Boundary commission begins demarcation of resolved interstate boundaries

The National Boundary Commission (NBC) says it has commenced the demarcation of interstate boundaries that have been resolved and defined in the last two years.

The Director-General of the commission, Mr Adamu Adaji, stated this on Sunday in Abuja, while assessing the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s administration after two years in office.

Adaji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the progress was made possible following the support of the Tinubu-led administration in the last two years.

“We have commenced the demarcation of some boundaries.

“This is because, if the boundaries are not properly demarcated for it to be recognised easily on the ground, you can’t say you have resolved the boundary dispute.

“So, we have commenced the process of demarcating some of the boundaries that have been resolved.

“We have demarcated Katsina-Jigawa boundary; we have commenced the demarcation of Ebuen boundary between Edo and Enugu States and made some demarcation exercises on a few other boundaries.

“We have also demarcated the boundaries of FCT and its neighbours substantially,” he said.

Adaji added that the commission had also improved in the resolution of some aspects of some internal boundaries that require intervention.

He assured that the commission would continue with the demarcation exercises.

Adaji said, before now, more emphasis was on the resolution of contested boundaries with little efforts on demarcation.

He added that the non demarcation of some resolved boundaries have led to some instances of encroachment.

“For the problems to be curtailed, they need to be demarcated, and we have strategised in such a way that we demarcate these boundaries as we make progress.

“We don’t wait until the entire boundary is defined before we demarcate. Once any sector is resolved, we try to commence the demarcation,” he said.

He identified lack of political will on the part of some of the neighbouring local government, states and neighbouring countries as one of the serious challenges affecting boundary demarcation efforts.

The NBC boss, however, said that the commission had been empowered by President Tinubu administration to make a better impact in resolving and demarcating some of the disputed boundaries. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The National Boundary Commission (NBC) says it is delineating Nigeria’s maritime boundaries with its neighbours to maximise the country’s growing blue economy.

The NBC Director-General, Mr Adamu Adaji, stated this on Sunday in Abuja, while assessing the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s administration after two years in office.

Adaji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the commission had made progress in delineating Nigeria’s maritime boundaries with Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Benin Republic and Ghana.

“For Ghana, there has been some stalemate in terms of our efforts to define the boundary, but we’ve gotten them back on track and we are making progress.

“We have plans to meet to continue the progress this year to make sure that we define the boundaries.

“For the maritime boundary between us and Equatorial Guinea, we’re also managing it properly.

“We also have plans, this year, to continue with the discussions towards defining the remaining aspect – the remaining length of the boundary that is still outstanding, about three nautical miles,” he said.

Adaji said that the effort was to make sure that Nigeria’s maritime territories were well defined, secured and protected.

He added that in line with promotion of the blue economy, the resources in the affected maritime boundaries would be defined for proper management.

Speaking on Nigeria’s extended continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles by the UN, the D-G said that the government would soon roll out plans to harness its resources.

He also disclosed the possibility of Nigeria getting additional extension of the continental shelf.

“After getting more, the government will now commence processes of trying to see how they can maximize all the benefits.

“This is because that area is an area where we have resources that can benefit the country. For example, we have minerals like hydrocarbons and metallic modules that can be of benefit to the country.

“There are other resources, which by the time we start exploration, they will be of great benefit to the country,” he said.

Speaking on securing the maritime boundaries, Adaji said that a committee had been set up under the Ministry of Defence along with Nigeria’s neighbours to provide adequate security for the maritime sector.

Stressing the need for the combined efforts, the D-G said “we are working closely with our neighbours to make sure that we jointly patrol the area and ensure maximum security for the maritime sector. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Gov. Mohammed Umar-Bago of Niger has inaugurated a short-term 20-year development plan for the ‘New Bida Town’.

According to Umar-Bago, the plan is aimed at strategically modernising the city in line with his administration’s vision of ‘Urban Renewal Development’ in the state.

