Tinubu pledges payment of GenCos’ N4trn debt claim after verification

‎President Bola Tinubu has assured power generation companies (GenCos) of the Federal Government’s commitment to settling outstanding debts, pending a thorough audit process.

‎The assurance was given on Friday during a meeting with the Association of Power Generation Companies at the State House, Abuja.

‎The meeting details were disclosed in a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

‎The delegation was led by retired Col. Sani Bello and included other key industry stakeholders.

‎Tinubu reiterated his commitment to resolving liquidity challenges affecting Nigeria’s electricity sector.

‎“I accept the liabilities of my predecessors, but only on credible and verifiable grounds.

‎“I must confirm the figures are authentic. This inheritance must not be cosmetic, but a tool for industrial and economic advancement,” Tinubu said.

‎He urged power firms and financial institutions to remain patient during the verification process.

‎“We are here now. Please inform your colleagues. Allow us time for proper validation of the numbers,” he added.

‎Tinubu emphasised support for a market-driven electricity sector and acknowledged unresolved legacy issues.

‎“This issue has lingered. We are now addressing it. We’ve saved significantly on fuel subsidies and introduced CNG to ease pressure on citizens,” he said.

‎He appealed to banks for cooperation in resolving financial constraints.

‎“To our banking partners, avoid foreclosures. Be prudent, but flexible. Let us endure this together,” he said.

‎Tinubu stressed that stable electricity is crucial to national growth and citizens’ wellbeing.

‎Special Adviser on Energy, Ms Olu Verheijen, said Tinubu approved a ₦4 trillion bond to ease power sector liquidity issues.

‎She attributed the crisis to years of unpaid tariff shortfalls and wide market gaps.

‎She noted the Federal Government owes a verified ₦4 trillion debt to GENCOs, dating back to 2015.

‎“We’ve met with 27 GENCOs to review their PPAs and gas agreements, validating the legitimacy of claims.

‎“GENCOs are claiming ₦4 trillion for the period 2015 to end of 2023,” she said.

‎She confirmed that NBET has so far validated ₦1.8 trillion of those claims.

‎“Additionally, ₦200 billion in unfunded subsidies has accumulated, increasing the government’s liability.

‎“As of April 2025, verified exposure stands at ₦4 trillion,” she said.

‎She warned that the debt figure might be adjusted following further assessments.

‎“The ₦4 trillion bond has anticipatory approval, subject to negotiation and agreement.

‎“Only verified debts will be included in the DMO’s final issuance,” Verheijen explained.

‎Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, praised Tinubu’s leadership and recent sector reforms.

‎“Your presence today confirms your unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s power development.

‎“Under your leadership, we’ve achieved critical sector milestones in under two years,” he said.

‎He described the Electricity Act 2023 as a breakthrough for decentralising and liberalising the market.

‎The administration also introduced the first Integrated National Electricity Policy in 24 years.

‎Adelabu said over $2 billion in private capital was attracted for grid expansion projects.

‎He reported that revenue rose by 70%, from ₦1 trillion in 2023 to ₦1.7 trillion in 2024.

‎This increase helped cut government subsidies by more than ₦700 billion.

‎Installed generation capacity reached 14,000 MW, with 5,801 MW achieved on March 4.

‎Daily energy delivery hit a record high of 120,370 megawatt-hours.

‎There was no national grid collapse in 2025, due to the Presidential Power Initiative.

‎This initiative added over 700 MW to transmission capacity.

‎He noted 300,000 smart meters were delivered under the ₦700 billion Presidential Metering Initiative and World Bank DISREP.

‎However, Adelabu warned that liquidity issues threaten to undo recent gains.

‎“The debt overhang could lead to a total shutdown of generation assets,” he said.

‎He urged the President to approve phased payments to GENCOs without delay.

‎He called for sustained structural reforms to stabilise the power sector.

‎Business leaders Tony Elumelu and Kola Adesina also urged swift government intervention.

‎“Mr President, the banks are threatening foreclosure. Not because of poor performance, but due to unpaid debts,” Elumelu said.

‎He praised Tinubu for restoring investor confidence and oil production.

‎“Before 2023, we lost 97 per cent of daily oil output. Today, we retain 98 per cent. That’s real progress,” Elumelu said.

‎Adesina also highlighted the urgent need for liquidity and reliable gas supply.

