible in just two years.

“I am quite amazed. Like at Kwali, we saw a lot of places for farmlands with water.

“So, I think Abuja has come back to life,” he said.

Nwuche also said that the road projects were of world class quality, and commended Wike for putting his heart to the job.

He equally commended Tinubu for giving Wike the opportunity to serve, and for the support required for the wonderful feats achieved so far. (NAN)

The Katsina State Government on Saturday called for the cancellation of the English Language examination recently conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The call followed an incident which led to the commencement of the examination several hours behind the scheduled time nationwide on Wednesday.

The position of the state was announced in Katsina by Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education during a visit to WAEC office in Katsina.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the position was based on a petition signed by Hajiya Ummukhair Ahmed, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.

NAN recalls that WAEC blamed the situation on heightened efforts to curb examination malpractice, particularly the leakage of question papers.

“Students had to write the examination at night without light until torch lights, handsets lights, security lights were provided,” she said.

Musa-Musawa also called on schools, parents and the communities to exercise patience and wait for the outcome of the petition. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) Institute of Management and Technology in Abuja has empowered 199 barracks youths on Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

The youths were the first batch of ICT trainees under the institute’s Youth Empowerment Project for Barracks Youths 2025 to graduate on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the beneficiaries underwent six weeks intensive computer training at the institute.

In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, commended NAOWA for providing the youth with the skills needed in the current digital environment for self reliance.

Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Special Services and Programmes, Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdulsalam, said the training was a powerful testament to what visionary leadership, community commitment, and strategic collaboration could achieve.

He said the programme fully focused on key concerns of the national priorities which include youth empowerment, digital inclusion, and community development.

“Indeed, the initiative not only opens doors for new opportunities, but also lays solid foundation for youth contribution to national development.

“Since its inception, this project has empowered hundreds of young men and women from our barracks communities, first on purpose, then with skills, and finally with confidence to pursue greater works.

“Today’s graduates are joining the legacy, and I believe their stories of the three weeks’ growth and transformation will inspire many others in the months and years to come,” he said.

The COAS said that the ICT intervention was not just a vocational scheme, but a strategic investment in the nation’s future; in a world increasingly driven by technology where digital literacy was as essential as traditional literacy.

He commended the determination and discipline exhibited by the trainees throughout the period, saying they are living proofs that “when opportunity meets preparedness, great things happen”.

Oluyede urged the youth to apply the new skills to improve their lives, uplift others, and contribute to the development of the nation.

He said the Nigerian Army would be resolutely committed to supporting programmes that uplift soldiers’ families, and promote sustainable peace and development in the society.

Earlier, the President of NAOWA and Wife of the COAS, Mrs Mernan Oluyede, said the graduation was a celebration of achievement, progress, and the promise of a brighter future.

Oluyede said the ceremony was not merely the conclusion of training, but marked the beginning of new possibilities, fueled by vision, shaped by determination, and sustained by purposeful leadership.

According to her, at the core of NAOWA’s mission is empowerment through education, training, and skills acquisition borne from the urgent need to create sustainable livelihoods within barracks communities.

“This ICT programme equips our youth with the technical tools and confidence they need to succeed in a technology-driven world.

“This initiative embodies NAOWA’s values of service, compassion, and community development.

“We believe that true empowerment is not a hand-out but a hand-up-building capacity, instilling confidence, and promoting competence for lasting change,” she said.

The NAOWA president said the graduates embraced the challenge, committed themselves to learning, and emerged stronger and better equipped for the future.

She urged them to carry not only their certificates, but also a mindset of resilience, innovation, and excellence, as they stepped out.

Also, the President, Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Musa, represented by Mrs Jane Undiandeye, said that acquiring ICT skills was not just an advantage, but a necessity.

Musa said the youths had been equipped with tools to innovate, compete, and contribute meaningfully to societal development.

“Each of you has shown dedication, resilience, and a hunger for knowledge, ” she urged.

