The Federal Government has called for stronger collaboration among developing countries to unlock job creation and ensure global competitiveness through enterprise development.

Mr Charlse Odii, Director-General, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), said this at the inauguration of the D-8 Centre for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Odii described the inauguration as a historic milestone that reflected Nigeria’s growing leadership in promoting South-South cooperation through entrepreneurship and innovation.

He said that the decision to site the centre in Nigeria was a strong endorsement of the resilience and creativity that defined the Nigerian business environment.

“The D-8 SME Center is more than a building. It is a bridge between continents, between policies and real impact, between big ideas and the small businesses that bring them to life.

“The initiative aligns with the vision of President Bola Tinubu, whose renewed hope agenda places enterprise, youth empowerment and regional partnerships at the core of Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic priorities,”he said.

According to him, Nigeria’s SME ecosystem is central to job creation, poverty reduction, and sustainable development.

He said that there was the need for stronger regional integration to tackle common challenges such as access to finance, infrastructure and regulatory barriers.

“No country can do it alone. SMEs in Bangladesh, Egypt, Malaysia, and Nigeria face similar constraints.

“The D-8 SME Center provides a platform to share solutions, open markets and harmonise standards,” he said.

Odii said that SMEDAN’s “Grow Nigerian” strategy was geared toward helping local businesses move beyond survival to becoming competitive players in regional and global value chains.

He said that the agency was focused on digitising SME operations, building industrial linkages, improving business regulations, and enhancing youth participation in the economy.

“This Centre will be a living hub for matchmaking, learning exchanges, policy alignment and co-investment among D-8 countries. It is about turning shared ideas into shared prosperity,” he said.

The Secretary-General of the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation, Ambassador Isiaka Imam, urged member countries to intensify efforts toward empowering SMEs.

Imam said that SMEs formed the backbone of D-8 economies, accounting for the majority of enterprises and contributing significantly to GDP and employment across member states.

Citing country-specific data, he said that SMEs represented 99.8 per cent of businesses in Türkiye, 96 per cent in Nigeria, 98 per cent in Egypt, and over 90 per cent in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Iran.

He said that the D-8 had taken strategic steps to support SME growth, including the establishment of governmental meetings, signing of a cooperation MoU, and hosting of forums among others.8

Imam expressed hope that the new centre would work with national SME agencies to advance research, training, data sharing, and policy harmonisation.

He urged member states to support the centre in addressing challenges such as access to finance, markets and technology.

The inauguration was attended by government officials, representatives of the D-8 Secretariat, diplomatic community, private sector players and development partners.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the representatives of the member states acknowledged the important role SMEs played in the economic development of their various countries.

They, therefore, pledged their collective commitment to the advancement of the D-8 centre to ensure that it realised its purpose.(NAN)

FG strengthening cross-border cooperation with Niger despite exit from ECOWAS – NBC

FG strengthening cross-border cooperation with Niger despite exit from ECOWAS – NBC

The Federal Government says it is strengthening cross border cooperation with Niger Republic in spite of that county’s exit from ECOWAS, along with Mali and Burkina Faso.

Mr Adamu Adaji, the Director-General, National Boundary Commission (NBC), stated this on Friday in Abuja, while assessing the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s administration after two years in office.

Adaji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the NBC was cooperating with Niger authorities to make the international boundaries visible.

He said that the cross-border cooperation was critical because the border communities were affected by boundary delimitation on both sides.

“Governments and politics may be different from the actual people on the ground in terms of boundaries and how they relate with their neighbours.

“We try to encourage that cooperation and they have been cooperating.

“What we’re doing is to make sure that we make the boundary very visible for the people on both sides.

“We have instances where the boundaries straddle some communities, cutting the community into two – part in Nigeria, part in Niger.

“So, we encourage them to cooperate and live peacefully, and they have been living peacefully,” he said.

Adaji explained that geography has brought the people together and they have existed economically, socially, and that cooperation is still existing.