‎“Liquidity is the lifeblood of power generation. Without it, Nigeria’s development will suffer,” Adesina said.

‎He said underperforming plants in Afam lack gas due to unpaid suppliers.

‎“We suggest unlocking 800 million cubic feet of gas via NLNG for plant supply,” he said.

‎The meeting was attended by top government officials, regulators, and power sector stakeholders.

‎Present were the Chief of Staff, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, and Minister of Information Mohammed Idris. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

‎The directive was delivered during Tuesday’s fifth steering committee meeting at the State House, Abuja.

‎This is contained in a statement on the event issued by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga on Tuesday in Abuja.

‎Onanuga said that the President was represented at the even by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Tinubu said the recent Tax Reform Acts, signed into law in June, underscored the urgency of accelerating reforms and pursuing Nigeria’s $1 trillion economy target.

‎He highlighted the importance of financial and trade reforms in achieving national economic transformation.

‎”It’s important that we continue to stay focused on this project. So that at the end of the day, we meet our timelines and achieve the results the President expects.

‎”As you all are aware, the project is one of the transformative initiatives of Mr. President which we collectively must ensure is effectively and commendably implemented,” Gbajabiamila said.

‎He emphasised the role of a unified electronic platform in simplifying Nigeria’s import and export operations.

‎According to him, the NSW will boost investment and trade revenues, improve transparency, and strengthen Nigeria’s global business credibility.

‎Tinubu urged all agencies to refine their targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to meet the Phase 1 deadline.

‎”I do expect that since the last meeting of the steering committee held on April 8, all stakeholders have operated and actively progressed with all the required KPIs and set targets to ensure that we go live with phase 1 in Q1 2026 as was previously scheduled,” he said.

‎Mr Wale Edun, Minister of Finance, described the progress as encouraging but stressed the need for swift execution.

‎He urged a shift from strategy to concrete implementation, calling the project complex but transformational.

‎Edun urged the committee to improve collaboration and resolve final hurdles to meet the rollout timeline.

‎Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment charged the committee to work diligently and meet the Q1 2026 deadline.

‎Dr Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), thanked the President for consistently supporting the project.

‎”On behalf of the steering committee we thank you for the relentless support that you have given to us.”

‎”To all my colleagues here, we can see that the reward for hard work is more work. When we started last month, it is now law; the single window is now in the law.”

‎He asked committee members to stay focused on the mission ahead.

‎The Director of the National Single Window (NSW) Project, Tola Fakolade, gave a brief overview of the steering committee’s progress toward implementing the project.

‎”‘All second quarter 2025 key project milestones have been successfully achieved and the customisation of the Single window platform has commenced,” he said.

‎He gave assurances that the committee would meet up with the timelines.

‎The National Single Window project is a Federal Government initiative to streamline trade processes by creating a centralised electronic platform for importers and exporters.

‎It is a digital trade facilitation platform expected to accelerate economic growth and facilitate cross-border transactions.

‎Launched in April 2024, the NSW seeks to consolidate all agencies involved in imports and exports onto a unified electronic portal.

‎It is expected to reduce trade costs, cut delays, and enhance transparency and efficiency at Nigerian ports.

‎President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to leave Abuja on Sunday for Ijebu-Ode, Ogun, where he will attend the eighth-day prayer for Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The Awujale of Ijebu, a revered traditional ruler, passed away on July 13 at the age of 91 and was buried the following day.

His burial, conducted in accordance with Islamic rites, took place quietly in Ijebu-Ode, marking the end of a remarkable era of leadership.

The Oba, who ruled for an unprecedented 65 years, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers and a major voice in national affairs.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Tinubu will be joined by Gov. Dapo Abiodun and other dignitaries at the solemn event.

The prayer ceremony is scheduled to hold at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, one of the largest venues in Ijebu-Ode.

The event is expected to draw traditional rulers, political leaders, business executives and religious figures from across Nigeria and beyond.

Earlier on Friday, the President paid a condolence visit to Kano, where he sympathised with the family of late elder statesman, Alh. Aminu Dantata.

Tinubu has intensified condolence visits in recent weeks following the loss of several high-profile Nigerians, including former President Muhammadu Buhari.

These visits reflect his commitment to honouring leaders who have served Nigeria with distinction and left a lasting legacy.

