2027: I’ll reclaim Kano for APC- Doguwa

By EricJames Ochigbo

Rep. Ado Doguwa (APC-Kano state) has pledged to reclaim Kano state for the All Progressive Congress (APC) and deliver in 2028.

This will be possible if he is appointed Director-General of the 2027 APC Campaign Project in the state.

In a statement on Sunday, Doguwa promised  the leadership of the party to deliver the presidential and governorship seats.

“As a 7th term lawmaker, I am seizing the opportunity to urge the leadership of the APC to graciously allow me to coordinate and serve as a Director-General of Kano state APC Campaign  Project in 2027.

“I vow to deliver victorious results in the gubernatorial and presidential elections before noon on the day of election,” he said.

Doguwa, who is the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Upstream), also pledged selfless service to his constituents, APC and the NASS.

He said he had remained a strategic member of the APC, of the parliament and a humble servant of his constituents.

According to him, he stands tall in the Kano state political space as the only member elected under the platform of the APC in the whole of Kano South Senatorial District.

Doguwa said that he is the only major threat to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) government in Kano state and to the National Leader of the party, Sen. Rabiu kwankwaso.

He said that the NNPP government in Kano state had performed below expectation as it had done little to develop the economic and social wellbeing of the people of Kano state.

Doguwa refuted his colleague, Rep. Abdulmumin Jibrin (NNPC-Kano state), allegation that described him as “an obstacle to peace in Kano state and a liability to the APC”.

Doguwa, who is also the Chairman, Northern Regional Caucus of the 10th House of Representatives, said he will always prefer peace in the state over his political ambition.

“My peaceful nature and attitude can best be confirmed by my religious and mutual relationship with my constituents, and the traditional rulers.

“Above all my timely support to the different security agencies like the military, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the local vigilante groups.

“I support in many ways, such as distribution of operational vehicles, motorcycles, and other supportive materials and resources.

“My simple response to the claim that I am a liability to the APC, is that I am an asset, a source of pride, and a goldmine to the APC both in the state and in the country.

“In my parliamentary or legislative track records, I have never been found to be a traitor, mischievous or disloyal to any of my principals.

“I have always served and discharged my legislative duties with due diligence and with all sense of humility, honesty, dedication and utmost respect to my colleagues and my principals,” he said.

Doguwa added that he has never been suspended or found wanting for over 33 years as a member of the House of Representatives.

He dared Jibrin to present his track records to put the matter to rest once and for all following ongoing disagreements between both Kano state lawmakers.

Doguwa is also the Chairman Special Committee on Crude Oil Theft and Pipelines Vandalisation in Nigeria.

He served as the Majority Leader of the 9th House of Reps and the Chief Whip of the 8th House.

Other positions held in the past assemblies include, Chairman of Special Committee on Petroleum Industry Bill, former Chairman Special Committee on New Naira Re-design, and Chairman Committee on Millennium Development Goals. (NAN)

2023 Abia APC candidates seek party unity

By Femi Ogunshola

The 24 members of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the 2023 Abia State House of Assembly election have demanded an end to the factions in the party.

Mr Anderson Akaliro, the leader of the group, led the candidates on a reconciliation mission to Abuja, according to a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting.

The reconciliation meeting tagged `Abia APC Crisis Peace Initiative’, was anchored by Mr Anderson Akaliro, the only APC lawmaker in Abia State House of Assembly.

Akaliro who signed the communiqué, urged the national leadership of APC to, as a matter of urgency, convoke a meeting of all leaders and stakeholders of the party to resolve the impasse.

The meeting, he said, should include the zonal leadership and the 2023 House of Assembly, Abia APC lawmakers in the National Assembly, to get their commitment to a peace accord.

“All factions within the rank and file of the party should be resolved and all factions should fall back into the party as one indivisible unit.

“We are aware of the forthcoming Congress, and we employ the party leadership to commit to ensuring that all interest groups are duly represented in the state, LGA, and ward party positions’’, he said.

This, according to him, will be a prelude to free and fair party primaries in 2026.

