The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGI) says it will train students of various Nigerian universities on how to convert and maintain CNG vehicles.

Mr Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director/Chief Executive, P-CNGI, who disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday, said the capacity building would be achieved under the Special Palliative Relief on University Transportation (CNG – SPROUT) Projects.

Oluwagbemi made this known at the commissioning of the pilot phase of the project CNG SPROUT at the FEMADEC AutoGas Centre, Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, formerly UniAbuja.

The Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Mr Ekperikpe Ekpo, alongside other dignitaries commissioned the project which would be delivered in 20 university campuses across the country.

The CNG – SPROUT Project is an initiative aimed at deploying and promoting CNG- powered buses, tricycles, conversion centres and refueling infrastructure to university campuses nationwide to cushion transportation cost.

Oluwagbemi said through hands-on training and technical facilitators, students would not just ride in CNG vehicles but would learn how to convert and maintain vehicles.

Oluwagbemi described the training as a critical step toward building a green-skilled workforce for Nigeria’s energy transition.

“The PCNGI is proud to contribute CNG-powered buses and tricycles to university campuses — a cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable mode of transport that not only reduces our carbon footprint but also eases the burden on students and staff.

“But we didn’t stop there.

“With conversion kits and technical facilitators, we are planting the seeds of capacity-building.

“Through hands-on training, students will not just ride in CNG vehicles — they will learn how to convert and maintain them,” he said.

He described the project as a timely, transformative initiative born of true collaboration.

He said through the strategic partnership between the P-CNGI, the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF), and other partners it would deliver more than just buses and tricycles.

We are delivering hope, innovation, and a future-forward solution to the mobility and energy challenges facing our academic communities in line with the vision of President Bola Tinubu.

“If you recall in his first address after May 29, 2023 the President indeed promised deploying CNG buses and particularly on our campuses.

“We are here fulfilling that promise after doing the needful to build awareness and an ecosystem for CNG in Nigeria.

“Project SPROUT is more than a name, it is a symbol. A symbol of how targeted intervention, powered by collaboration and guided by vision, can yield lasting impact,” he said. (NAN)

Alfa Designs secures NMDPRA’s approval to convert diesel engines to CNG

Alfa Designs secures NMDPRA’s approval to convert diesel engines to CNG

Alfa Designs Nigeria Limited, a leading oil and gas company, says it has secured approval to begin conversion of diesel-powered engines to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the country.

The company said the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) had done the Proof of Concept (POC) on its conversion kits and granted a five-year licence to deploy the kits.

Mr Quadri Fatai, Group Managing Director, Alfa Designs Nigeria Limited, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

Fatai said that the conversion would enable all diesel-powered, trucks, vehicles, engines, generators and draggers to be converted to a dual fuel-powered system.

According to the chief executive officer, the dual fuel powered system will be used interchangeably, because the conversion is not 100 per cent CNG.

Fatai disclosed that the conversion kits had a device, called Telematrix that would be installed alongside the components of the conversion kits, which could assist in automatic tracking of converted vehicles or engines.

“So, basically we already have the kits after following up all the necessary protocols to get the kits approved by the regulator.

“And then the kits also have a very fantastic device called Telematrix to be installed alongside the kits.

“The Telematrix actually enables one to assess the condition of the engine, equipment or vehicle and also to be able to track their location via online.’’

He said the device could help an engine user in terms of maintenance, and could also help the Federal Government in tracking tankers while supplying and distributing petroleum products.

“Instead of having too many securities on the way, trying to track the tankers that are meant to supply products, installing kits with the Telematrix will guarantee security and bring down high logistics cost.

“After conversion, the Telematrix reveals the real-time amount of diesel of which an engine is consuming and the amount of gas it is actually consuming.

“And if anyone tampers with the device, it will also reflect that it has been tampered with.’’

Fatai said the dual conversion ratio in terms of 30 per cent diesel and 70 per cent CNG would definitely bring down the cost of logistics.

“The advantage is that it will bring down the volume of the diesel and assists the engine to have a complete combustion, because while burning only diesel, there is possibility that the engine’s condition might not have a complete combustion.

