Governors meet over tax reform, others

The 36 state governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), are meeting in Abuja to discuss tax reform and other national issues.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting is chaired by the forum’s chairman, Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara.

Governors from Oyo, Anambra, Bauchi, Jigawa, Lagos, Ogun, Abia, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom are in attendance.

Also present are the deputy governors of Kaduna and Zamfara.

Speakers of State Houses of Assembly are also attending the meeting.

At its Jan. 17 meeting with the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms, the NGF endorsed a revised Value Added Tax (VAT) sharing formula.

The proposed formula allocates 50 per cent based on equality, 30 per cent on derivation, and 20 per cent on population.

On Wednesday, the Federal Government inaugurated 50 newly appointed Tax Appeal Commissioners to strengthen economic reforms and revenue generation.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, underscored the commissioners’ vital role in enhancing revenue collection.

He highlighted the importance of the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT) in ensuring fair tax dispute resolution, fostering investment, and promoting a business-friendly environment. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Northern governors mourn elder statesman, Edwin Clark

The Northern State Governors’ Forum has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of elder statesman and Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark.

Clark died on Monday after a brief illness.

Chairman of the forum, made up of 19 State Governors, and Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya expressed the forum’s sympathy in a condolence message issued to journalists by Mr Ismaila Uba-Misilli, the Director-General, Press Affairs, Gombe Government House.

Yahaya described the former Federal Commissioner for Information as an upright and relentless advocate of fairness.

He said Clark’s contributions to governance, democracy, and national discourse earned him admiration and respect.

The governor extended his heartfelt condolences to the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family, the government and people of Delta, the South-South region, and Nigeria as a whole.

“Chief Edwin Clark was an advocate for the rights of the downtrodden and a steadfast voice for the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.

“His commitment to justice and good governance distinguished him as a statesman of great repute.

“His demise is a profound loss, not just to the South-South but to the entire country,” he said.

He prayed to the Almighty to grant his family, loved ones, the people of the South-South and Nigeria the strength to bear “this huge loss.” (NAN)

Progressive Governors to back Tax Reform bills

The Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, has announced that the Forum will collaborate closely with the National Assembly to strengthen engagement on the proposed Tax Reform Bills.

Uzodimma disclosed this while addressing journalists after a closed-door meeting with progressive governors in Abuja on Wednesday.

He reiterated the Forum’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s reform initiatives, particularly the proposed Tax Reform Bills, which aim to improve Nigeria’s taxation system and administration.

The bills under consideration include the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

Addressing security concerns in parts of the North-West, Uzodimma noted that security agencies are actively tackling the situation and assured the Forum’s continued support to enhance national safety.

He added that the governors discussed key national issues, including measures to back the Federal Government’s reforms and create additional palliative programmes to mitigate their effects on citizens.

Uzodimma stressed the importance of unity among the governors to support President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in driving national prosperity. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
