NOGASA calls for intervention in Dangote’s planned product distribution

The Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) has urged the Federal Government to intervene in Dangote Refinery’s move to supply petroleum products directly to consumers and its effect on current distributors.

NOGASA said the move by the refinery to bypass the traditional distribution could disrupt the oil and gas industry, putting thousands of jobs at risk and jeopardising the existing business models of suppliers nationwide.

NOGASA’s President, Benneth Korie, on Thursday in Abuja at its Annual General Meeting, urged the Dangote Refinery to concentrate on refining and selling products to the marketers, who sell to the end users.

Recall that Dangote Refinery recently announced plans to begin direct supply of petroleum products to end users from Aug. 15.

Dangote said that the programme was aimed at eliminating logistics costs, enhancing energy efficiency, promoting sustainability and supporting Nigeria’s economic development.

It said all petrol stations purchasing PMS and diesel from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery would benefit from this enhanced logistics support.

It said that sectors such as manufacturing, telecommunications, and others would benefit from this initiative through reduced fuel costs, lower production costs, reduced inflation, and foster economic growth.

Korie, however, said the recent plan by the refinery to begin direct distribution of products, with the purchase of 4,000 distribution trucks for nationwide supply, had left the marketers worried in the business.

“So today again, we are pleading for President Bola Tinubu to intervene in this matter by telling Dangote to slow down, and go by the rules of the game. Nobody is against the refinery.

“The Dangote Refinery is doing well by refining products, we urge Dangote to concentrate on the refinery and remove hand from this direct distribution, we are capable to distribute products

“All you need to do is to blend enough products and sell to depot owners and other countries and then we buy and distribute to the end users nationwide to sustain the system and avoid scarcity.”

Korie said the association was eager to maintain stability in the industry and would not want reoccurrence of the experience the marketers had with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (Ltd.).

He explained that the NNPC Ltd. was refining petroleum products and distributing through its subsidiary, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) smoothly, but was disrupted immediately it began direct supply to its outlets only.

According to him, as soon as the NNPC Ltd. began concentrating on its retail outlets, the refineries started going down because they are doing a whole lot  including blending, crude sale, and at the same adding filling station to its operations.

He however advised the management of the Dangote refinery to engage the relevant stakeholders in petroleum distribution and marketing constructively and discuss with them towards addressing the issues.

In his remarks, Mr Ugochinyere Ikenga, Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum Resources, Downstream said its goal was to create a situation where everyone would succeed, following the rules set in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

Ikenga, represented by Mr Saba Ahmed, Member, House of Representative said it recognised the inefficiencies in distribution networks, adulteration problem, annoying supply bottlenecks that could lead to shortages, and tough logistical issues of moving products nationwide.

“These aren’t just things we talk about; they are real problems that affect people’s lives and our nation’s economy.

“I want to assure you that the National Assembly is aware of these issues. We are particularly paying attention to Dangote’s recent move into distributing and selling products and how it might affect current distributors.

“This is a big change, and I want to assure you that we are carefully looking into this situation,’’ he said.

Also speaking, Dr Billy Gillis-Harry, the National President, Petroleum Product Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) raised alarm that job loss and business shutdown loomed in view of Dangote’s forward integration strategy of direct product supply.

“With a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, which has now been up to 700,000 barrels, PETROAN simply argues that Dangote refinery should be competing with global refineries, not operating as a distributor in the downstream.

“We, the marketers are more than able to do it, he said,’’ he said.

In his remarks, Gen. Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff urged the association to remain resolute as it discharged its duties of petroleum distribution and marketing smoothly in the country.

Musa, represented by Rear Admiral Jonathan Mamman, Director of Logistics, Defence Headquarters urged the marketers to facilitate expansion of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure and penetration of Liquefied Natural Gas in the country especially in remote places.

Speaking on safety and distribution of products along the coastal areas, he said the armed forces had been doing so much through the Nigerian Navy, which had numerous patrols and coverage of the coastal areas.

“It’s gladdening to say that the International Maritime Bureau in Malaysia and the United Kingdom have delisted Nigeria from one of the countries, red-flagged countries, of piracy and attack on her maritime sectors.

“We have not been having so much security issues, we are open to collaborations, suggestions, and support to the lead agencies protecting the oil and gas infrastructures inland,’’ he said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dangote advocates budget-friendly mass housing for Nigerians

Dangote advocates budget-friendly mass housing for Nigerians

Dangote Cement Plc has urged stakeholders in the housing industry to consider budget-friendly mass housing scheme for Nigerians.

Speaking at the ongoing Africa International Housing Show, the National Sales Director, Dangote Cement Plc, Dolapo Alli, said that all stakeholders must collaborate for affordable housing in the country.

“Addressing housing issues requires collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, private developers, non-profits, and communities.

“The government can adopt public-private partnerships (PPPs) to support mass housing initiatives.

“Through PPP models, the government may initiate the construction of new estates, while companies and firms in the building and construction sector can be granted tax waivers and credits to facilitate the financing of new and affordable housing developments.”

Alli, who was speaking at the company’s Special Day, said mass housing was one of the several strategies used to address the challenge of providing adequate housing for the public.

He added that the approach had helped to tackle the pressures of rapid urbanisation in numerous countries around the world.

He commended the efforts of the Federal Government in implementing mass housing programmes, adding that more gaps need to be covered.

“Nigeria, through the Renewed Hope Housing Initiative, has taken commendable steps toward addressing the critical gap in access to affordable housing finance.