“Most of the diesel engines produce carbon soot, a thick smoke, which is a sign that the engines are having incomplete combustion, causing a whole lot of pollution.’’

He said that the company was also partnering with one of the biggest CNG-powered generator manufacturing company in China to deploy generators for its facilities.

Speaking on the cost of the conversion, he said the price would only be ascertained after evaluating the vehicle or engine because factors such as the size and condition of the engines would be put into consideration.

“The conversion price will be based on the capacity and specification of the engine that is being converted.

“But the savings you are going to make by installing the kits on your system and operating it at long duration will have a repay back in less than three months because CNG is costs effective,’’ he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Alfa Designs to deploy CNG cascades to spur availability

Alfa Designs to deploy CNG cascades to spur availability

Alfa Designs Nigeria Ltd., a leading oil and gas company, says it is set to deploy Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cascade to proximity areas to spur its availability in the country.

The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Quadri Fatai, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

CNG cascade is a system of interconnected, high-pressure gas cylinders used for storing and transporting CNG.

It is essentially a series of cylinders arranged in a way that allows for efficient storage and dispensing of CNG.

NAN reports that motorists have raised concern and complained bitterly about the unavailability of CNG and constant queues at refilling stations in the country.

Speaking with NAN, Fatai said the company was working out modalities to ensure that issues responsible for CNG unavailability were adequately addressed, adding that the proximity of having CNG around should be considered.

The expert said it had procured the first batch of 10 CNG cascades, which would be deployed soon after certification.

He said it was currently engaging the Standards Organisation of Nigeria third party inspection company for inspection, certification and licence issuance for the cylinders.

In order to ease distribution to different areas of proximity, he said it would also deploy a 100 per cent CNG-powered truck with a self-loader for distribution/dispensation of CNG.

“We are deploying about 450kg capacity CNG cascade (a storage facility) at designated places, which will allow CNG to be filled and stored in it with total weight at three tonnes.

“We are also coming with 100 per cent CNG-powered truck vehicle with self loader for distribution and dispensation.

“The idea is for the cascade to be filled and deployed at various fuel refilling partners’ outlets, where motorists can access to refill their vehicles.

“Once the inspection and certification of the cylinders are completed, the next thing is to ship them to Nigeria and do clearing,’’ he added.

He described logistics and limited infrastructure as the major factors behind unavailability of CNG, adding that the logistics involved in handling CNG projects are quite a lot.

“In order for you to understand the fundamental principle of these factors, I will need to quickly make a simple narrative between Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and the CNG.

“It is easier to deploy LPG than to deploy CNG, because the LPG operates at almost 35 bar pressure, while CNG is operating between 200 to 300 bar.

“The pressure is the function of the thickness or weight of the material. So, what it means is that the LPG cylinder will always be lighter in weight compared to the weight of the CNG cylinder,” he said.

The expert said that the company was coming up with a lot of package and initiatives to ease or solve the logistic issues to enable availability of CNG in the country.

He said to ease CNG deployment across the country, necessary logistics should be provided to handle the weight of the CNG and bring it in a compatible shape.

He further underscored the need to encourage companies that would like to build mother station infrastructure, to gradually extend the pipeline network of gas distribution.

He said concern had been raised on the safety, economic benefits and global regulations and compliance of CNG conversion, including factors bothering its logistics and usage.

According to him, to foster safety, the Nigeria Institute of Standards and SON are supposed to be checking continuously the integrity of the LPG and CNG cylinders.

He decried the fact that because of the price associated with CNG kits and cylinders, quacks are already locally fabricating the cylinders, toying with explosive things.

“The destructive power of a four bar gas cylinder is almost equivalent to one grenade (an explosive military weapon),’’ he warned.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has applauded what it described as the multi-faceted impact of the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Shedrach Sunday, the group acknowledged the inflow of N760 billion investment into the CNG initiative.

“We note that with the removal of fuel subsidy at the inception of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, and the attendant increase in cost of premium motor spirit, the Federal government rolled out the Compressed Natural Gas Initiative.

It said that this has led to cheaper cost of transportation for many Nigerians as CNG continues to take root in the country.

It stressed that the initiative had attracted about N760 billion in private investments into the venture in the past one year.