During Oba Adetona’s 90th birthday and 64th coronation anniversary, Tinubu conferred upon him Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, recognising his national contributions.

The Oba was widely regarded as a progressive traditional ruler who spoke truth to power and prioritised education and development across Ijebu community.

In his journey to the presidency, Tinubu began his consultations with Oba Adetona, a gesture that demonstrated deep personal and political respect.

After emerging victorious, he returned to the Awujale’s palace to express appreciation, fulfilling a promise he made during the campaign.

In preparation for the eighth-day prayer, security has been strengthened across Ijebu-Ode, especially on roads leading to key venues.

Streets around Dipo Dina Stadium, the Awujale’s Palace, and his Igbeba private residence are now under strict surveillance by security operatives.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Amotekun Corps are positioned at strategic points.

Their presence is to ensure peace and proper coordination of the event, expected to attract thousands of mourners and well-wishers.

NAN also reports that several major markets in Ijebu-Ode will be closed on Sunday to honour the departed monarch.

Markets like Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje will suspend activities to allow traders and residents pay their final respects.

Locals describe the late Oba Adetona as a beacon of development and a monarch whose reign transformed Ijebu’s social and economic standing.

Many residents expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for choosing to personally honour the memory of the departed royal father.

Yusuf Balogun, a local cab driver, said the prayer is significant, particularly for Muslims, as it is part of Islamic burial traditions.

“Our baba brought development and dignity to Ijebu community. We pray Allah forgives his sins and grants him Al-jannah Firdaus,” Balogun said emotionally.

He added, “The President’s visit is a great honour to us. It shows the impact our Oba made on Nigeria.”

Damilola Ogunsanwo, a petty trader near the stadium, said the event has created opportunities for small businesses and increased customer traffic.

She noted that visitors have already started arriving, creating demand for food, water, fabrics, and accommodation in the area.

Several hotel operators in Ijebu-Ode confirmed to NAN that occupancy rates have surged ahead of the prayer ceremony.

Some hotels reported being fully booked and anticipate more visitors arriving as the President and other dignitaries head into town.

Ijebu-Ode residents say this is a fitting tribute to a monarch who embodied dignity, service, and development throughout his extraordinary reign.

Oba Adetona is remembered as a moderniser, champion of education, and advocate of good governance and accountability.

His reign helped position Ijebuland as a centre of excellence, attracting investment, scholarship, and tourism to the region.

As Nigeria mourns his passing, the eighth-day prayer offers an opportunity to reflect on a life of meaningful leadership and uncommon wisdom. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

‎The Federal Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to resolving the visa dispute with the United States and United Arab Emirates (UAE) through diplomatic engagement.

The government also reiterated its unwavering commitment to strengthening longstanding cordial diplomatic relations with the governments of both countries.

‎This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

‎He said the reassurance followed recent adjustments in visa issuance policies affecting Nigerian citizens by both countries.

‎According to Onanuga, relevant government agencies are actively engaging with their counterparts to address the concerns through appropriate channels.

‎“The United States Government has officially communicated that its decision was based on two principal factors: the current rate of visa overstays by Nigerian nationals and the need for reliable access to their records.

‎“It further explained that the visa policy adjustment is part of its global visa reciprocity process which is routinely reviewed and subject to change, including the number of permitted entries and validity durations.”

‎President Bola Tinubu, he said, had directed all federal agencies to comply fully with international obligations and strengthen consular identity verification systems.

‎“The President calls on all Nigerians to respect the immigration regulations of their host countries and to uphold the integrity of the permits and privileges granted to them under the laws of those jurisdictions,” Onanuga said.

‎Regarding new visa requirements for UAE transit visas, Onanuga clarified that no formal notice had been received from the Emirati government.

‎“The Federal Government notes that it has not received any formal communication from the UAE authorities regarding a revised visa policy.

‎“However, it is observed that visa issuance is currently progressing in a gradual and orderly manner,” he said.

‎According to him, the president appreciates the UAE’s ongoing cooperation with Nigerian authorities and commitment to resolving issues.

‎“Any genuine concerns raised are being addressed through the appropriate channels in a spirit of mutual respect and collaboration,” Onanuga added.

The ‎president, he said, gave an assurance that the welfare of Nigerians abroad remains a top priority under his 4-D Foreign Policy agenda, particularly its Diaspora engagement pillar.

‎He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with the governments of both the United States and UAE.‎(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
