Association seeks end to sexual abuse in barracks community

By Sumaila Ogbaje

The President, Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Musa, has advocated effective collaboration to address the menace of sexual exploitation and abuse, especially in military barracks.

She stated this at a seminar with the theme: “Preventing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse,” to mark her one year in office as the 15th President of DEPOWA, on Saturday in Abuja.

Musa said the menace was prevalent in the society, adding that many occurrences were unreported without exemption of barracks community and its environs.

According to her, the event is an opportunity to discuss the issue and echoed the voice of Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General in stating that, “sexual exploitation and abuse have no place in our society.

“We recognise the severity of the consequences and we aim to work towards reducing its prevalence within our communities and immediate environs.

“We also thought it necessary to sensitise the youth on the menace of drug abuse and how to avoid it so they can have a promising future.

“In all of these, it is important to know who you are, know what you want to achieve in life and develop some personal values that will guide you into achieving your goals”.

The DEPOWA president said that resource persons have been brought in, to guide barracks teenagers and youth to be able to adopt the lessons from the sessions, into their daily living and eventually attain the future they desired.

She pledged support to the victims who report any form of sexual exploitation, or attempt to be initiated into the use of illicit substances within the barracks’ domain.

She urged the authorities to investigate reported cases to address the menace, adding that,  “indeed, perpetrators ought to be held accountable”.

According  to her, the event is being organised to celebrate the association’s significant milestone, reflect on its achievements, acknowledge their challenges and look forward to the future.

She said the association had in the past one year, done as much as it could in making positive impacts in the lives of youths and women, especially the vulnerable within their sphere of influence.

“As we all know, DEPOWA is the melting pot that unifies wives of serving officers’ in the Armed Forces and the Police.

“I am glad to note that we have witnessed remarkable achievements from the various spousal associations that make up DEPOWA and by God’s grace we will continue to impact lives within and outside the barracks communities in diverse ways.

“The activities of DEPOWA within the past one year have focused on adding value in the lives of women and youth, especially in the areas of healthcare, fitness, education, agriculture and skills training.

“All of these align with my vision of “Seeing Women and Girls Become Productive and Contributors to Family and Society Driven by Deep Sense of Values and Hard-Working Spirit”.

“We will not relent in our efforts to keep touching lives in ways that are necessary,” she added.

One of the resource persons, Dr Chika Anozie, said that alcohol, illicit drugs and substance abuse have their negative impact on young people.

Anozie, who delivered a paper titled, “the Risk of Teenage Drug Abuse: Prevention and Awareness,” enjoined the youths to take charge of their environment, circle of friends, and peer pressure.

According to her, there have been 20 per cent increase in drug use in the past 10 years, and that Africa will experience the largest growth in absolute numbers of drug users while four of 10 drug users in Africa will be youths by 2030.

On her part, Dr Olajumoke Jenyo, who presented a paper titled: “Sexual Exploitation and Abuse: Prevention and Response,” said that two of every 10 male child have been sexually abused.

She said that more of sensitisation was required to address the menace of sexual abuse in the society, saying that more girls have been victims of such abuse unreported. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Alaba Olusola Oke

The Ondo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, on Saturday allegedly assaulted Mr Tayo Ikujuni, an Assistant Editor-in-Chief, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The assault took place during the conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in the state.

It happened at Ward 9, Eji-Oba High School, Oba-Ile in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

Yusuf-Ogunleye, who confirmed to have harassed Ikujuni and collected his cell phone and threw it away, said “the journalist failed to produce his identity card when asked.

Recalling the ordeal, Ikujuni said that the commissioner ordered some of his political thugs to seize his Samsung tablet.

“Trouble started at about 11:45 a.m., when I inquired if the electoral materials has arrived, since they have started counting.

“Immediately, Yusuf-Ogunleye shouted, “who are you. You’re a useless journalist. You’re a stupid journalist. Go away from here.

“He had to collect my Tecno phone and damaged my Samsung tablet and my wrist watch.

“It was the quick intervention of some party chieftains and security personnel that rescued me from the midst of the commissioner’s violent looking thugs,” Ikujuni said.

Reacting, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, decried the attack and physical assault on Ikujuni by the commissioner.

Its chairman, Mr Leke Adegbite, said the act was barbaric and unacceptable.

In a statement, Adegbite said the action of the commissioner was uncivilised and called on Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa to immediately suspend Yusuf-Ogunleye and launch investigation into the incident.