It added that in dollars terms, the initiative has attracted about $491 million investment into the country, and there are signs that more investments would flow in subsequent years.

“Additionally, the CNG Initiative has generated 84,000 direct and indirect jobs, and this is based on information provided by the PCNGI Programme Director, Michael Oluwagbemi.

“We also note that within a period of one year, CNG conversion centres have increased from seven to over 200 centres across the country with expectations of an increase to 10,000 by the end of the first quarter of 2005.

The media group commended the Federal Government for providing 405 buses to ease the transportation needs of Nigerians workers.

It said this was based on an agreement with Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress during the wage increase negotiations.

“We want to state that this initiative is not only pragmatic, but has potential to reduce unemployment, boost the economy, and increase the mobility of Nigerians when it takes firm root.

“We, however, urge the managers to do more because of the immense benefits of the CNG-Initiative which, if harnessed well, will put smiles on the faces of Nigerians,” it added.

TMV also noted that it looks forward to the extension of the CNG initiative to 25 sites and 15 states in line with the pledge of the managers of the programme to ramp up its activities.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

CNG: Tinubu & promise of cheaper energy for posterity

CNG: Tinubu & promise of cheaper energy for posterity

By Oche Echeija Egwa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy on May 29th, 2023, will always be remembered for its audacity. And the President himself will be in history books for his uncommon courage.

Now, less than two years later, the alternative is steadily paying-off, not only for motorists and transporters, but also for businesses and households.

Noticeably, the long, serpentine petrol queues that bedevilled the transportation industry in the past have gradually disappeared across the country. There is a growing interest in cheaper alternative sources of energy, like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.

Interestingly, new queues have resurfaced around filling stations, largely stimulated by demand for gas.

While inaugurating 30 hybrid CNG-powered buses on August 12, 2024, as part of palliatives to reduce the effects of removing subsidy from PMS (Premium Motor Spirit), the President assured that the relatively new bride, CNG, was cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly.

President Tinubu said commercial vehicles accounted for more than 80 per cent of the nation’s petrol demand and daily consumption. He noted that instituting a more affordable and reliable alternative with gas would create a new lease of life, reduce cost of living and cut the corruption in petrol subsidies.

Removing the strangling subsidy, he said, was economic salvation for the nation and posterity.

“Countries like India have mandated CNG for all commercial vehicles since 2004. In Nigeria, commercial vehicles make up about 80 per cent of our petroleum demand, costing us trillions of Naira every month.

“The solution is here. We have it. We will work on it. We promise you, definitely, things will get better. Prosperity will be achieved.

“I thank Innoson Motors and others who have been committed to changing the narrative in this country. Utilising natural gas to power our transportation industry is the next way to go. Like many countries, Nigeria will work harder and be productive with our own gas. It is an economic necessity that we should embrace,’’ the President added.

According to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Nigeria has the 9th largest natural gas reserves in the world. The reserves of Associated and Non-Associated Gas stood at 209.26 trillion cubic feet (TCF) as of January 1, 2024.

At filling stations in Abuja, and most parts of the country, some motorists have converted their vehicles to hybrids, sharing the benefits of gas, which include cost efficiency, reliability and environmental friendliness.

“You can see that queues for petrol have given way to gas,’’ a transporter, Ibrahim Bala Aminu, said at an NNPC station in Gudu, Abuja. “Gas is far cheaper. With N5,000 to fill my cylinder, I can work for a whole day, compared to spending N65,000 to fill my tank with petrol.’’

Anosike Uzo, a mechanic and spare parts dealer, describes gas as “a game changer” in the Nigerian transportation sector.

Updating newsmen at the Presidential Villa on achievements of the Presidential initiative, the Programme Director of Presidential CNG Initiative, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, said the PCNGI had been able to stimulate demand, and encourage the private sector to invest in the implementation of the policy.

“No doubt, after an intensive stakeholder engagement and public awareness campaign from May to November 2024, the PCNGI’s most important achievement was to convince the private sector to invest critical funds alongside the government’s investments upon stimulation of demand by commercial vehicle operators and private vehicle users alike.

