The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) has announced the death of its President Chamberlain Dunkwu.
Chamberlain, who was also Deputy Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas passed on in the early hours of Saturday.
In a statement signed by the media department of the federation, Dunkwu was described as a passionate advocate for youth development through sports.
“Dunkwu, widely regarded as a passionate advocate for aquatic sports development, was known for his tireless commitment to nurturing young talents and repositioning swimming and other water sports in Nigeria.
“His leadership brought renewed energy to the federation, with initiatives aimed at grassroots development, athlete support, and stronger institutional partnerships.
“Beyond the pool, Dunkwu was respected in governance circles for his service at the National Assembly.
“He worked closely within the leadership structure of the House of Representatives, contributing to administrative coordination and legislative operations.
“His passing leaves a significant void within the Federation and the broader Nigerian sporting community, where he was seen as a driving force behind efforts to elevate aquatic sports to new heights”.
Earlier, the second Swim for Future Swimming Championship was scheduled to hold Saturday (today) at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) earlier reported that the competition was canceled “due to the critical health condition of Dunkwu”, who was also the sole sponsor of the event.
The Vice president of the federation, Abdul-Hassan Magaji announced the cancellation in a brief meeting with parents whose kids were expected to take part in the competition.
Magaji pleaded with parents to “understand with the federation” as he assured a later competition date will be communicated to parents.
Meanwhile, a total of 120 swimmers registered for the competition. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