“Ondo NUJ observes with sadness that Mr Yusuf-Ogunleye’s attitude to media professionals was unbecoming of a public office holder.

“We call on Mr Governor to place Mr Saka Ogunleye on indefinite suspension for his physical assault on a senior journalist like Tayo Ikujuni, who was performing his constitutional roles of monitoring the APC primary.

“We call on the commissioner to replace damaged handset of the journalist and tender unreserved apology to the victim and the media industry.

“We equally direct media houses and professionals to halt the coverage and activities of the commissioner until our demands are met.” (NAN)(www.nannnews.ng)

Investigate alleged assault on Ondo Women Affairs commissioner- NGO

By Justina Auta

An NGO, Sustainable Gender Action Initiative (SGAI), has called for an investigation into alleged public assault against Dr Olubunmi Osadahun, the Ondo State Commissioner for Women Affairs.

Mrs Mufuliat Fijabi, Executive Director (SGAI), on Monday in Abuja said the attack, which had gone viral on social media has negative impacts on Osadahun and absolute lack of respect for the office she holds.

There was a recent viral video showing one Mr Olumide Awolumate, the Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Arigidi, Akoko North West Local Government Area, in a physical attack with the commissioner.

” This act of violence perpetrated by award Chairman, Olumide Awolumate,of the All Progressives Congress in Arigidi, in Akoko North West, over palliatives, further reiterates the negative impact of patriarchy.

” It also shows absolute lack of respect for her person and the office she holds.

” This totally unacceptable act is no doubt a reflection of Gender Based Violence (GBV) that is prevalent across the country, which calls for an absolute condemnation by all.

” Women and girls deserve respect and dignity. This in spite of all the international and regional commitments that Nigeria has made as well as the adoption of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition, (VAPP) Act in 2015,” she said.

According to her, in spite of the fact that the Ondo State Government has also domesticated the VAPP Act in 2021, violence against women and girls still persists, calling for urgent investigation and prosecution to end the development.

“While the video clip displaying violent attack on the honorable commissioner has gone viral,  SGAI wishes to state categorically that expedite action on investigation and prosecution will contribute significantly to setting a good precedence.

” This will deter others who are currently engaged in acts of violence against persons publicly and privately,” she added.

She therefore reiterated the commitment of the organisation to promoting inclusive governance and advocacy against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). (NAN)

I did not assault my wife – Ondo D’gov

By Segun Giwa

The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa has denied allegations of physically abusing his wife, describing it as taking politics too far.

A statement issued on Sunday in Akure by his media aide, Mr Kenneth Odusola-Stevenson, quotes Aiyedatiwa as stating that the allegations were baseless and the imagination of a faceless group.

It would be recalled that there was news making the rounds on social media that the deputy governor allegedly assaulted his wife.

The statement, which noted that the deputy governor reserved the right to privacy particularly with respect to his family, said there had never been any issue of domestic violence as alleged, as his wife, Mrs Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, was at the moment outside the shores of the country.

“It has come to the attention of the Office of the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, that a baseless and false report credited to a faceless group alleging the deputy governor of domestic abuse and assault on his wife.

“This falsehood and its peddlers would have ordinarily been ignored at this time but the need to halt further negative reports and rumours capable of creating needless tension in our state has necessitated this response.

“The said allegation of domestic abuse against the person of the deputy governor is a figment of the imagination of those behind it and their ungodly intentions to cause crisis in the state had been known for weeks and therefore such falsehood did not come as a surprise.

“It is not a secret that Mrs Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa has lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years before her husband became an elected public official in Nigeria.

“And since then she has been shuttling between the United Kingdom and Nigeria to take care of the home and the children who are also in the United Kingdom.

“Therefore, any report of alleged domestic issues within the family should be taken as the handiwork of the enemies of the state who are bent on causing crisis where there is none.

“And we therefore warn those spreading such falsehood to desist or face the consequences,” the statement said.

According to the deputy governor, he has been busy with official duties of his office and performing duties delegated to him by his boss, Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu, while on leave.

“It is, therefore uncharitable for anyone to claim that the deputy governor has in that period carried out “multiple assaults” on his spouse who is out of the country.

“This is nothing but political blackmail taken too far.

“We urge the good people of Ondo State to ignore such falsehood as those behind it may just be plotting further attacks on the deputy governor to promote their sinister agenda,” the statement concluded. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