“We have attracted over $491million of investments in the past year to AutoNG and we are very proud of it. This has created over 9,000 direct and 75,000 indirect jobs,’’ he said.

To further actualise the President’s vision for cheaper alternatives to petrol, and domesticating the initiative, Oluwagbemi said Nigeria’s conversion capacity of vehicles from pure petrol and diesel to bi-fuel vehicles was raised by almost 3,000 per cent with more than 200 new conversion centres established.

Before now, he noted that only seven conversion centres existed in the entire country.

“About 22,000 conversion kits were initially procured and started being delivered in October 2024 to the programme by the Ministry of Finance. Already, we are on course for 10,000 conversions by the end of this quarter under this program having started in December, 2024.

“More recently, that programme has been expanded by the PCNGI to enable deep discounts for public servants and finance the balance of costs for converting their vehicles working with another major initiative of Mr President, which is the Credit Corp. We will soon launch that initiative with the public sector unions,’’ he stated.

Allaying the fears of reported explosions in Benin, Edo State, the programme director said investigations had revealed that some of the cylinders and conversions were done by amateur technicians.

“At this point let me be clear, that the sole safety incident that occurred in Benin last year was a result of economic saboteurs engaged in illegal fabrication of CNG cylinders and were arrested by the police.

“With Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVSM) in place, that incident will be avoided as only properly labelled & accredited vehicles with certified tanks will be refuelled. The necessary steps to launch NGVMS are on-going, and we expect it to be in place by year end.

“We won’t relent in ensuring the safety of lives and investments of participants in the sector. This was why we prioritised regulatory standards issuance from the get-go in March 2024 and continue to work with these agencies especially Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) & National Automotive Design and Development Council. (NADDC). We enjoin all participants to ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements on safety and security,’’ he said.

Oluwagbemi explained that gas filling stations had been directed to stop attending to vehicles that were poorly converted to avoid mishaps in the future.

“If you also recall, demonstrating the efficacy of CNG and EV platforms, CNG buses and tricycles as well EV buses were procured on our behalf by the Federal Ministry of Finance. A total of 655 buses were procured.

“421 CNG Buses and 36 EV buses have been delivered so far, the program has deployed 405 buses either as part of the settlement of terms with the NLC and TUC as part of the wage negotiations, or to the transport unions being run commercially in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Transportation or through the partnership with state transport companies that was launched last year.

“The Renewed Hope Mass Transit scheme launched during the Yuletide period providing free or discounted rides during that time, has now continued commercially and will soon be launched for tricycles as soon as we sort out the last mile gas infrastructure scheme,’’ the programme director noted.

He said the queues for gas would be reduced over time with ongoing mapping and opening of stations in strategic locations for ease of access, particularly for state commuters.

“Speaking about the last mile gas infrastructure scheme, we are aware that as a result of our successful awareness campaign last year and groundbreaking initiatives like CIP that pay the private sector to convert vehicles to CNG, there has been a visible gap in CNG availability at the last mile. We note the longer queues in some locales but assure this is temporary.

“The influx of CNG trucks as our industries invest and the over 30,000 CNG conversions undertaken by the private sector – having more than quintupled the CNG fleet of Nigeria – naturally will put pressure on our gas infrastructure. But the PCNGI is not relenting in solutions,’’ he said.

Oluwagbemi explained that an aggressive Last Mile Gas Infrastructure scheme, refuelling on lending Programme, would provide equipment at cost for refuelling to key conversion centres and refuelling partners.

He said 25 sites would benefit, and 15 states for the project, with the first site in Kwara State, while Kogi, Ekiti, Rivers and Abuja would be completed by May 1, 2025.

“By June 12 we shall have Kaduna, Abia, Enugu joining the fray with Niger, Kano and Benue following shortly thereafter.

“To further bolster this base infrastructure, we have co-opted our private sector partners to deploy over 150 new refuelling locations in the next 18 months. NNPC has already deployed 12 sites, with 8 to go this quarter, and approval for an additional 100 sought and secured for the next 18-24 months,’’ he said .

“NIPCO has imported equipment for 32 daughter station sites with 22 in operation and 8 under construction. Bovas has 8 under construction and AY Shafa has completed one with 9 under construction. Entities like Ibile Oil and Gas, MBH and Mikano are also investing in not just daughter stations but also mother stations.

