TICAD9: Nigeria focused on strategic engagements, not trade expo —- Presidency

‎By Muhyideen Jimoh

‎The Presidency has said Nigeria’s delegation to the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) is focused on strategic engagements, not a trade exhibition.

In a statement on Wednesday, Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, said President Bola Tinubu’s delegation is pursuing results in key sectors such as power, industry, and agriculture.

The clarification follows social media reports showing an empty booth labelled “Nigeria” at the TICAD9 venue in Yokohama, Japan.

Onanuga described the viral narrative as a misrepresentation of Nigeria’s mission at the triennial conference, stressing that the country is not participating as a trade exhibitor.

He noted that while the reports may reflect patriotic concern, they reveal ignorance about Nigeria’s actual objectives at TICAD9.

According to him, Nigeria’s participation is centred on forging bilateral and multilateral partnerships that will support economic growth and development.

Onanuga revealed that the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) will host a targeted investment forum at the conference on Thursday.

He added that ministers are holding bilateral meetings, while President Tinubu will meet executives from Toyota, CFAO, UN-Habitat, UNDP, and the International Finance Corporation.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is leading talks on several projects backed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), including power transmission improvements in Lagos and Ogun states.

Other projects include a partnership between the National Power Training Institute (NAPTIN) and JICA on vocational training, and a $190 million renewable energy access initiative.

Adelabu is also scheduled to meet with leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), such as TOSHIBA and HITACHI, on possible collaborations in the power sector.

Onanuga further disclosed that the Bank of Industry, led by Dr Supo Olusi, is engaged in high-level talks with JICA and other multilateral financial institutions.

He affirmed that Nigeria is well represented at TICAD9 and actively involved in all critical diplomatic and investment negotiations. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Presidency slams ADC over criticism of Buhari’s state burial

Presidency slams ADC over criticism of Buhari’s state burial

By Muhyideen Jimoh

The Presidency has rebuked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for its criticism of the state burial accorded former President Muhammadu Buhari.

‎In a strongly worded statement issued in Abuja, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, described ADC’s criticism as “opportunistic, dishonest and politically desperate.”

‎“The latest outburst from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) regarding former President Buhari’s state burial is nothing but an opportunistic exercise in manufactured outrage.

‎“It’s a laughable tantrum by a poorly amalgamated political contraption desperately clutching at straws for relevance it will never attain.

‎“This is not the first time the ADC, in its pitiful, stuttering attempts at reinvention, has embarrassed itself with hollow, attention-seeking criticisms and press releases,” Dare said.

‎The ADC had accused the Tinubu administration of politicising Buhari’s death, a claim the presidency strongly rejected.

‎It argued that the ADC, not the government, was the one seeking political mileage from Buhari’s passing.

‎“Let it be said clearly: the ADC is the one exploiting Buhari’s death for political attention, not this government.

“They have chosen to dance on his grave for relevance.

‎“From Atiku and El-Rufai’s choreographed arrival in Daura, greeted with chants seeking to make political capital from the solemnity of the moment, to this disgraceful press statement, the ADC has shown itself to be utterly shameless.

‎“For clarity, President Tinubu’s administration is neither desperate nor searching for cheap popularity,” Dare said.

He emphasised that Buhari’s burial was dignified, honourable, and drew both national and global attention.

‎“World leaders showed up, millions tuned in, and even ADC promoters pranced around Daura like eager real estate agents,” Dare added.

‎He also highlighted key achievements under President Tinubu, including economic recovery and infrastructure development.

‎Major milestones listed included stabilised currency, increased oil output, and revitalised state finances through improved FAAC allocations.

‎The rollout of the student loan scheme was also cited as a sign of reform-focused governance.

He added: ‎“These are not press statements. These are results. Tangible, measurable, and ongoing.

“That is leadership. What does the ADC offer Nigerians beyond sanctimonious whining?”

‎He questioned the ADC’s relevance, describing it as a party riddled with internal crises and legal confusion.

‎Dare reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, refusing to dignify what he called “political scavengers.”

‎He urged Nigerians to ignore what he called the noise from a party “gasping for attention.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu’s Saint Lucia visit ‘ll boost ties with Caribbean nations — Presidency

