The School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) in Jigawa have commended the European Union (EU) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for their implementation of the school enrolment campaign in the state.

Mr Ja’afar Danbaba, SBMC Chairman of Jahun Local Government Council, made the remarks on Monday in Dutse.

He described the intervention, which aims to improve school enrolment in seven pilot local government areas, as “commendable and timely.”

He added that the campaign included a town hall meeting to mobilise stakeholders and promote understanding of their individual and collective roles in increasing school enrolment.

Ahmad Ciroma, SBMC Chairman of Birnin Kudu LGC, called for the campaign’s sustainability to enhance enrolment and retention in schools.

“If such campaigns are constant and frequent, they will keep us aware of our collective roles, enabling us to solve multiple issues affecting our education system.

“Jigawa indeed needs regular campaigns to engage the community in issues requiring prolonged intervention, especially those involving behavioural change.

“As parents, we appeal to the state government and partners to continue these campaigns even after the EU and UNICEF intervention ends.” He said.

Aminu Hassan and Ali Babale, SBMC Chairmen of Hadejia and Kafin Hausa respectively, praised the inclusion of mothers in the campaign.

“Initially, women were excluded from educational discussions in our communities, but with their inclusion, positive changes are becoming visible,” Hassan stated.

Babale described the campaign as an excellent strategy to raise awareness about improving school enrolment in the state.

While stressing the need for sustainability, he also urged for the campaign’s expansion to all local government areas to boost enrolment statewide.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EU and UNICEF officially launched the school enrolment campaign on Monday in collaboration with the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Teachers’ enrolment in NTI rising – Director

Teachers’ enrolment in NTI rising – Director

By Moses Kolo

Prof. Sadiya Sani-Daura, Director/Chief Executive of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna, says the recent innovations at the institute accounted for the rising enrollment of teachers.

Sani-Daura said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the institute’s headquarters in Kaduna.

She recalled that before her assumption of office in November 2024, the institute’s moribund server of about 40 years had collapsed.

“When I came in, our exams processing server was grounded and because of that, for about three semesters, results had not been released and this caused agitations by beneficiaries some of who took us to court.

“The server was about 40 years old, so naturally it has seen better days so it failed but thank God we have now replaced it with a cloud-based server.

“We revived it and migrated the data in it so that we have now retrieved the information in it and it is now being processed and settled all the grievances as well as court cases now history.

“The earlier problem led to the declining of our students enrollment but now it is rising as we have also released a bag log of certificates.

“Hopefully, we are making a comeback in a very strategic way and assuming our position, playing the critical role expected from us as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” she said.

Sani-Daura said the feat helped to end delays in the issuance of certificates to qualified teachers in the country.

She said upon her assumption, the institute had among other achievements, installed solar systems at the Directorate and Liaison Office in Abuja as the first phase of its solar installation.

“In NTI, with the critical need for constant power supply, we needed a backup because of the challenge of energy.

“Also is the realigning roles and responsibilities through the restructuring of the institute’s organogram which had to be a little bit modified so that it is all set transparency and accountability.

“We equally inaugurated a standing committee for quality service delivery, among others.”(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

FCT enrols 198,810 residents in health insurance scheme

FCT enrols 198,810 residents in health insurance scheme

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has enroled 198,810 residents of the territory into its Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) in one year.

Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Olayinka added that out of the figure, 10,065 vulnerable persons, including pregnant women were enroled to access free medical services under the FHIS.

He said that the FHIS had recorded significant increase in its enrolment since the inception of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike-led FCTA, with more than 100 per cent annual enrolment target of 25,000 beneficiaries.

He explained that the move was part of the FCTA’s resolve to end maternal and infant mortality resulting from avoidable and preventable causes.

He said that the enrolment allowed the beneficiaries to access free healthcare services in Primary Health Care (PHC) centres and all services covered in the Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS).

The spokesman identified some of the services as primary preventive care, screening, and primary emergency services.

Others, he said, include secondary level care such as dental, mental, eye, ear, nose and throat care, physiotherapy, surgeries, laboratory investigations, and radiological investigations such as ultrasound scan, and x-rays.

Olayinka urged residents to register for the FHIS, adding that free registration for vulnerable persons, including pregnant women, which commenced in February was ongoing.

“All pregnant women who enrolled through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) Primary Health Care (PHC) centres across the six area councils in the FCT will continue to enjoy free health education, medical consultation and treatment, routine antenatal drugs, laboratory investigations and delivery.

“Referral for secondary care, including caesarean section, blood transfusion, and treatment of other obstetric complications such as eclampsia at all the 14 General Hospitals in the FCT is also provided at no cost to the patient through the BHCPF,” he said.

He quoted Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, FCTA, as saying “the FCTA under Wike had intensified efforts to combat maternal and infant mortality”.

He added that Fasawe, who spoke at an event in Gwarinpa District Hospital, orgainsed to commemorate the 2025 World Health Day, described the FHIS intervention as critical to ending maternal deaths.

“A key intervention is the approval of free health insurance coverage for all pregnant women residing in the FCT and ensuring that all childbirth-related expenses, including vaginal and cesarean deliveries, are fully covered at no cost.

“The initiative formed part of activities marking this year’s World Health Day, under the Renewed Hope Initiative, which maintains a zero-tolerance to maternal and infant mortality.

“In alignment with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, several hospitals in the FCT, including Gwarinpa, Nyanya, Abaji, and Kuje General Hospitals, have been designated as Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEONC) centers.

“These facilities will also offer cesarean sections free of charge,” Fasawe had said. (NAN)
