The Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) says it is working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police to recover Anchor Borrowers Programme loans from its members.

Its National President, Mr Bello Abubakar, said this at a news conference after a three-day meeting organised by the association in Abuja on Thursday.

The meeting included the association’s state chairmen, zonal coordinators, national officers, and other stakeholders in the maize value chain, such as researchers, input suppliers, farmers, and end users.

The MAAN boss said the purpose of the press briefing was to inform the general public about the efforts being made to recover the Anchor Borrowers Programme loans given to the association from 2018 to 2021 for maize production.

“MAAN understands that the ABP/CBN programme is a revolving loan due for full recovery, depending on the participants (farmers) for compliance.

“Unfortunately, there was a monumental disappointment, as most of the participants/farmers thought that the loan was a national cake,” Abubakar said.

He added that due to the recalcitrant attitude of the participants/farmers towards repayment of the loan, MAAN was constrained to write several demand letters to the defaulters, as well as to seek synergy with law enforcement and anti-graft agencies like the EFCC, DSS, and the Nigeria Police for assistance, in line with Federal Government policies on loan recovery.

“It is most unfortunate that some of the participants/defaulters, who tried to evade responsibility to both MAAN and the agencies supporting our loan recovery, took us to various courts for enforcement of their purported human rights, which they claimed were violated.”

The MAAN president said the association took some of the defaulters to court for loan recovery, and most of those cases are still pending in the courts.

He noted that insecurity is grossly affecting association members, saying, “Some of our farms and farmers were burnt, kidnapped, and killed by bandits on farms in Niger, Zamfara, Katsina, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Ondo, and Ekiti states.”

According to him, flooding has also affected farmers in Kogi, Benue, Cross River, Jigawa, Katsina, Taraba, Niger, Kebbi, and Kwara states, with drought threatening members in Oyo, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Ekiti, and Benue states.

Abubakar urged the Federal Government to create an enabling environment that would give smallholder farmers the opportunity to settle their outstanding loans and produce for domestic needs and exports.

He said the government should show compassion to farmers in consideration of the unmitigated and debilitating factors making productive farming and harvesting impossible.

The MAAN boss appealed to the government to either waive or significantly reduce the outstanding financial obligations of the association in the CBN/ABP programme.

He commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its efforts in ensuring food security in the country.

The Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Adeola Ajayi, has called on Alumni of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) to move beyond ceremonial affiliations and take up strategic roles in shaping national and continental security policies.

Ajayi, who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs Folashade Adekayaoja, made the call at the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Alumni Association of NISS (AANISS), on Saturday in Abuja.

He said the evolving nature of Nigeria’s security threats demanded a more proactive and integrated response from security professionals across Africa.

He noted that the theme of the event, “Enhancing Alumni Impacts on National and Continental Security,” reflected the urgency of the time, especially with increasing cross-border threats such as terrorism, insurgency, cyber-insecurity, organized crime, and political instability.

“This meeting is not just a reunion, but a policy dialogue, a reflection on relevance, and a call to action,” the DG said.

Ajayi emphasised the strategic position of AANISS in shaping security discourse through advocacy, inter-agency cooperation, and operational leadership.

Ajayi proposed five key areas where the alumni body could enhance its impact: policy advocacy, institutional partnership, capacity building, professionalism in the security sector, and continental engagement.

“Your collective experience is a national asset.

“You must become a network of strategic influence and a reservoir of policy insight, technical competence, and operational experience,” he added.

The DSS boss urged the alumni to become more involved in mentoring, strengthening institutions, and participating in Africa’s peace and security architecture through research, training, and field collaboration.

He urged the alumni to see themselves as agents of policy innovation and national service, stating that Africa’s security future may hinge on their collective contributions.

The Chairman, Board of Trustee of AANISS, Mary Otubu, called on alumni to strengthen internal cohesion and leverage their strategic networks in advancing national security objectives.

Otubu, represented by Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Salisu, a member, Board of Trustees and Fellow of NISS, said the renewed collaboration between the BoT and the Executive Committee signaled a promising future for the body and its contributions to national development.

According to her, the AGM comes at a time when the relationship between the BoT and the Exco has been re-energised, with prospects for more impactful engagement.

Otubu reaffirmed the BoT’s commitment to upholding the values and mission of the Association, describing the alumni as a “collective repository of national security knowledge and capacity.

“As custodians of the Association’s assets, the BoT will work with the Exco towards the establishment of a permanent Secretariat as land has already been secured at a prime location in the city for that purpose,” she said.

Otubu also called on fellows to remain socially connected and use their networks to enhance the visibility and influence of the Association across the intelligence and security architecture, including engagements with the DSS, the National Security Adviser, and other stakeholders.

According to her, security is the most important guarantee for peace and development, urging members to channel their professional expertise toward practical solutions to Nigeria’s recurring security challenges.

The President of AANISS, Mr Mike Ejiofor, called on members to use their professional influence and platforms to enhance the visibility and impact of the association.

Ejiofor appreciated members for their continued commitment to the association, stating that their presence demonstrated loyalty and dedication to the body’s collective aspirations.

He emphasised the importance of financial contributions particularly the regular payment of annual dues which he described as the “lifeblood” of the association’s operations and growth.

He urged members to be proactive in supporting AANISS both financially and morally and to leverage their positions in government, business, and academia to attract opportunities and forge meaningful partnerships for the association.

“This is a clarion call for us to proudly wear our alumni identity and bring the name of AANISS into rooms where opportunities are being discussed,” Ejiofor said.

He expressed optimism that the meeting would foster fruitful deliberations and inspire renewed commitment toward the association’s long-term goals. (NAN)

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for its professional handling of the security situation in Plateau, Benue, and other states.

The National President of MACBAN, Alhaji Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, expressed the association’s commendation in a statement released on Friday in Abuja.

He noted that the DSS had managed the security challenges in the mentioned states with utmost professionalism, deserving of recognition.

Othman-Ngelzarma also lauded President Bola Tinubu for appointing Mr Tosin Ajayi as the Director-General of the DSS, describing it as one of the best decisions of his administration.

He urged other security agencies to learn from the way the new DSS leadership had approached securing lives and property.

The MACBAN President highlighted the efforts of the DSS to investigate the root causes of the problems affecting the states.

“We salute the professionalism with which the DSS has been handling the delicate security challenges in Plateau, Benue, and several other states,” he said.

He also noted that the DSS, under Ajayi’s leadership, had successfully distinguished between law-abiding Fulani herdsmen and criminals.

Othman-Ngelzarma further alleged that more than 20 per cent of MACBAN members and four million heads of cattle have been forced to flee Nigeria due to insecurity, with many families displaced.

He pointed out that the exodus of herders had driven up the cost of beef, which had traditionally been the cheapest source of meat in Nigeria.

He reiterated the association’s readiness to cooperate with both the Federal and State Governments to support security agencies in restoring peace, thereby ensuring the smooth functioning of business and economic activities.

He also thanked President Tinubu for fulfilling one of his campaign promises with the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.

According to him, the ministry will significantly improve Nigeria’s livestock industry.(NAN)(www.nannews,ng)