“Just this week, l visited the largest mother station under construction in Nigeria by Mikano in Ogun State that will have 12 dispensing arms for large trucks, that are rapidly converting to CNG and has the potential to drive down food and goods inflation rate by reducing costs by up to 80 per cent! To this end, the Diesel Conversion Program will be launched this year by the PCNGI to accelerate this process,’’ he added.

On building capacity to meet up with the growing demands for the bi-fuel vehicles, the programme director pointed out that more than 1,500 technicians were trained last year, and another 5,000 would be up-skilled in 2025.

“This will ensure that Nigeria’s CNG sector is underpinned by strong local content and capacity. Active training and collaboration with national institutions like the Nigeria Army and Police is also on-going, as well as institutions like NITT, NADDC, SMEDAN and NASENI,’’ he said.

The programme director also disclosed that the university community would be fully involved in the expansion of the project, while appreciating President Tinubu for the political will to push the country into the future, and purposeful leadership dexterity of the Steering Committee led by Dr Zacch Adedeji.

At the interaction with journalists, Mr Bayo Onauga, Special Adviser to the President, Information & Strategy, said the President had also directed the team to prioritise use of electric vehicles in Nigeria as suitable alternatives to petrol.

“The CNG and electrical vehicle programme are dear to Mr President.

“When he removed the fuel subsidy, he felt the pains of Nigerians, but it was expedient. And he said a solution must be found in using gas and electric vehicles,’’ Onanuga said.

With the benefits of cost effectiveness, the clean energy engendering cleanliness of our environment and cheaper maintenance gradually trickling down in the transport sector and beyond, transporters and motorists in Nigeria are hopeful of a brighter and more sustainable energy source delivered purposefully by President Tinubu.

Abuja, March 31, 2025 (NAN) Alfa Designs Nigeria, a leading oil and gas company, is set to begin conversion of diesel engine vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Research Engineer for Alfa Designs, Mubarak Abdul, made this public in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

Abdul said that the company remained committed to ensuring a cleaner and greener future for Nigeria.

” When you put on your diesel generators or start your diesel trucks, you can see how thick smoke comes out.

”So, we sat down and we checked how we could contribute to the reduction of the soot.

” We came up with what we call the dual fuel engine conversion kit.

”We are partnering with a foreign company to get the dual fuel kit started soon in Nigeria,” he said.

Abdul said that the dual fuel kit would enable the engine, truck or car to use less of diesel and more of gas.

He said these could be either Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or CNG.

The CNG, he said, would replace much of the diesel and there would be a mixture of the CNG and the diesel, resulting in low emission.

Abdul also said there would be absence of soot with this process.

He said his company was committed to the Paris Agreement and the Protocols, adding that Alfa Design had pledged to reduce emissions by 2030.

”The advantage of the dual fuel kit is that it will reduce cost and reduce emission,” he added.

Abdul said Alfa Designs would also introduce a Computed Tomography (CT) machine.

He said CT machine was now being used in industries for advanced inspections.

”Over the years, we heard about the CT machine in the medical line.

”Whenever they want to carry out an advance inspection, the CT machine is used to tell you what you cannot see with your bare eyes

”Our company had brought the CT machine to the country and we aim to support the advanced inspection in industry with this machine,” he said.

Abdul further said that with the machine, oil and gas firms could carry out rock physics analysis and other investigations easily.

”Before you determine that there is oil in a particular place or even after you find oil, you have to carry out ‘well characterisation.’

”This means you have to check the physical properties of the place and the CT machine will help industries to do a lot of the analysis with ease,” he said.

Abdul urged Nigerians to adopt every means to tackle greenhouse gas emissions, saying they could have negative effects on the long run.

He identified some major problems associated with greenhouse gas emissions to include flooding and global warming, urging Nigerians to support the government and its initiatives.(NAN)

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) has deployed 160 CNG buses through its transport union partners and sub-nationals, to cushion the effect of high transport cost occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.

Mr Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director/Chief Executive, P-CNGi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

Oluwagbemi said they had already deployed 75 buses to the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) through the Ministry of Transportation.