He, therefore, called on all gladiators in the crisis to sheath their sword and embrace peace and unity in APC in Abia State.

“We want peace in the Abia APC because there are multiple factions, which is the reason why we lost the election.

“24 of us contested for the State Assembly election and 23 lost; the faction challenge contributed to our loss. We only have one person as an APC member who won the election” he said in the communiqué.

He said issues responsible for the factions, including imposition of candidates, greed, and pride anchored on personality clashes of interests were not good for the progress of the party.

He appealed to President Bola Tinubu as the leader of the party and the National Chairman to call all stakeholders, including Assembly candidates, and Abia APC lawmakers in the two chambers of National Assembly for truce.

“The facade of unity is but a veil over the fissures that have led to our collective losses in political contests, and it is time for introspection and action.”

“The potential within our ranks is immense, with leaders of influence and respect.

“It is our firm belief that through reconciliation and unity, the APC in Abia State will emerge stronger and victorious in future electoral endeavors’’, Akaliro said.

He said the influx of new members into the party was a clarion call for reconciliation and to establish a harmonious environment that would foster alignment and promote the spirit of togetherness. (NAN)www.nannews.ng

President Bola Tinubu

One year after: The Legacy Man and his strides

One year after: the Legacy Man and his strides

By Bayo Onanuga
One year after being in the saddle, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be the first person to admit that the ride has been bumpy.

He is also the first to say he is unfazed by the turbulence as he remains focused on the marathon of the next three years. The past year has been months of baby steps, months of laying the foundations for the next three years of canter.

As Nigeria’s 16th President, Tinubu, during his campaign for the office, said he would make difficult decisions and that running the country would not be business as usual.

From day one, he sought to fulfill his promises, beginning from his earthshaking ‘subsidy is gone’ announcement at the Eagle Square, on the day he was sworn in.

The announcement reverberated around the country and beyond. He was not just actualising a promise he made. He was also affecting the consensus of all the major candidates in the 2023 election that the several decades old, wasteful subsidy must end.

His administration followed this up with the decision to harmonise the foreign exchange rates. The multiple exchange rates executed under his predecessor had given room to various abuses, among which was arbitrage, where people close to the power loop made humongous money, getting forex at the official rate and offloading it at the so-called parallel market for almost 100 percent profit.

Both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank advised the Nigerian government to end the policy, to no avail, as forex obligations piled up, FDI’s dried up, and investors shunned Nigeria. Tinubu knew that to reset the economy and build renewed confidence locally and internationally, there must be a policy change.

He took the measure, just as he promised during the campaign, with the government announcing that it wanted to harmonise the rates in ‘weeks’. The financial world took notice that Nigeria is at the cusp of great change.

Although it has taken months to achieve the harmony, with the Naira in the interregnum, taking a massive bashing from the dollar. The heavily hurt currency at a stage fell to about N1,900 to the dollar, with the naysayers and the opposition predicting a total destruction of the currency.

Their wish did not come to pass, as the currency rebounded to earn global acclaim as the world’s best performing currency. After weeks of amassing muscle against the US dollar, the Nigerian currency weakened again.

Now, the monetary authorities are working hard to ensure the currency did not fall into the abyss like it did in February, before the rebound.

Together with the abrogation of the subsidy regime, the forex harmonisation policy triggered an inflationary rage, with food inflation hitting unprecedented levels. Cost of living rose countrywide.

Some analysts, however, blamed the inflation on other factors such as insecurity that prevented farmers from going to farm and the poor state of roads, that escalated transportation costs, pushing up the costs of virtually everything.

The administration responded on many fronts with a raft of ameliorative policies. Last December, it offered subsidised bus transport and free train service to Nigerians going home for Christmas and New Year.

The subsidy was also offered for the return journeys. Over 200,000 Nigerians benefited from the bus service.

In agriculture, the government declared a food emergency, launched a massive dry season farming in important crops such as wheat and maize, along with assisting farmers with N100 billion worth of fertilisers.

