ACCI empowers 15 youths with ICT, vocational skills

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has trained 15 youths in Information Communication Technology (ICT), administrative management, and other vocational skills.

President of ACCI, Chief Emeka Obegolu, stated this during the 2nd graduation ceremony for the one-year competency-based training in Abuja.

Represented by his 1st Deputy President, Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, the ACCI boss said that the goal was to equip the youths with the needed skills to excel in their respective fields.

He stated that the trainees had participated in both the Office Administration (OA) and Technical Facility Operations and Maintenance (TFOM) Competency-Based Dual Vocational Training Programmes.

Obegolu emphasised that the event marked the culmination of months of dedication, perseverance, and hard work, with students completing rigorous and industry-focused training programmes.

“This training is the second phase of our competency-based programmes and serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, self-reliance, and commitment to excellence in vocational training,” Obegolu said.

He added that the goal of these programmess was to equip participants with the essential skills required to excel in their respective fields.

“These programmes go beyond traditional learning. They immerse trainees in real-world scenarios, ensuring they gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience,” he explained.

He further noted that the Office Administration programme followed the Dual Vocational Training (DVT) model, integrating workplace experience with academic instruction, leading to a level four certification under the National Skills Qualification Framework.

Obegolu also mentioned that the programmes were approved by the Federal Government through the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

He added that since 2021, the programmes have trained individuals in key areas such as workplace organisation, business communication, information technology, administrative management, and financial and legal support functions.

He described the TFOM programme, which focuses on technical facility management, highlighting its importance in equipping trainees with competencies across 12 critical learning fields, including safe working practices, environmental protection measures, electrical installation, and building security.

“The programme’s methodology, which combines one month of classroom instruction with three months of practical field training, ensures that graduates are highly employable,” Obegolu said.

He also lauded the graduates for developing essential soft skills, such as problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability, and professionalism.

“These attributes will serve them well in their careers and contribute positively to their organisations and society,” he added.

Obegolu expressed his gratitude to GIZ and other stakeholders for their unwavering support in ensuring the successful execution of the training

He encouraged the graduates to embrace future opportunities with confidence and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Mrs Britta Erckelens, Programme Manager at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), praised the graduates for establishing a solid foundation of excellence.

She urged them to develop their skills and contribute to their respective industries to drive economic growth in Nigeria.

She also lauded the collaboration between GIZ and ACCI, which had enhanced the capacity of the ACC-IBEST Centre to deliver high-quality, market-relevant training programmes.

Mrs Phoebe Ocheche, Head of Training at the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), advised the graduates to remain focused and share their experiences with others.

She thanked GIZ and ACCI for their efforts in making the training a success.

On behalf of the graduates, Mr Mamza Chakiram from the Industrial Arbitration Panel thanked ACCI, GIZ, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the training.

He said that the experience had exposed them to various technology programmes.(NAN)

Glovo, LASG, She Code Africa unveil initiative for tech women

Glovo, a pioneering multi-category app, has unveiled its Women in Tech Bootcamp with the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and investment and She Code Africa to promote technology infusion for women.

Mrs Lamide Akinola, the General Manager, Glovo Nigeria, at the launch on Friday in Lagos, said the bootcamp was to empower the next generation of female leaders in technology.

Akinola said the initiative not only aimed to foster technology inclusion but to also provide skills training, and empower women to build successful careers in technology.

Akinola said the event which brought together industry leaders, government officials, European diplomatic community reinforced Glovo’s commitment to bridging the gender gap in the tech industry.

She added that it would advance gender diversity, create pathways for women to thrive in tech-driven roles and make a lasting impact in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.

“At Glovo, we believe in a future where women are integral drivers of innovation, especially in technology.

“We recognise that the challenges women face in technology go beyond technical skills; they include barriers rooted in access, opportunity, and sometimes, the confidence to take bold steps.

“Today’s event is our way of saying we see those barriers, and we are here to help break them down with you.

“At Glovo, we believe that empowering women with digital skills is essential, not only for driving innovation and growth but for building communities where everyone can thrive,” she said.

Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Commissioner, Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Lagos State, underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in unlocking opportunities for women.

Ambrose-Medebem quoted that studies showed that bridging the gender gap in technology could add up to $12 trillion to global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2025.

She said the figure showed that empowering women in technology was not just a moral imperative but an economic necessity.

She said Lagos State, a hub of innovation and economic activity, understood that inclusion was a catalyst for sustainable growth.

“However, achieving this requires intentional strategies and robust partnerships.

“Today’s gathering signifies more than just advocacy; it is a rallying cry to reimagine the future of innovation by ensuring no one is left behind, particularly women, who represent half of our population.

“We are excited to work with Glovo and She Code Africa to deliver a program that opens doors for women to excel, innovate, and lead.

“This initiative also aligns with the mandate of the ministry to foster innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, and support the development of skilled talent across industries,” she said.

Ada Oyom, Founder, She Code Africa, said her organisation as the technical partners of the Women in Tech Bootcamp Programme, was very enthusiasm about the outcome of the partnership.

Oyom said the collaboration with Glovo and the Lagos State Government to run the 12-week intensive programme would create impactful pathways for women in tech.

She noted that Glovo’s commitment to gender diversity was commendable, and urged like-minded companies to invest in initiatives that empower the future of women in technology.

“Together, we can build a more inclusive and innovative tech ecosystem,” she said.

Also, Shiro Theuri, Glovo’s Chief Technology Officer, restated the brand’s steadfast commitment to diversity in technology, saying its possibilities and impact of fostering inclusive environments was enormous.

She said the company’s dedication to “walking the talk” was evident in its strategic efforts to create opportunities for women across its operations, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

She said the initiative aimed to ignite interest in technology careers by highlighting the flexibility, creativity, and impact of a modern technology environment.

“To achieve this, Glovo focuses on three pillars: facilitating bootcamps for women without technical backgrounds to prepare them for junior tech roles.

“The second pillar is breaking gender stereotypes through community engagement, such as office visits that inspire young girls with female role models; and acting as a career catalyst by offering internships to top bootcamp participants.

“This initiative also ensures that, even after completing the bootcamp, participants will have ongoing access to mentorship, supporting their journey toward careers in technology.

NAN to deploy modern ICT tools for quality service delivery – Ali

Malam Ali M. Ali, the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), says the agency will deploy modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools to enhance quality service delivery.

He stated this on Thursday during an assessment tour to the Bauchi Zonal office of the agency.

According to Ali, the agency needs to scale up by employing modern techniques to satisfy the needs of its subscribers.

He reiterated commitment of the management to reposition the agency through viable infrastructure development for effective service delivery.

Ali, who acknowledged the dedication and resilience of the editorial staff in the Bauchi zone in discharging their duties, announced plans to reopen district offices in Bauchi and Gombe, to boost grassroots reportage.

“The dawn of the digital era, Artificial Intelligence, these are challenges we have to contend with and already the management are thinking ahead of time.

“The Bauchi Zonal office is not doing badly but it could do better, and doing better means greater editorial direction and managerial support from Abuja.

“One of the reasons why we are doing this assessment tour is to see and assess on a firsthand basis the extent of the challenges, the gaps of operational facilities, working tools and general infrastructure,” he said.

He said the agency would conduct training for its staff to enable them to get acquainted and exposed to modern reporting skills.

Ali said the agency would utilise renewable energy to improve power supply to its offices and encourage productivity.

The NAN helmsman tasked marketing personnel to double their efforts toward ensuring that more clients subscribe to its services and boost revenue base.

While urging personnel to show greater commitment to service, Ali encouraged team building among the staff for proper coordination.

Also, Mr Ephraims Sheyin, the Editor-in-Chief of the agency, charged reporters to prioritise court, commercial and human angle reportage at the grassroots.

Sheyin enjoined reporters to do everything possible within their reach to give NAN an edge to stand out.

Earlier, Mr Rabiu Sani-Ali, the Manager, Bauchi Zonal Office, sought for deployment of modern working gadgets to aid news reporting.

He also called for engagement of additional workers to serve as gardeners, cleaners and security guards in the office. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