Tinubu’s Saint Lucia visit ‘ll boost ties with Caribbean nations — Presidency

‎By Muhyideen Jimoh
‎The Presidency, says President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Saint Lucia is a strategic engagement that will deepen educational and cultural cooperation with not just the island nation, but the Caribbean.
‎This is contained in a statement  by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday.
‎Onanuga said the visit will rekindle Nigeria’s ancestral and strategic economic ties with the Caribbean nation and the wider CARICOM bloc.
‎“In the wake of some Nigerians’ misguided, mischievous, and uninformed comments regarding President  Tinubu’s historic state visit to Saint Lucia, it is necessary to clarify the purpose.
‎“First, from the perspective of the Government of Saint Lucia, the visit by the Nigerian leader paves the way for  rekindling of  ancestral bonds, igniting a new era of diplomatic, cultural, and economic possibilities between our nations,” Onanuga stated.
‎He stated that  the President’s historic visit aligned with Nigeria’s “Four D’s” foreign policy: Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography—key pillars of  the country’s global engagement.
‎Onanuga  noted that Saint Lucia, with deep African roots and a significant Nigerian-descended population, views the visit as a homecoming of sorts.
‎It would be recalled that in the 19th century, Nigerian immigrants brought enduring cultural and religious traditions to the island, a legacy still felt today.
‎Onanuga said  the visit underscored Nigeria’s rising soft power, driven by Afrobeats, Nollywood, and a literary heritage that resonated across the Caribbean.
‎He noted that Saint Lucia, home to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), is a gateway to the 15-member CARICOM bloc with a 130 billion dollars GDP.
‎He said that President Tinubu’s presence signalled Nigeria’s interest in expanding South-South trade and strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with the Caribbean.
‎”Nigeria and Saint Lucia already share remarkable historical links, such as Sir Darnley Alexander, a Saint Lucian, who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from
‎1975 to 1979,” he stated.
‎The presidency also highlighted  contributions of other Saint Lucians, including Neville Skeete, who helped design the Central Bank of Nigeria headquarters, and Sir Darnley’s son Michael, a frontline medical officer during the Nigerian civil war.
‎Onanuga said that Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps, part of Tinubu’s delegation, will support development efforts by deploying professionals to key sectors in Saint Lucia.
‎The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls  that Saint Lucia, which gained independence in 1979, had hosted fewer than 10 official state visits.
‎The last African leader to visit was President Nelson Mandela, who attended the 1998 CARICOM Heads of Government Summit.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Akume remains SGF—- Presidency

Akume remains SGF—- Presidency

By Muhyideen Jimoh

The Presidency has dismissed reports claiming that Sen. George Akume has been replaced as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

This is contained in a statement issued by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga described the report in a section of the media as “fabricated and misleading”.

‎The presidential spokesperson said that ‎President Tinubu, who is currently on an official visit to Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointment.

“There has been no change in the status of His Excellency, Sen. George Akume, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

“The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue. Agents of mischief fabricated it.

“The Presidency advises Nigerians to disregard the fake news,” Onanuga said.

There have been speculations that Akume had stepped down as SGF to become the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). (NAN)‎(www.nannews.ng)

Presidency debunks Lamido’s June 12 claims

Presidency debunks Lamido’s June 12 claims

By Muhyideen Jimoh

The Presidency has strongly denied claims made by former Jigawa Governor, Sule Lamido, about President Bola Tinubu’s role in the annulled June 12, 1993 election.

In a statement titled ‘Setting the Record Straight’, Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, dismissed Lamido’s comments as false, revisionist, and historically dishonest.

Lamido had claimed during a television interview that Tinubu supported the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

“Alhaji Lamido’s claims represent a distortion of history and a regrettable attempt at revisionism,” Onanuga said.

Lamido alleged that Tinubu only gained prominence after NADECO was formed and claimed Tinubu’s mother backed the annulment.

The former Jigawa governor also claimed Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, Tinubu’s mother, mobilised market women to support the annulment of the election.

“These allegations are patently false,” Onanuga stated.

Onanuga insisted that Alhaja Mogaji never mobilised market women in support of the annulment.

“Had she done so, she would have lost her position as market leader in Lagos,” he added.

Onanuga acknowledged her relationship with Babangida but said it existed before the annulment crisis.

The Presidential aide accused Lamido of failing to defend MKO Abiola’s mandate as SDP National Secretary.

“Lamido, as SDP Secretary, failed to oppose the military’s injustice after Abiola’s election victory,” he said.

“The SDP leadership, including Lamido and Tony Anenih, shamefully surrendered the people’s mandate without resistance.

“Lamido and Anenih allied with the defeated NRC to deny Abiola his rightful mandate,” Onanuga alleged.

In contrast, Onanuga said Tinubu, who was then a senator, stood firm before Gen. Sani Abacha dissolved democratic structures on Nov. 17, 1993.

“Following Babangida’s decision to step aside on Aug. 27, 1993, Tinubu strongly opposed the annulment.

“On 19 Aug. 19, 1993, on the Senate floor, Tinubu condemned the annulment, calling it another coup d’état,” Onanuga stated.

He urged Nigerians then to resist injustice and lawlessness.

Tinubu, then representing Lagos West, said the annulment constituted another unconstitutional seizure of power.

“We cannot keep tolerating injustice and coup d’état from those funded by public money,” Tinubu warned.

Tinubu described the political crisis as self-inflicted, caused by the annulment of a free and fair election.

He said the government violated its own decree, committing a grave offence against its people.

Onanuga highlighted Tinubu’s major role in NADECO and international efforts like NALICON led by Prof. Wole Soyinka.