The government released 43,000 metric tonnes of grains in the reserves and bought another 60,000 metric tonnes of rice from local millers for distribution to the people. States, rich individuals, National Assembly members joined in distributing food and cash to the vulnerable millions in the country. For months, food inflation resisted all the measures, hitting 33 percent in April.

Government also rejected the panicky measure of importing food, reposing confidence in the Nigerian farmers, that from their yields, Nigeria will overcome its food crisis. In recent weeks, the news from the markets has been that some food prices are going down.

As part of the ameliorative measures, the Tinubu administration announced wage awards of N35,000 to Federal workers to enable them cope with food inflation and transport costs, as it works out a new national minimum wage.

It announced in July last year the Presidential CNG Initiative. Under the programme, that will herald a new industry and new jobs, hundreds of buses and tricycles, which will be powered by Compressed Natural Gas(CNG), will be locally assembled for countrywide rollout. Some of the vehicles will be electric for use in some Nigerian states, where CNG is not readily available.

A panel to drive the vision was inaugurated in October 2023. However, bureaucratic delays slowed its procurement work. A large number of the buses and tricycles will be available as part of the ceremonies to mark the first anniversary of the Tinubu administration.

Businesses were not left out of government’s mitigation measures. The Bank of Industry, in conjunction with Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, is implementing Presidential Conditional Grant Programme for nano businesses.

Disbursement of N50,000 each to the applicants that registered began in April. Beneficiaries included retail marketers, corner shop owners, petty traders, market men and women, food and vegetable vendors, vulcanisers and and shoemakers. Over 1,000,000 nano businesses are targeted.

To help big businesses, Government announced an aid package of N1billion each to 75 of them.

The Tinubu government also approved $617 million for up-skilling Nigerian youths, providing startup funding, catalytic infrastructure, and policy advocacy. Youths with digital skills are now registering to benefit from the fund, being administered by the Bank of Industry.

In a country with 200 million people and tax to GDP ratio of less than 10 per cent, President Tinubu knew from day one, that it will be difficult to make any great, historic impact, if he fails to tinker with the tax structure and bring more money into the national purse.

He, therefore, announced his plan by setting up the Oyedele Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform, which is winding up its work and has recommended far-reaching reforms in the tax regime.

President Tinubu also changed the leadership of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to plug revenue holes and introduce creative ways to increase revenue without necessarily overburdening the people. The result has been astonishing.

Government now takes 50 per cent of the revenue of the MDAs, with record N840 billion recorded in the first quarter.

The NNPC was ordered to remit its dollar earnings into CBN. Revenue inflow generally is increasing. FIRS is working towards increasing the percentage of tax to GDP to about 20 per cent.

The inflow of money is making the Tinubu administration dream big and plan big.

With Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund due for launch, the government is already embarking on legacy projects, such as the 700 kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway, which began in March.

Government also plans to reactivate the Sokoto Illela-Badagry Superhighway, which was abandoned in 1976. Many roads and bridges in state of disrepair are to be refurbished. There are plans for rail.

Funding for the Ibadan-Abuja-Kaduna rail is being arranged. Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail will be resuscitated while the Kano-Katsina-Maradi rail line, started by the Buhari administration will be completed with $2billion dollar loan already secured.

Government has not been short about rolling out several policy initiatives, from the issuance of travelling passports, which has been made quicker, to the planned implementation of some aspects of the Oronsaye report, to cut the costs of governance.

Notably, President Tinubu issued an executive order to enhance investment in the oil and gas sector. The quick fruits of the policy was the opening of three big gas plants in the Niger Delta by the President in recent weeks. Mega investments running into over $15 billion are expected in weeks.

The Tinubu administration has also fulfilled some of the campaign promises with the students loans and Credit Corp ready for take off.

To President Tinubu, no Nigerian child should be denied education because the parents could not afford it. He also hopes that the Credit Corp will enhance the purchasing power of workers and boost national commerce.

President Tinubu at various occasions has acknowledged the pains that some of his reforms are causing the generality of our people. But he says they are pains we must bear to make progress as a nation.