According to him, the cooperation may encourage Niger to consider coming back to the ECOWAS fold, as the regional bloc is making provision to provide facilities to encourage cross-border cooperation.

“I think it will be better, if they are within the ECOWAS fold.

“For now, we’re cooperating in terms of getting the boundary properly defined for the people to understand and know where they are.” he said. (NAN)

Boundaries not barriers but bridges of cooperation – FG

Boundaries not barriers but bridges of cooperation – FG

Abuja, May 30, 2025 (NAN) The National Boundary Commission (NBC) has advised internal and international border communities to see boundaries not as barriers but as bridges of cooperation.

The NBC Director-General, Mr Adamu Adaji, gave the advice on Friday in Abuja, while assessing the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s administration after two years in office.

Adaji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the people of border communities were placed there by geography and have co-existed as neighbours and as friends for a very long time.

He added that the people have shared so many things in terms of culture, history and socio-economic relations.

He, therefore, advised them not to allow the politics or policies of boundaries to bring any bad blood among them and their neighbours or tear them apart.

“That’s why sometimes we try to divorce the traditional boundaries from the administrative boundaries.

“Traditional boundaries may have their extent even beyond the administrative boundaries because of ethnicity and of course, boundaries are not according to ethnicity, they are for administrative purposes.

“The boundary we now have is an administrative boundary, different from what some of them conceive as their traditional boundaries, which in some cases may not be in alignment with the administrative boundaries.

“The administrative boundaries are those that the Federal Government has created for ease of governance and for jurisdictions of the various levels of governance,” he said.

He further appealed to border communities not to be deceived by some elites who may try to create bad blood between them and their neighbours.

According to him, people should look at issues of boundaries from a more humane perspective and see boundaries as bridges and not barriers that will separate them.

“I bleed each time I hear of any crisis that leads to loss of life because of one community fighting another community over boundary disagreement.

“These are lands that we came to meet and we’re going to leave and when people fight over boundary issues, most of them do not even live to see the benefits.

“There is no need to shed blood over boundary skirmishes. People should take note of the fact that they have co-existed for so long and have intermarried and interacted in so many areas,” he said

He identified the activities of some elites, who tried to influence the people’s decision as one of the major challenges of boundary management.

He called on the people to allow the boundary commission interface with them and the appropriate authorities to see how these boundaries could be properly defined. (NAN)

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and Hunan, a landlocked province of southern China, have expressed commitment to strengthen cooperation in urban development, cultural education, tourism, and environment, amongst other areas.

The Minister of State, FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, stated this during a visit of the Hunan delegation to the FCTA in Abuja on Friday.

The delegation was led by Lai Mingyong, the Vice Chairman, of the Hunan Provincial Political Consultative Conference.

Mahmoud stressed that the strategic partnership between FCTA and the Chinese province would ensure expertise, resources, and knowledge sharing.

“This will lead to greater innovation, effective problem-solving, and enhanced capabilities that would be difficult to achieve alone.

“It is important that partnership fosters mutual benefit, strengthens individual and collective efforts, and promotes growth and resilience,” she said.

The minister said that the FCT was transforming President Bola Tinubu.

She added that the partnership with Hanan Province would facilitate more infrastructural development in the capital city of the most populous country in Africa.

The minister commended the Chinese delegation for the warm reception extended to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his delegation during his recent visit to China.

She also said that the partnership would enable the FCT to harness its potential in the areas of tourism, culture, education, and environment.

Earlier, Mingyong, who expressed commitment to strengthening the partnership with FCTA, noted that Abuja, the capital and political-cultural centre of Nigeria was wearing a new look.

He said that the capital city was renowned for its unique urban planning, beautiful architectural style, and well-developed infrastructure.

“This city has grown into a modern metropolis with significant achievements in terms of infrastructural development,” he said.

Mingyong invited the FCT Administration to the China-Africa Economy and Trade Expo, taking place from Nov. 28 to Nov. 30, at the Abuja Trade and Convention centre. (NAN)