“This initiative signals a strong commitment to making home ownership more accessible for citizens, particularly low- and middle-income earners.

“However, given the scale of the nation’s housing deficit—estimated in the millions—much more needs to be done.

“There is a pressing need for broader collaboration across public and private sectors to unlock innovative financing solutions, streamline regulatory processes, and scale up delivery to meet the growing demand for decent and affordable housing.”

Alli identified several challenges affecting the provision of affordable housing in Nigeria.

Some of the challenges, he said, include: rapid urbanisation, population growth, knowledge gap in housing, high cost of land acquisition, rising cost of construction materials.

Others, he said, include lack of basic infrastructure, inaccurate housing demographics and limited access to long-term and low-cost financing.

He said the continued participation of the company in the Africa International Housing Show stems from the conviction that the gathering has made a meaningful impact by generating ideas and fostering partnerships that contribute to providing shelter for Nigerians.

He urged governments at all levels to implement effective policies and make available lands for mass housing in Nigeria.

Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global health partners to strengthen routine immunisation in Chad.

This is contained in a statement from the Aliko Dangote Foundation and signed by Anthony Chiejina on Tuesday in Abuja.

Chiejina said other partners who sealed agreement are the Gates Foundation, GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the Government of Chad.

He said the MoU would help Chad to strengthen routine immunisation across the country’s 13 provinces over the next three years.

He said was building on an initial agreement signed in 2019 which covered 3 provinces.

Chiejina said the Managing Director/CEO of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Zouera Youssoufou, signed the MoU on behalf of the Foundation.

He added that Youssoufou emphasised the importance of collaboration and sustained investment in health systems to protect every child in Chad.

“This partnership is a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when governments, development partners, and philanthropic organisations unite for a common goal.

”By strengthening routine immunisation and working to eradicate polio, we are giving children in Chad the chance to live healthier, more productive lives,” Youssoufou said.

Chiejina said that the three-year initiative would support Chad to increase routine immunisation coverage, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach areas.

He added that it would mobilise resources and technical expertise to interrupt any remaining transmission of the poliovirus and enhance disease surveillance, health worker training, and vaccine supply chains.

”(It will) to promote community engagement using Community Reorientation Women Network initiative for demand generation for immunisation services and build sustainable local capacity to maintain high immunisation coverage beyond the duration of the MoU.”

The Government of Chad was represented by Prime Minister Allamaye Halina, and the Minister of Public Health, Abdelmadjid Abderahim, among others.

Halina underscored Chad’s commitment to achieving universal immunisation coverage and eliminating preventable childhood diseases.

The CEO of GAVI, Mrs Sania Nishtar, who joined the meeting virtually from Geneva said: “We would like to congratulate the government of Chad for the immense achievement with the previous MoU and the increases that has been recorded in vaccination coverages particularly with the reduction in zero dose children from 45% in 2017 to 16% in 2024.”

President of Global Development of the Gates Foundation, Chris Elias, said the new MoU was a vehicle to achieve the ambitions of the new Chadian 2025-2030 National Immunization Strategy.

Elias said it would set the country on the path to achieving the 80 per cent vaccination coverage target in Penta 3 from the current 67 per cent coverage.

“At the Gates Foundation, we reaffirm our commitment to the government of Chad to help it deliver its National Immunisation Strategy by providing a financing commitment of $3 million USD over the three years which will resource both the MoU implementation and the vaccination coverage survey.(NAN)

In a major boost to commercial agriculture in Nigeria, the Dangote Group and the Niger State Government are fostering sectoral partnership worth billions of Naira.

The conglomerate said significant investment has been deployed into the company’s rice production infrastructure in the state, even as it is partnering the Government on the Niger Food initiative.

The Niger Food initiative is an agricultural development programme launched by the State Government in partnership with private sector players like the Dangote Group.

Senior Special Adviser to the President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Fatima Abdurrahman, said the company’s state-of-the-art rice mill in Wushishi is “progressing steadily and on track for completion.”

Speaking Thursday at the official opening of the 2025 Niger National Trade Fair in Minna, she said: “As part of our commitment to advancing agriculture, we plan to establish one of the largest rice mills here in Niger State.”

Dangote Group is one of the sponsors of the 21st Trade Fair organized by the Niger Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NCCIMA).

Speaking on the theme: Commercial Agriculture as the Major Contributor to Sub National Economic Growth and National GDP, she said: “This initiative is expected to enhance food security and generate significant employment opportunities for the state’s population.

“This landmark project represents a significant step forward in bolstering the food security initiatives of the State. Upon its delivery, the mill is expected to enhance local rice production, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the agricultural development of Nigeria.”

According to her, the 32 Metric Tonnes Per Hour Mill is a cutting-edge facility developed on a 30-hectare site, designed to enhance rice production and storage capacity in the State.

“This state-of-the-art facility incorporates the latest innovations in rice milling technology, ensuring high efficiency, minimal waste, and premium-quality output. Once operational, it will not only boost local rice production but also strengthen the entire agricultural value chain, from farm to market,” she added.

She said the project was expected to generate employment opportunities, support local farmers with necessary inputs like fertilizer and seedlings, and contribute to the State’s food security goals.

“We will source the rice from local out growers and act as 100% off takers of the production at competitive market prices. The Dangote Rice Mill will also feature an on-site captive power generation facility capable of producing 5.8 megawatts of electricity. The project aligns with broader efforts to reduce reliance on the national grid.”

She added that close to Wushishi, the company is constructing 32 silos, each with a storage capacity of 2,500 metric tons of paddy rice.