The Governor stated this at a Town Hall meeting and a stakeholders’ engagement on ‘New Bida 20-year Development Plan’ organised by the Ministry of Lands and Survey, in collaboration with the New Niger Development Project, held in Bida on Sunday.

He said that the plan was a short time strategy that would engender rapid development and boost socio-economic activities in the town.

Speaking on the 44km Ring Road dual carriageway, which was aimed at diverting traffic, the governor said a new city would also spring up in the area.

Umar-Bago stated that social amenities as well as a 100 megawatt solar farm would be provided for the people in the area.

He added, “With the thousands of articulated vehicles that pass through Bida, with all the negative consequences, the construction of the ring road, with a setback of 1km on each side, is a necessity for the health, safety, and prosperity of the town.”

Umar-Bago also stated that the development was going to be in phases of 20-year short term and 50-year long term plans.

He added that over 3 million trailers passing through can generate N3 billion revenue monthly, had been left untapped.

The governor promised that he would ensure the speedy development of the state in spite of inadequate financial resources.

Umar-Bago said: “Niger Government has no intention to seize or grab land. We want to establish layouts.

“Wherever you have a house or a farm that falls on the right-of-way, you will be adequately compensated.

“The state government has a development plan, and the concerned MDAs will continue to talk to the concerned people while I am admonishing them not to take laws into their hands.”

He enjoined the people to show understanding and support for the project, stressing that the state government was not collecting anybody’s land.

Umar-Bago vowed, “But the owners of any property that will be affected by the project will be duly compensated.”

The governor, however, cautioned community members to be wary of land grabbers.

In his remarks, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, called on the people to cooperate with the state government in its effort to develop Bida town and its environs.

Hr said, “This will secure a good future for many generations. The construction of the road will save lives and create avenues for greater economic development.”

The Etsu Nupe said that the gesture could not come at a better time than now when Nigerians were facing various challenges, including economic hardship and bad road networks.

He said that Umar-Bago’s gesture would go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the people.

Abubakar lauded Umaru-Bago’s developmental strides in the Emirate and the state in general.

He urged the people to embark on fervent prayers for God to give him the wisdom, sound health and ability to bring meaningful development to the state.

The Etsu Nupe enjoined the citizens to be law-abiding, respect constituted authorities and live in peace with one another, irrespective of their ethnic and religious affiliations.

The Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mrs Maurice Magaji, explained that the event was a defining moment and a shared commitment to transform Bida into an economically vibrant city.

She added that the plan provided a framework for sustainable growth and environmental resilience, among others.

Retired Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Garba, an APC stalwart in the state, and Prof. Muhammad Kutea-Yahaya, Pro-Chancellor, Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, among other stakeholders, also spoke at the event.

They were full of commendation to the governor for his developmental strides and called for support from the people to enable him fully achieve his vision. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Achieving peace not just about wielding guns – Jonathan

Achieving peace not just about wielding guns – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says achieving peace in society goes beyond carrying rifles and guns, insisting that justice and equity must prevail.

Jonathan made this known in Abuja, where he was the guest of honour at the President’s Night organised by the Rotary Club of Asokoro.

Represented by former Chief of Defence Staff, Retired Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, the former president emphasised that peace was not merely the absence of war, but the presence of fairness.

“You see, he (Jonathan) has this sense of justice, that we must be just. We should not exclude anybody.

“He understood that achieving peace is not just about carrying rifles and guns. In fact, he believed that this accounts for just about 30 per cent of what is needed.

“The remaining 70 per cent involves hard work, people talking, negotiating, agreeing, disagreeing, coming back again to discuss and then finally agreeing,” he said.

According to him, this approach was instrumental in restoring peace to Plateau State during Jonathan’s administration.

He also commended the Rotary Club for its impactful service to humanity.

In his remarks, the 24th President of the Rotary Club of Asokoro, Mr Babatunde Adetoba, said the event was to showcase the club’s contributions to the community.

“Rotary Club is an international organisation that has been established for over 100 years. We focus on seven key areas, including education, water, sanitation, and maternal health,” he said.