An ever caring leader, he is always evolving measures to help reduce the pains. Best of all, he listens to the voice of the people and make necessary adjustments.

In one of the most profound analysis of our situation and an endorsement of the reforms being executed by the Tinubu administration, Planning and Budget Minister, Atiku Bagudu said in a recent interview: “We want to be like Asian countries, we want to grow like Brazil but Brazil and those Asian countries that we want, (that) we are competing with, have taken measures that we needed to have taken decades ago.

“The president is even bold to acknowledge that. Let’s do it now. Some of these measures have consequences which we acknowledge. And that’s why again, a number of measures are introduced in order to ameliorate the situation.

“These measures are helpful to Nigeria, irrespective of North or South because they are to restore macroeconomic stability, to restore security in the country and make it better so that investors will feel confident.”

Olumide Braithwaite, the only son of  late elder statesman and legal luminary, Tunji Braithwaite, has survived a ghastly auto accident in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident, which occurred on Thursday near the CBN headquarters, involved a buillion van and a Hilux pickup truck.

Kogi East APC stakeholders pass vote of confidence in Ododo

By Philip Yatai

The Kogi East All Progressive Congress (APC) stakeholders have passed a Vote of Confidence in Gov. Ahmed Ododo of Kogi, appealing for an audience with him towards strengthening the party.

The stakeholders stated this at a media chat with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, saying that the interface was to provide feedback and seek for direction on ways forward.

This, according to them, is critical towards strengthening the party to continue its hold as the ruling party in the state.

Mr Isah Daniel, the pioneer state Vice-chairman of the party, however, expressed concern over the depletion of party members, particularly in Kogi East due to the activities of the opposition.

He stressed the need for a massive grassroots membership drive to swell the membership fold of the party.

“As critical stakeholders, it is necessary to come together to adopt what I described as an ‘operational political victory module’ so that we can come out victorious in subsequent and future elections.

“In achieving what is before us and to consolidate our party on ground, we need an interface with Gov. Ododo for possible directive and feedback.

“We will be doing this by consulting stakeholders at all levels for their contribution for the party to remain a winning party in the state,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr Bala Zakari, a stakeholder blamed the depletion of the membership of the party on the crises that came with the victory of the party at the Nov. 16, 2023 governorship election in the state.

“There are a lot of defections from the party after the election.

“So, we are coming together to help our party; to help our government and remobilise, sensitise and talk to our people.

“This is so that those who defected from the party will come back, and for those who were not our members before, to join us. This is because APC is a progressive democratic party,” he said.

Also, Sen. Emmanuel Ocheja, said that in spite of the membership challenge facing the party, Ododo has had performed beyond expectations.

Ocheja, who represented Kogi East at the Senate between 2011 and 2015, commended the governor for reaching out to stakeholders across different parties to come together to develop the state.

“Ododo has begun his stewardship on a very good footing.

“He has started visiting top political stakeholders across the different parties in the state, like the former governor Ibrahim Idris and former governor Idris Wada among others.

“He is bringing people together and reconciling even the warring factions in Kogi and we welcome and encourage him to keep on with what he has started.

“If he continues with what he is doing now, there will not be any other party in Kogi but APC,” he said.

Another stakeholder, retired Major-General Patrick Akpa, lauded the governor for addressing insecurity, in spite of sharing boundaries with 10 states.

Akpa described security as simply ‘safety and freedom from danger’, and commended the governor for establishing Forward Operational Based to make residents feel safe.

He also lauded the governor for supporting the state vigilance group with operational vehicles and motorcycles.

He appealed to the governor to extend the same gesture to the Kogo East Neighbourhood Watch, established at district level as a self-help approach to tackle insecurity.

On his part, a former Minister of State for Labour, Prof. Stephen Ocheni, said that Ododo was doing very well in addressing workers and pensioners welfare and urged him to continue.