He said among the buses deployed to the unions, five each were dedicated for intra-state and 20 each for inter-state.

“Last year, during the yuletide we deployed 160 CNG buses to our union partners, through the Ministry of Transportation, namely – NURTW, RTEAN and NARTO.

“We deployed 75 buses through the transport unions and another 85 buses totaling 160 buses to the state government affiliated mass transit companies including Oyo, Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos states and FCT among others.

“All of these transport companies, affiliated with the state government received different levels of buses, some received 15, 20, 25 and 30 buses and they have started operations.

“In the case of Pacesetters transport company, Oyo for example, we deployed 15 buses, and during the yuletide from Lagos to Ibadan they were able to bring down the prices to N3, 200 on a route that normally cost N8,000.

“People that were using patrol buses also experienced a discount because there was pressure on the price of transportation within the parks that they loaded which brought down the price to N6,000.

“These are some of the benefits that we are beginning to see from the deployment of CNG vehicles across Nigeria.

“What we intend to do this year is to focus and concentrate on deployment between Lagos and Abuja and also work with the sub-nationals to fill the gaps across Nigeria,’’ he said.

He said that 15 of the buses were deployed for intra-state, while 60 were for inter-state.

According to Oluwagbemi, all the buses deployed to the various states have started operating at 50 per cent discount, with an effective monitoring system.

He said that the FCT residents had enjoyed 40 days free rides on the buses as part of the benefits of the administration.

The P-CNGi CEO said that residents of FCT were currently enjoying a 30 per cent discount on any ride following the expiration of the free ride.

According to him, in order to enjoy this benefit, Nigerians should get on the buses by utilising specific parks operated by these unions and get a card which monitors the number of passengers on board.

“Ultimately, this is the journey; it starts by us recognising that we should utilise our God’s given resources, which is natural gas, to power this economy and make sure we reduce the cost of transportation and enhance the quality of lives of Nigerians.”

The P-CNGi is a component of the palliative intervention of the President Bola Tinubu administration directed at providing succour to the masses, occasioned by the transitive hardships of the fuel subsidy removal policy. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has said that the country’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion capacity increased by over 2,500 per cent in 2024.

Mr Farouk Ahmed, Authority Chief Executive, NMDPRA, said this on Thursday in Abuja, at the inaugural Petroleum Industry Stakeholders’ Forum, organised by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

Ahmed said that NMDPRA supported the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) by stimulating 186 new conversion centers which triggered the county’s conversion capacity.

“The NMDPRA will continue to collaborate with the PCNGI to ensure deployment of CNG infrastructure in major cities of Lagos and Abuja, up to 100,000 conversions, while collaborating with states to develop Nigeria Gas Vehicles (NGVs) in other areas.

“The development of CNG as a viable alternative to Petrol has been incentivised.

“These conversions alongside new buys have raised the Nigerian Gas Vehicles population to an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 vehicles and trucks, and it continues to grow daily.

“With over 400 million dollars attracted for investment in 86 and 65 new daughters and mother stations under construction respectively, Nigeria refueling capacity has therefore risen from 20 to 56,” he said.

Ahmed said that the collaboration between PCNGI, NMDPRA and Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) led to the development of standards and the NGV Monitoring System expected to be inaugurated this year.

“The NMDPRA also collaborates with the SON, the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and the National Institute of Transportation Technology (NITT) in ensuring that our mobility CNG growth is achieved in a safe and sustainable manner,” he said.

The NMDPRA boss, however, listed some challenges facing the initiative to include establishment and operation of petroleum handling facilities without proper licensing, permits and authorisations.

He listed other challenges to include poor collaborations for Open/ third party access to facilities and lack of cooperation of some operators for an effective regulatory oversight, in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) provisions.

“We implore the industry to adhere to all regulatory requirements, especially as they relate to safety, efficiency, best practices, sustainability, consumer protection and community participation.

“As we progress into 2025, the NMDPRA will continue to consolidate on its successes for enhanced regulatory oversight.

“This will include the upgrade of our laboratories for enhanced product quality analysis and referencing, inter-agency collaborations, automation and sustainability in the industry,” Ahmed said. (NAN)

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), says it is collaborating with Rolling Energy to convert 100,000 vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in 18 months.