He said Tinubu’s backing of NADECO and other pro-democracy movements was crucial in challenging military dictatorship.

“Tinubu was a central figure in the June 12 struggle and a consistent supporter of democracy,” Onanuga added.

He said many NADECO leaders and journalists credited Tinubu for funding and sustaining the resistance.

Onanuga dismissed Lamido’s narrative as part of a political agenda from a so-called ‘Coalition of the Disgruntled’.

“The facts remain: Tinubu was — and remains — a defender of democracy, unlike Lamido, who capitulated,” Onanuga said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu repositioning Nigeria for effective service delivery – Group

Tinubu repositioning Nigeria for effective service delivery – Group

By Emmanuel Oloniruha

A pro-Nigeria and anti-corruption NGO, Ahead Nigeria Initiative, says the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is repositioning Nigeria for effective service delivery.

Convener of the Initiative, Kehinde Alamoh, stated this during the group’s inaugural news conference on Thursday in Abuja.

Alamoh, who passed a vote of confidence in Tinubu, said that he had shown deep knowledge and understanding of Nigeria’s challenges and come up with a master plan to rescue the country.

He said that after a critical evaluation of Tinubu’s administration in all ramifications, it was evident that the president was alive to the primary responsibility of safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians.

He also commended the president for ending a decade of fuel subsidy regime which, he said, had been stunting the country’s growth.

Alamoh said that through this singular action, Tinubu had increased the country’s revenue to about N10.1 trillion, an increase of about 23.56 per cent over that of 2022.

He said that though the subsidy removal had brought some discomfort to Nigerians, government had rolled out some intervention programmes to help cushion the effects.

The interventions, according to him, include: the new minimum wage and salary increase, student loan scheme and scholarships, supporting states and local governments to enable them to cater for the less-privileged.

Others, he said, were: provision of grains to households, fertilisers to farmers, cash transfers to people with low incomes and the planned roll out of over 11,000 CNG buses for affordable public transportation, among others.

“The landmark presentation of the 2025 budget allocations of N4.91 trillion to defence and security underscores the importance of security of lives and property of all Nigerians.

“President Tinubu’s reform in aviation, railway infrastructure and security are visible, laudable and commendable.

“On this note, as law-abiding citizens of this country from the six geo-political zones, we, therefore, pass a vote of confidence in the President Tinubu-led administration,’’ he said.

Alamoh also commended the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, for providing responsible and effective leadership for the party, in tandem with the president’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.

He said that the APC National Working Committee (NWC) members, under Ganduje’s leadership, had created an enabling political environment for peace and development to thrive in Nigeria.

“This is evident in the peaceful conduct of the Kebbi, Edo and Ondo primary elections, followed by the subsequent victories of APC at the guber polls.

“All these have been described by political actors as the most peaceful, freest and fairest elections conducted under the watch of the party,’’ he said.

Alamoh also urged Nigerians to disregard the land grabbing allegations against the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, saying: “Abuja under Wike is in safe hands.”

He sought for the support of FCT residents for Wike for him to implement the ongoing infrastructural reforms in the capital city.

According to him, Wike’s achievements so far extend beyond mere infrastructural development

“Under few months, all uncompleted major projects, such as roads and railway have been completed.

“Wike’s efforts in internal revenue generation is second to none; all these attest to his innovative approach to good and progressive governance.

“His dedication to restoring the Abuja master plan and reposition the FCT among the world’s top capitals is in line with the renewed hope agenda of the president,’’ he said.

Alamoh warned those he called Wike’s detractors, whom he described as emergency activists, opponents and enemies of progress, to henceforth stay away or face the music. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Tax reforms not targeted at regions- Presidency

Tax reforms not targeted at regions- Presidency

By Salif Atojoko

The Presidency has dismissed allegations that the tax reform bills before the National Assembly are designed to impoverish certain regions.

In a statement on Monday, Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy stated that the bills aim to improve the lives of disadvantaged Nigerians without harming any region’s economy.

Onanuga stressed that the tax reform bills would not disproportionately benefit Lagos or Rivers states at the expense of other regions.

He criticised some commentators for spreading misinformation and attempting to incite public opposition to lawmakers.

He further explained that the bills do not propose the abolition of agencies such as NASENI, TETFUND, and NITDA.

Instead, they seek to consolidate earmarked taxes into a single tax that will be shared with these key agencies as beneficiaries.

“President Bola Tinubu initiated the Tax and Fiscal Policy Reforms to streamline tax administration, create a more conducive environment for businesses, and address the issue of multiple taxes, which have complicated the economic landscape,” Onanuga stated.

He urged stakeholders and public analysts to familiarise themselves with the contents of the bills and refrain from misleading the public.

Onanuga welcomed the public interest generated by the proposed reforms and encouraged leaders and stakeholders to participate in the Public Hearings organised by the National Assembly to share their views on the bills. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