Adetoba revealed that the club recently assisted indigent patients with free cataract surgeries and donated five million Naira to a hospital.

“We reached out to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, donated drugs and medications, conducted free eye screenings, and gave out free glasses.

“Rotary is big on polio eradication. Globally, we have spent over 2.6 billion dollars on the cause, and we continue awareness efforts to ensure Nigeria remains polio-free,” he added.

He described charitable donations as a noble act that did not necessarily require much.

“A small amount can put a smile on someone’s face or change their life forever,” he said.

Adetoba also noted that the club had sustainability measures in place to ensure the long-term impact of its projects.

Speaking on the essence of the President’s Night, he said it was an opportunity for the president to honour friends, associates, and supporters who have contributed to the club’s achievements over the year.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Stella Okotete, Executive Director of Business Development at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), and Hajiya Halima Buba, Managing Director of SunTrust Bank, were also honoured at the event for their outstanding contributions to society. Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, says that tea trade between China and Nigeria is thriving and enhancing trade relations between the two countries.

Yu said this in Abuja during the “2025 Tea for Harmony Yaji Cultural Salon” event with the theme “Tea in Nature’s Whisper: Aroma of Picturesque Jiangnan.”

The ambassador affirmed that tea trade between China and Nigeria had blossomed in recent years, with the introduction of Hainan Baisha tea to the Nigerian market in 2024.

According to him, this marks a new chapter in the collaboration between the two nations in relation to the tea industry.

“The tea fragrance crossing thousands of miles shows that a small tea leaf can not only nourish the body but also warm the soul, becoming a ‘green envoy’ that promotes economic, trade cooperation, and cultural exchanges between China and Nigeria.

“From the sweet tea stalls on the streets of Lagos to the mint tea found in the historic city of Kano, tea is not just a beverage but an important social bond,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of tea in Chinese culture, the envoy explained that the Chinese tea ceremony embodies five millennia of philosophical wisdom, emphasising harmony, purity, and elegance.

“The ethos of China’s tea ceremony, such as ‘harmony is precious’ and ‘making friends through tea,’ resonates profoundly with Nigeria’s cultural values, acting as a spiritual bridge between our two great civilisations,” he said.

He also pointed out the upgrading of bilateral relations to a meeting in 2024 between both countries’ heads of state in Beijing, aimed at deepening cooperation through a three-year initiative called the “Ten Partnership Actions for Modernisation,” which focuses on culture, tourism, and education.

Furthermore, the Ambassador noted that 2026 has been designated the “China-Africa Year of Cultural and People-to-People Exchange.”

As part of this initiative, he noted that Nigerian students are learning tea art and opera in China while showcasing their own music and dance in Chinese cultural settings.

Conversely, Chinese volunteers are promoting the Chinese language and tea culture in Nigeria, while also engaging with local languages and customs.

Yu also expressed the Embassy’s commitment to enhancing cooperation in various fields to strengthen the friendship between the two nations.

Also speaking, Mrs Huang Yun, Leader of the Zhejiang Delegation, Researcher-Librarian of Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Centre, said that tea and drama are cultural genes engraved in the blood of the Chinese people.

“Zhejiang, the land that gave birth to Lu Yu’s “The Classic of Tea” and Yue Opera “Butterfly Lovers”, today presents the poetic beauty of green mountains and dear waters and the lingering Wu dialect into a cup of tea and a piece of drama to Nigerian friends.

The event is themed “Tea in Nature’s Whisper Aroma of Picturesque Jiangnan”, interpreting the oriental philosophy of “symbiosis between man and nature,” she said.

NAN reports that the highlight of the event were performances by artists from the Chinese delegation from Zhejiang, including elegant Yue Opera and pipa music.

There were also exhibitions of Chinese calligraphy, painting, and photo displays showcasing Zhejiang’s culture and tourism. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Fate of Nigerian medical students from Sudan hangs in balance

Fate of Nigerian medical students from Sudan hangs in balance

A group of 47 Nigerian medical students who escaped war-torn Sudan in May 2023 are now struggling to register for the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council (MDCN) examination due to a document snag.

