Helen Kwanashie, a Professor of Pharmacology at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), says the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode of learning democratises education and breaks geographical barriers.

Kwanashie, a professor in the NOUN’s Faculty of Health Sciences, made this submission during a valedictory lecture delivered at the university’s headquarters on Friday in Abuja.

The lecture was titled “From Chalkboards to Digital Networks: A Career Academic’s Forty-Four Year Journey from Face-to-Face Teaching through Open and Distance Education to Social Learning.’’

Kwanashie, in the lecture, traced her four and a half decades of teaching career, marked by dedication and unwavering commitment to learning.

She reflected on how technology had transformed education in the country.

“The chalkboard was my first canvas, but digital networks have allowed me to reach students across Nigeria and beyond.”

Kwanashie said her teaching journey started off in social learning at the Ahmadu Bello University (Abu), got more extensive at NOUN, and finally to advocating for social learning models that foster collaboration and inclusivity.

She provided a comparative analysis of face-to-face learning, ODL, and social learning, emphasising the strengths and challenges of each.

“Face-to-face learning fosters immediate interaction, but ODL democratises education, and breaks geographical barriers.

“Social learning integrates collaborative and technology-driven approaches, creating dynamic learning ecosystems.”

Kwanashie painted a picture of the evolution of teaching tools and methodologies, and her transition from the era of blackboards and chalk, through whiteboards, to the current age of interactive smartboards that have bridged physical and digital learning spaces.

She recounted her impact at NOUN where she presented data that included a compelling chart that demonstrated a general uptick in student performance and a drastic reduction in failure rates during her time as supervisor.

Addressing gender equity, she called for systemic changes at NOUN to support women, particularly those with young children and advocated for the establishment of a crèche to improve attendance and academic performance among female students and staff.

“Empowering women in education requires practical support systems that acknowledge their unique challenges.

“This will envision an “open” educational landscape where technology and inclusivity converge to make learning accessible to all.

“I also use this opportunity to advocate for the establishment of the Drosophila Lab in the university, which utilises Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) as a model for pharmacological research.

“It offers a cost-effective, ethical alternative to mammalian models, and advancing bioscience education and drug discovery.

“The establishment of this lab will position NOUN as a leader in innovative research,” she said.

Kwanashie also spoke on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in counselling and content personalisation, emphasising its role in reducing dissatisfaction and improving student satisfaction in ODL.

On her post-retirement aspirations, the 70-year-old professor shared plans to continue mentoring young academics, expand her Drosophila research, and explore AI-driven counseling to support distance-learning students.

NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, had earlier recounted their shared journey that began at the University of Ibadan and where they had even taken Chemistry classes together.

“Helen and I were classmates in Chemistry; even then, her discipline and seriousness were unmistakable.

“She will sit right at the front — meticulous and incredibly focused; we crossed paths a few times through our careers, and I have been privileged to watch her evolve from a brilliant student to a respected scholar,” he said.

The vice-chancellor lauded Kwanashie as a visionary lecturer who had bridged traditional and digital education and re-affirmed NOUN’s commitment to her recommendations, including the crèche and further development of the Drosophila Lab.

He also praised her for recognising the university’s support, noting that her gratitude reflected the collaborative spirit that defined NOUN. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Prof. Zainab Duke-Abiola, wife of late Chief MKO Abiola, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his economic reforms, resulting in the repayment of $3.4 billion dollars debt owed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In a statement she personally signed on Friday, Duke-Abiola noted that the milestone had sparked celebrations and renewed hope in Nigeria’s economic future.

“The repayment is not a fluke; it is the outcome of careful strategic planning and unwavering commitment to improving Nigeria’s socio-economic rating globally,” Duke-Abiola said.

She described the development as a historic milestone, attributing it to President Tinubu’s visionary leadership, meticulous economic management, and commitment to sustainable growth and development.

By repaying the debt, Duke-Abiola believed President Tinubu has restored hope and ameliorated the doldrums, ultimately freeing Nigeria from “Neo-colonial shackles.

“The toga of indebtedness to IMF has been removed just like Singapore and Switzerland, which hold some of the strongest passports in the world.

”Nigeria is truly free from Neo-colonial shackles. We are free at last,” she added.

Duke-Abiola noted that under President Tinubu, Nigeria has fully repaid a debt that stood at $1.61 billion when he assumed office in 2023, reduced it to $1.37 billion by Jan. 5, 2024; $933.03 million by July 10, 2024; and $472.06 million by Jan. 8, 2025 before being completely settled in May 2025.

She emphasised that President Tinubu’s leadership is yielding results, setting the pace for a new era of fiscal responsibility, infrastructural development and better social service delivery.

“President Tinubu’s leadership is yielding results. Nigeria is not just settling debts but setting the pace for a new era of fiscal responsibility, infrastructural development and better social service delivery,” she said.

Duke-Abiola also reflected on her personal experience during the 2023 general elections.

According to her, during the last elections when I was mobilising nationwide voters for President Tinubu, some people were angry and decided to get a former orderly to frame me that I asked a cook to assault an orderly.

“I thank God for my complete vindication and exoneration,” she added.

She expressed admiration for President Tinubu, saying, “the world should watch out because Tinubu is a President poised to surpass Donald Trump of the U.S. in international negotiations and surpass Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso.

“I know all this because I have known his patriotic mindset for over 30 years.”

