GOALPrime Organisation Nigeria, an NGO, has enrolled 6,588 out-of-school children into informal learning centres in Musawa Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State.

The Country Director of the NGO, Prof. Christopher Chinedumuije, said this during the distribution of learning materials to the children.

He said the project was funded by the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) initiative and implemented in partnership with Save the Children International (SCI) and the Katsina State Government.

The one-year project, which began in Oct. 2024, also covered selected local government areas in Zamfara and Kaduna States.

He said the project aimed to transition children into formal schooling after three months of informal education.

Chinedumuije noted that the project included psychosocial support, hygiene kits for the children, and distribution of instructional materials to teachers.

“Learning materials will also be provided to around 7,000 pupils in selected formal schools.

“We identified 15,371 learners in formal schools and selected 12 schools for intervention.

“We’ve also set up 32 alternative learning centres and established child-friendly spaces for adolescents.

“Other interventions include the creation of a Community-Based Child Protection Committee (CBCPC), two Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) committees, and positive parenting classes to strengthen family support systems,” he said.

He emphasised the project’s goal was to support children affected by insecurity or flooding, ensuring their continued access to education.

The Sarkin Musawa, Alhaji Sagir Abdullahi-Inde, represented by his secretary, Malam Safyanu Mani, commended the NGO for the initiative and pledged the community’s full support.

Also speaking, the Education Secretary of Musawa LGA, Malam Yahaya Shu’aibu, urged parents and children to make good use of the materials provided.

He noted the initiative would help bridge the education gap and contribute to reducing security challenges in the region. (NAN)

Pastor Olajumoke Raji, Head Teacher of Pesach International Academy, Kubwa, Abuja, has called for urgent and coordinated efforts to address the growing issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Raji made the call during the school’s 2025 Nursery Graduation and Prize-Giving Ceremony, held on Saturday at the school’s premises.

Reflecting on the school’s progress since its establishment in 2018, Raji stated that the academy had successfully graduated two sets of pupils from its Nursery section and was working toward expanding its Primary education offering.

“Although we have not yet graduated students from Grade Six, this marks our second graduation from Nursery Two into the primary section.

“It’s a moment of joy to see our second set move forward,” she said.

Raji attributed the rising number of out-of-school children to several factors, including financial hardship and lack of awareness among parents about the value of education.

“Some parents simply don’t realise the long-term benefits of education, often because they themselves never had the opportunity to be educated,” she said.

She emphasised that education was a powerful tool that can transform lives and uplift communities.

She said, “Education is the key—it is life itself. When you give a child education, you give them a future. Without it, many children will struggle to become anything in life.”

Raji also highlighted that the academy was a non-profit institution operated with the support of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement, Church, Daki-biyu District (Peculiar People) Kubwa, Abuja.

“Our tuition is free for children of church members, and there’s a 50 per cent subsidy for non-members.

“The aim is to ensure that no child is left behind due to lack of funds,” she said.

Raji also commended the school’s board members for their continued support.

Also speaking at the event, a member of the board, Prophet Ejalonibu Lawrence, stated that financial barriers remained a major challenge for many families.

“This problem is not unique to Nigeria. All over the world, many poor families cannot afford to send their children to school.

“That’s why our board has made it a priority to subsidise tuition and provide nearly free education to all.

“Children are the future—we must invest in them now,” he said.

Mrs Faith Olakunle, a teacher and the school’s Welfare Officer, expressed gratitude for the successful end of another academic session and commended her colleagues for their dedication.

She said, “Teaching is a demanding job, especially without adequate teaching materials.

“But when you have passion, the drive keeps you going. I believe the reward for teachers starts here, not just in heaven. Intentional teaching always yields results.”

Representing the parents of the graduating pupils, Mrs Salome Sarki described the event as a collective achievement and expressed appreciation to the school management.

“The success of today’s event is a win for all of us.

“We are especially thankful to the school for making education accessible by keeping tuition costs low,” she said. (NAN)

An NGO, IA-Foundation, has raised N30 million at its recent Annual Charity Gala in London to support the education of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

IA-Foundation’s founder, Mrs Ibironke Adeagbo, said in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the fund would be deployed to directly support the body’s key initiatives.

These, she said, included the “Sponsor a Child” programme, bursary scholarships and the provision of school materials and uniforms to children across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

” These efforts aim to remove financial barriers to education, particularly for marginalised groups such as girls, children with disabilities and those from low-income families.

” By addressing both access and equity, IA-Foundation continues to work toward its vision of ensuring that every child has the opportunity to receive quality education,” she said.

She thanked the foundation’s patron and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Femi Falana, for his advocacy that had helped to reduce out of school children.

Adeagbo also thanked Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, for her support to the foundation.

She further expressed her gratitude to guests for their generosity and commitment to the cause of the foundation.

According to her, the foundation remains committed to reducing the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria by providing scholarships, school supplies, and essential support services.

She also commended President Bola Tinubu for his political will and the new Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, for his commitment to reducing out-of-school children in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the foundation, Mr Diran Femi-Famakinwa, described the incidence of out-of-school children as not just a moral crisis.

According to him, when children are not educated, they are more likely to remain in poverty and perpetuating cycles of poverty.

Dignitaries present at the event included the representative of the Nigerian Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Amb. Mercy Haruna- Adeoye.

Also present was the Mayor of London Borough of Southwark, Naima Ali, as well as the Deputy Mayor of the borough and Mayor-Elect Councillor Sunny Lambe.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