The students, many of who fled or were evacuated by the Federal Government without exit visas, are currently racing against time to meet the registration deadline, with their future careers hanging in the balance.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that these students, who were enrolled at Sudan International University (SIU), were evacuated to Nigeria during the 2023 conflict in Sudan while in final year of study.

According to the students, with the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC), they were permitted to continue their academic programme at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto.

Speaking to NAN on Sunday in Abuja, one student said: “We successfully completed our studies and graduated in 2024, receiving our certificates as students of SIU.”

He added that they were currently preparing to sit for the MDCN examinations.

The student, however, added that one of the requirements was presenting a first entry visa and a last exit visa.

“Unfortunately, none of us have these documents as most of our passports remained in Sudan due to the emergency evacuation.

“We respectfully request permission to sit for the examinations scheduled for June 2025,” he said.

The President of the Nigerian Students Association at SIU, Najid Hassan, confirmed that due to the war in Sudan, Nigerian students were evacuated by the Federal Government.

Hassan explained that with NUC approval, the affected students were allowed to continue their academic programme at UDUTH following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SIU and UDUTH.

“After the MoU, we resumed studies at UDUTH in December 2023 and spent one year there.

“We completed clinical rotations, lectures in gynaecology, pediatrics, surgery, and medicine, and graduated in October 2024.

“We took examinations supervised by consultants at UDUTH,” Hassan said.

He added that after graduation, students were awarded certificates bearing the SIU name.

Hassan, however, said that when they approached MDCN for registration, the process, expected to be seamless, became challenging.

“We are currently preparing for the MDCN exams, but one requirement is the submission of a ‘first entry visa and a last exit visa.’

“Unfortunately, none of us have these documents because most passports remain in Sudan due to emergency evacuation,” Hassan said.

He appealed to the Federal Government to intervene.

NAN reports that MDCN is the regulatory body for Medicine and Dentistry in Nigeria and was established by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act.

The Act had been operational since Dec. 18, 1963, and updated under the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The council’s statutory functions include setting and reviewing standards for medical and dental education.

Section 9(3) and (4) of the Act empowers the council to conduct assessment exams for holders of foreign medical or dental qualifications recognised by their countries of origin.

Candidates expected to sit for these examinations are trained outside Nigeria at institutions listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

One of the application requirements is submitting relevant portions of international passports, including visa and arrival/departure stamps.

In a 2024 publication addressing students returning from conflict zones, MDCN Registrar Dr Fatima Kyari, reaffirmed these rules but expressed sympathy for students affected by COVID-19 and conflicts in Ukraine and Sudan.

“The council has held extensive consultations and developed remediation pathways to facilitate integration.”

“Students graduating in 2023 or later were advised to return to a designated campus of their foreign university to complete studies physically.

“They can also transfer to an accredited Nigerian university, subject to NUC approval; or integrate into a Nigerian university per NUC guidelines.

“Many students from Sudan and Ukraine have successfully integrated through these pathways, exempting them from the foreign-trained medical and dental graduates (FTMDG) exams if graduating from Nigerian institutions,” Kyari said.

She explained that the MoU with UDUTH was an academic collaboration and did not equate to clinical training for medical qualification recognised by MDCN.

She noted that students who properly transferred and graduated from Nigerian universities approved by MDCN had been indexed, graduated, and registered as doctors.

The Federal Ministry of Education, through the Director of University Education, Hajiya Rakiya Ilyasu, acknowledged the situation.

She advised the affected students to formally write to the Minister of Education, including their names, and to copy the Director of Education Support Services to help facilitate a resolution.

Similarly, NUC Deputy Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, confirmed awareness of the development and advised students to contact the Ministry of Education to resolve the issues.

However, all efforts by NAN to obtain a response from Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), regarding the students’ plea proved unsuccessful.

Similarly, all efforts to get a reaction from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) failed.