Duke-Abiola advised Nigerians not to overheat the polity, adding that President Tinubu came prepared as an “Angel of Restoration”. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Health: Rights activist to launch 5m database for Nigerian women

Women reproductive health rights activist, Dr Ejike Oji, on Friday inaugurated Local Organising Committee (LOC), for a five million Women Database (Womendb), to tackle women health-related challenges.

Oji, President/CEO Dr Ejike Oji Community Development Foundation and Convener, Womendb, said the initiative was aimed at empowering women and promoting their contributions across various fields.

He said that the initiative sought to build the capacity of women, provide a one-stop shop for accessing reproductive health and right information and services.

The former Nigeria Country Director of an international non-profit organisation, Ipas, noted that lack of organised and coherent data on women and women groups make it difficult to tackle challenges confronting women.

According to him, the novel initiative, which is IT driven, is under Dr Ejike Oji Community Development Foundation.

He explained that the foundation would collate data from women across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The database would help in harnessing collective voices for advocacy; facilitating extensive information transmission and limited success in implementing women focused programme,” he said.

He said that already the foundation had commenced developing the database, with the FCT topping the list.

Oji, who said that the foundation would adopt ‘hub and spoke approach’, added that both women in urban centres and rural areas would benefit.

“Womendb is a rapidly growing women group, focused on using the numerical strength of women all over the world to provide opportunities for its members.

“The mission is to enrol five million women into the database, and then we shall be going to 11 African countries, where we already have partners.

“The Womendb, to be officially launched on July 11, to mark my 70th birthday, is expected to provide valuable insights, foster collaboration and promote the accomplishments of women in communities and beyond,” he said.

He said joining the initiative will provide network access for key services and commodities, connection to development interventions and other potential benefits.

“It will facilitate access to grants, loans and micro-credit supports; facilitate large scale cooperative associations, advance access to health services, organised mechanism for measurable advantages for members.

“It will also provide a framework for easier dissemination of information to members; framework for easier administration of collection of dues; key data, disaggregation by age groups, interests, location and occupation,” he said.

Oji said that the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN); National Council for Women Societies (NCWS); International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA); religious groups, among others are registered members of the Womendb.

He, therefore, urged more women to key into the initiative to enable them benefit from various programmes of the foundation.

Dr Kole Shettima, Political Scientists and Development Specialist Director, MacArthur Foundation Nigeria, in a goodwill message, said that the initiative would provide opportunities for women to access healthcare services and economic empowerment exercises.

Also, Dr Austin Onouha, Executive Director, Peace and South-East Project, said that the Womendb would address challenges of accessing data for references, innovation and implementing programmes targeting women.

On his part, Mr Joshua Adams of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), assured the foundation of media support in championing their goals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the LOC has Dr Oji as its chairman with more than seven sub-committees, while the formal launch comes up on July 31 in Abuja. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Opportunities abound for wealth creation in space sector – DG

Opportunities abound for wealth creation in space sector – DG

Dr Matthew Adepoju, Director General, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), says opportunities abound for wealth creation in the space sector to aid youth employment.

Adepoju said this on Friday while speaking with newsmen on the sidelines of the 2025 National Space Research and Development Agency top management retreat in Uyo.

He said the agency had concluded plans to train 200,000 youths with skills acquisition to catch up with opportunities in the space sector.

The DG said to achieve this, NASRDA would build skills acquisition centres across the six geopolitical zones of the country, where the youths could be trained in different skills.

“We are introducing some skills acquisition for youth employment because we have observed that they need skills; wherever you have problems, that is potential money, that is potential jobs, that is opportunities.

“But when you don’t have the skills to tackle the problems and turn the situation to wealth creation, that’s why we brought up skills acquisition hub which is taking off soon.

“The first one out of the six of the regional centres will be completed and be commissioned this year, where we can train up to 200,000 youths every year in every region.

“So, we believe all these things are going to contribute to the economy of the country and solve the problems of youth unemployment,” Adepoju said.

Adepoju added that NASRDA would also, within the next one year, launch two new satellites into space to replace the old one launched since 2011.

He said that the country had secured a seat in the blue region to ensure the launch becomes a reality as process of selection was ongoing of the Nigerian that would benefit from the initiative.

According to him, the initiative would be in collaboration with Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) in USA.

“In the next six months to one year, definitely NASRDA will launch at least two out of the four satellites into the orbit.

“Then the programme of the first Nigeria, first African to be in space would have been a reality too, because we have already secured the seat in the blue origin.

“So, we are in the process of selection of the Nigerian that will be the beneficiary of this initiative. It is a collaboration between NASRDA and SERA in USA,” he said.

The director general further said that President Bola Tinubu had approved the take off grant for the space regulations and spectrum management in Nigeria.

He said that lack of space regulations had been the reason many of the telecommunications companies operating in the country were rendering poor services to Nigerians.

“Many of the services rendered to us in Nigeria are substandard.

“Let’s look at direct to home television, even telephone, you are in the middle of telephone everything is dropping, is because of the transponder they are using.

“I was really disappointed in the room while I was listening to the President’s acceptance speech and because it was cloudy and about to rain, everything went off the screen.

“It is because nobody is regulating the space sector which is the function of NASRDA both the upstream, midstream and downstream,” he said.

Adepoju noted the space sector was now the biggest economy in the whole world, adding that private sector should get involved to grow the economy, create jobs and tackle insecurity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retreat’s theme is: “NASRDA Beyond the Horizon: Building a Resilient Workforce for Space Economy and National Security.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