In her remarks, a former President of NAOWA, Mrs Hadiza Dambazau, commended NAOWA for its visionary leadership and dedication to uplifting the barracks communities through impactful programmes.

Dambazau congratulated the graduates for acquiring vital digital and entrepreneurial skills that aligned with the current global economy.

One of the graduates, Josephine John, thanked NAOWA president for providing them the opportunity to acquire means of earning livelihood through the empowerment training.

According to her, life becomes useful and meaningful with productive skills.

“For us, we are not only graduating from this prestigious institute, we have indeed acquired economic skills to decently survive.

“I want to express our collective appreciation to our mother, the NAOWA President for providing the needed resources that facilitated our successful training in NIMTA,” John said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Hajara Leman

The Gombe State Government has introduced the distribution of “Garin Inuwa”, a locally produced complementary food supplement aimed at nourishing thousands of undernourished children across the state.

The Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Dr Manassah Jatau, while flagging off the initiative on Saturday in Gombe, expressed optimism that it would go a long way in reducing the number of malnourished children in the state.

“The birth of Garin Inuwa is both a response and a resolve.

“It is a product developed from locally sourced ingredients and certified by NAFDAC, representing a significant milestone in our Human Capital Development agenda.

“This programme is not only a testament to the vision of His Excellency, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya, but also proof that sustainable, homegrown solutions can address our most pressing health challenges,” he said.

He highlighted the alarming statistics confronting the state: a stunting rate of 50.6 per cent, wasting rate of 8.8 per cent, and no fewer than 94,000 children classified as severely malnourished.

He explained that the initiative was a collaborative effort between the Ministries of Education; Science, Technology and Innovation, and Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRIN).

“Over 1,000 students from selected schools were trained in preparing nutritious food, while trained women were empowered to produce and distribute the supplements—laying the groundwork for entrepreneurial opportunities and broader community impact.

“No solid building stands on a weak foundation; good nutrition is that foundation and today, we’ve begun to rebuild it, one child at a time,” he said.

In her remarks, Prof. Aishatu Maigari, Commissioner for Education, stated that the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation was responsible for producing the complementary foods, while the Ministry of Education trained women and students on how to prepare them.

According to her, 200 women and 300 secondary school students have so far been trained in the production of the foods to prevent malnutrition, enabling them to collectively contribute to ending child malnutrition in the state,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, says preparations are in top gear for Nigeria to host the 2025 International Civil Service Conference Week.

Walson-Jack said this while delivering her speech during the May edition of the monthly Walking/Jogging and Aerobics organised by the Federation of the Public Service Games (FEPSGA) on Saturday in Abuja.

She said that the event would attract key stakeholders and experts in public administration from across the globe.

“The Week would feature various activities, including a special walking/jogging exercise on June 28 and an Awards Night for recognition and reward.

“We must all participate actively. As our Civil Service anthem says, we are marching to greatness,” she said.

Walson-Jack, who served as the Chief Guest Jogger and Captain, commended the event as a testament to the commitment of public servants to healthy living and workplace productivity.

She applauded FEPSGA President, Mr Amaebi Aluko, and his team for promoting physical wellness and unity across the service through regular fitness initiatives.

The Head of Service also expressed gratitude to the government and people of Rivers for successfully hosting the 2024 edition of the Games, describing their hospitality as instrumental to its success.

Walson-Jack said that her participation in the monthly exercise dated back to her time as a director and later as a permanent secretary.

“Physical wellness is not just a personal goal; it is a public service imperative. A healthy civil servant is a productive one. As leaders, we must not only preach wellness but lead by example,” she said.

She encouraged all civil servants, regardless of rank or fitness level, to make exercise a part of their lifestyle, describing it as a personal responsibility and a contribution to a vibrant and effective public service.

Aluko, on his part, commended the HCSF for her unwavering support for sports and wellness in the public sector.