The Deputy Provost of the Medical School, said he had no authority to speak on the issue, while the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Garba, said he was on transit and would respond appropriately.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Turkey culinary enriched by countless civilisations- Envoy

Turkey culinary enriched by countless civilisations- Envoy

Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, says the country has one of the world’s richest culinary traditions because Turkish foods have been enriched by traces of countless civilisations for centuries.

The envoy made this known during an interactive session with select diplomatic correspondents whom he hosted to a dinner on Saturday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was part of activities lined up to celebrate this year’s Turkish Cuisine Week in Türkiye and around the world.

The event is celebrated annually from May 21 to May 27 through various events across the world and in the country.

Poroy explained that centuries of peoples’ migration from different cultures and races to Turkey had culminated in Turkey becoming a melting pot for all aspects of life, including culinary traditions.

According to him, through the annual Turkish Cuisine Week, Turkey has continued to share its rich ‘gastronomic culture’ with the rest of the world.

He said that this year’s celebration aimed to build intercultural bridges with a focus on the backbone of Turkish cuisine’s “Classic Dishes.”

Commenting on the bilateral trade relations between Nigeria and Turkey, the ambassador disclosed that plan was underway to scale up the current trade volume to a target of 5 billion dollars.

He said the high number of travelers between the two countries with about 16 flights weekly required bolstering bilateral ties, and expanding visa centres to other big cities, apart from Abuja and Lagos.

NAN reports that Turkey’s Classic Dishes symbolise its cuisine’s traditional, healthy, and waste-free culinary heritage, which stand out as the shining gems of the cuisine, embodying natural rich flavors with unique preservation and cooking techniques.

Each dish reflects the traces of centuries-old traditions from Anatolia’s fertile soil and showcases the diversity of the Turkish cuisine and its universal value through their simplicity and natural flavors.

In Turkey, traditional dishes are far more than a collection of recipes, they are an intrinsic part of its culture, often bringing people together at the dinner table in a way that fosters connection and shared understanding.

They also offer a family-friendly start for those who want to get to know Turkish culture better as the basic recipes and products that shape the local cuisine of 81 provinces offer a colorful range of flavors in national celebrations.

The events at Turkey’s foreign missions reflect the warmth of the traditional Turkish hospitality, where different cultures come together at the tables and get to know each other without prejudice.

Dignitaries who attended the weeklong event, which began earlier in the week, included members of the Diplomatic Corps, comprising many foreign ambassadors to Nigeria and ECOWAS.

Also, some top officials of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs were in attendance.

The business community, including Mr Uche Osoka, Co-chair, Nigeria-Turkey Business Council, and Mr Tevfik Demirel, Head of Independent Industrialists and Businessmen Association’s Nigeria branch, among others, also graced the event.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Kola Oredipe, the founder of Samkey Athletics Club, has called for the support of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) as he aspires for the South-South zonal position on the board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

Oredipe, who is also the Director-General to the Bayelsa State Government on New Media, made the call on Saturday in Abeokuta while addressing newsmen.

He said he is running for the position of the South-South zonal representative on the board of AFN and would need the support of SWAN to coast to victory.

Oredipe emphasised that the association is his primary constituency, hence the need for their support in propagating his antecedents and gospel across the country and beyond.

He said that he is contesting for the position to contribute his experience to the growth of athletics in the region.

“I’m coming into the AFN board with innovation, inclusiveness, and grassroots development plans, as I believe regular competitions in the region will help discover, nurture, and grow young athletes,” he said.

Responding, Benjamin Isaiah, SWAN National President, extended the association’s solidarity to Oredipe while commending him for the bold steps to go into sports politics.

Isaiah stressed that the move would serve as inspiration to other journalists across the nation.

He said that the association would give him all the support he needed to win the contest, adding that his presence on the AFN board would benefit the association immensely.

“Your going into sports politics will serve as an inspiration to other journalists across the country, he said.

The president said that henceforth, the association would ensure that it was represented on the boards of all sports federations to protect its interests.

He said that the representation of the association on the boards of sports federations must not be limited to media officers only. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