The Director-General of SMEDAN, Dr Charles Odii said this at the unveiling of a CNG Conversion and Training Center on Friday in Abuja.

According to him, the initiative will support Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the initiative is a collaboration between SMEDAN, Rolling Energy, and Pi-CNG

“This new centre is designed to convert vehicles to run on CNG, an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuels.

“With its capacity to convert nine vehicles daily and a dedicated team of 20 technicians, the centre will help SMEs reduce transportation costs and adapt to changing energy needs.

“It will also train young Nigerians in CNG conversion, maintenance, and repair, equipping them with practical skills and opening up new business opportunities”.

According to Odii, the mandate of the Pi-CNG initiative is to roll out about one million converted cars in the next 18 months.

“We at SMEDAN are committing to taking 10 per cent of those cars to be converted at our centres,’’ he said.

According to Odii, the project aligned with SMEDAN’s GROW Nigerian strategy, which focuses on providing SMEs with Guidance, Resources, Opportunities, and Workforce Support.

“By adopting CNG, we are helping SMEs cut costs while promoting sustainable energy practices. This effort is particularly timely as businesses face rising fuel costs following subsidy removal.

“SMEDAN is also committed to improving access to critical infrastructure for SMEs. We are upgrading Industrial Development Centres across the country to provide affordable tools and power tailored to the needs of small businesses.

The California’s Secretary of Transportation, Mr Toks Omishakin, praised Nigeria’s efforts in adopting cleaner energy alternatives, such as CNG, but urged stakeholders to look beyond CNG and invest in long-term renewable solutions.

“I see a tremendous opportunity for collaboration between California and Nigeria in exploring renewable energy solutions like solar, wind, and hydrogen,” Omishakin said.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Mr Toyin Zubair, commended SMEDAN and other stakeholders for their contributions.

He emphasised the need to harness Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources to drive the economy.

“Nigeria has one of the largest gas reserves in the world. By using this resource locally to power vehicles and industries, we can reduce costs and create a cleaner environment,” Zubair said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Rolling Energy, Mr Mubarak Danbatta, explained that the conversion process prioritised safety and affordability, making it accessible to SMEs.

“With less than N4,000, a vehicle can be fully fueled with CNG, compared to over N60,000 for petrol. This is a significant relief for businesses.

“CNG is not a business for the rich. It is a business for everyone. And the good thing is that this partnership is being done with SMEDAN and Pi-CNG for the benefit of SMEs ,” Danbatta said. (NAN)

President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, charged Nigerians to embrace the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), which he said had come to stay.

Mr Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), said, while addressing State House correspondents, that the President gave the charge at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

“We are well aware that the President set up a Presidential Committee on the CNG to drive the CNG project.

“It is left for us to inform the general public that CNG has come to stay, and we have to follow that route because CNG is safe, cheaper, and protects the environment,” said the Minister.

He said the President also directed that most of the filling stations across the country should be converted to CNG stations with conversion kits to enable people convert their vehicles to CNG.

“It is important to note that when you are using CNG, you save a lot of money, a litre of fuel can go for N1000, but you get CNG at N200 per litre, which saves you N800.

“With the passion of Mr President, the push that he has given to us, we’ll try to drive the CNG programme to reach the nooks and crannies of this country.

“We have to take advantage of the natural resources, gas, that God has endowed us with,” said Ekpo.

The Minister assured that gas was available in large quantity, and the only challenge was infrastructure to deliver the product to filling stations.

He, however, said the President directed that adequate infrastructure should be provided to ensure the delivery of gas to filling stations.

“What we produce in our country is more than enough for us to use for CNG; and of course, you know, we are exporting to so many other countries,” he said.

On the high cost of conversion of cars to CNG, the Minister said it was because the conversion kits were imported.

He said that with more private investors taking advantage of the CNG project, the price would drastically come down eventually.

Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, said the President and members of FEC believed that there was need for further enlightenment of the Nigerian public to know the advantages of using CNG.

“It is not just because it is cheaper, but because it also marks our own transition from fossil fuels to cleaner energy that the world is moving towards,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