The FEPSGA president described Walson-Jack’s presence as a strong endorsement of the role of sports in enhancing productivity and efficiency across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

“We give God the glory. The Federation of Public Service Games is a product of the vision and commitment of the current Head of Civil Service, even from her days as a Permanent Secretary,” he said.

Also, Mrs Patience Oyekunle, Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, Office of HCSF, called on public servants to prioritise their physical and mental well-being in order to enhance productivity and service delivery.

Oyekunle described the exercise as a bold step towards fostering a healthier, more energised and resilient workforce.

“It is with immense joy and a deep sense of duty that I welcome you all to this fitness initiative.

Today marks not just a beginning, but a commitment to well-being and excellence in public service,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Anglican Primate calls for collective action to tackle insecurity, economic challenges

Anglican Primate calls for collective action to tackle insecurity, economic challenges

186 total views today

By Angela Atabo

The Primate, Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, has called for collective action against insecurity and economic challenges in Nigeria.

Ndukuba made the call in his address at the Third Session of the Twelfth Synod of the Diocese of Abuja Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) at St. Phillips Church on Saturday in Abuja.

He congratulated President Bola Tinubu on his two years in office and commended his administration’s efforts in economic reforms and infrastructure.

He also commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his performance in Abuja.

He, however, said in spite of progress made, poverty, hunger, insecurity, poor healthcare, and endemic corruption persisted.

Speaking on the state of the nation, the primate said insecurity has unfortunately become a challenge nationwide requiring synergy to address.

“The insurgency in the Northeast and banditry in other parts of the country have continued to disrupt economic activities, particularly in the agricultural and mining sectors resulting in decreased productivity, loss of revenue, and increased poverty.

“We call on the respective stakeholders to address inflation, strengthen the Naira, improve fiscal performance, arrest insecurity and save Nigerians from its chocking economic quagmire.”

Ndukuba called for the need to equip armed forces and improve policing, expose sponsors of insecurity, reform the legal system for accountability and promote justice and peace.

This, he said, was because improved security would guarantee economic revival and national growth.

“The unity and peace of Nigeria is for the good of all citizens and peoples. The effective policing and protection of lives and property in our communities must be prioritised.

“Improvement in security will guarantee economic revival and growth.

“Therefore, religious and non-governmental organisations must collaborate with government to tackle these socio-economic problems. The greatest solution will be in gainful employment in agriculture and industry,” he said.

Speaking on the economy, Ndukuba said the latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that Nigeria’s inflation rate rose to 24.23 per cent in March 2025, from 23.18 per cent recorded in February 2025.

According to him, it is obvious that the persistent high inflationary trend is driven by various factors, including insecurity in food-producing areas, energy costs and currency fluctuations.

He said while the relative stability in the exchange rate is commendable, the monetary and fiscal authorities are urged to continue to apply the necessary interventions to strengthen the value of the Naira.

He explained that the current exchange rate of N1600 per dollar was unfavourable for growth and impoverishes Nigerians.

He urged the Federal Government to ensure that Nigeria’s trade policies are reviewed in line with the current global trade realities engaging with countries whose trade policies are favourable to Nigeria.

The primate said the global fall in oil price was of great concern given Nigeria’s mono product economy and heavy reliance on oil exports.

He said the current price of $60 per barrel would certainly distort the budgetary plan where the revenue projection was based on oil price of $75 per barrel and the effect will reduce government revenue affecting funding of development projects.”

Ndukuba said there is urgent need to fast track Nigeria’s efforts to diversify the economy, invest in non-oil sectors, and implement policies to promote economic growth and stability.

He called for resilience in the face of Nigeria’s ongoing struggles and urged Nigerians to put away their idols and serve God wholeheartedly adding that serving God is not optional.

“It is necessary to know that we are saved in order that we may serve God and bear witness to Christ by what we say, do and think, as we present ourselves as living sacrifices to God and express the same in our service to God and those around us.

“Faith and commitment to God must be intentional, Joshua 24:14-16 says fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