Another stakeholder, Mr Moses Abdullahi, assured of the continued support of the party’s stakeholders in Kogi East for the success of the party. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ex-gov. of Katsina Ibrahim Shema joins APC

By Zubairu Idris

Former governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shema was the state governor between 2007 and 2015, under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former governor was registered at Shema Ward party office, Dutsin-ma Local Government Area and was issued an APC membership card by the state’s party Chairman, Alhaji Sani Aliyu-Daura.

His membership card’s serial number is 26551.

Aliyu-Daura commended Gov. Dikko Radda and his immediate predecessor, Aminu Masari, for their roles in securing the defection of the influential figure.

He therefore, assured the former governor of equal treatment, just like any other party member.

The Chief of Staff to Gov. Dikko Radda, Alhaji Jabiru Abdullahi-Tasuri, presented the membership card to Shema on behalf of the governor on Thursday in Dutsin-ma.

He quoted Gov. Radda as saying that the party had recorded a momentous achievement by welcoming such a prominent figure from the opposition.

“This marks a historic shift in the political landscape of the state, the defection is a homecoming and a reunion with political family members,” Gov. Radda said.

The governor recalled that both Shema and Masari, once served under the leadership of the late former President Umaru Musa Yar’adua.

He explained that though the duo later separated by certain circumstances and individual goals, they were now back on the same side.

The governor called on other patriotic citizens of the state to join hands in repositioning the state for greatness.

He reiterated that his doors were open to anyone willing to contribute to the state’s development.

In his remarks, Shema said that he joined the APC to contribute to the development of the state and the country in general. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Abdullahi Ganduje

Kano High Court affirms Ganduje’s suspension

By Aminu Garko

A Kano State High Court has restrained the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, from parading himself as a member of the party.

Justice Usman Malam Na’abba, made the order on Wednesday following an exparte motion filed by Dr Ibrahim Sa’ad on behalf of two APC executive members of Ganduje ward, Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area.

The plaintiffs are the party’s Assistant Secretary, Laminu Sani and its Legal Adviser, Haladu Gwanjo.

The duo are among the nine ward executive members who suspended Ganduje from the party at the ward level, two days ago.

The respondents in the case included APC as a party, APC National Working Committee (NWC), APC Kano State Working Committee (KSWC) and Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Granting the motion, Na’abba made an order restraining Ganduje from parading himself as APC National Chairman.

The court further made an order directing Ganduje to henceforth, desist from presiding over all affairs of the APC National Working Committee (NWC).

The court directed the respondents to henceforth maintain status quo ante belum as from April 15, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit on April, 30.

Justice Na’abba also granted the plaintiff’s prayer which ordered the APC SWC from interfering with the legally and validly considered decision of executives of Ganduje ward, essentially on action endorsed by two third majority of the executives as provided by the party constitution.

“An order is hereby granted directing all parties in the suit APC (1st), APC National Working Committee (2nd), Kano State Working Committee APC (3rd), Dr Abdullah Ganduje (4th), to maintain status quo ante belum as of April 15, 2024.

“The order thereby restraining the 1st respondent (APC) from recognising the 4th respondent (Ganduje) as member of APC and prohibiting the 4th respondent (Ganduje) from presiding over any affairs of the NWC and restraining the state Working Committee from interfering with the legal and valid decision of the ward executives of Ganduje ward.

“That the 4th respondent (Ganduje) is prohibited from parading himself as member of APC or doing any act that may portray him or seem to be a member of APC, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit”.

It will be recalled that nine members of the Ganduje ward, proclaimed the suspension of the national chairman of APC over the allegation of corruption slammed on him by the Kano state government.

The nine APC executives said they were prompted to act following a petition written by one Ja’afaru Adamu, a member of APC from Ganduje’s polling unit.

In the petition, Adamu made allegations of corruption charges against the former governor just as he urged the ward leaders to investigate the matter to redeem the dented image of the party against the backdrop of President Bola Tinubu’s fight against corruption.

Following the failure of the Ward Chairman and Secretary to act on the petition, nine members of the executive led by the legal adviser, acted and took the decision that led to the suspension Ganduje. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
