President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday urged Northern leaders to seek robust solutions to the numerous challenges confronting the region.

Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, made the call at a stakeholders’ roundtable on Northern Nigerian Youth Development, organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Abuja.

The theme of the roundtable was ‘Empowering the Next Generation: Strategies for Sustainable Youth Development in Northern Nigeria’.

He said that the legacies of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Premier of Northern Nigeria, reinforced the conviction that the development of the North is central to the prosperity of Nigeria.

According to the President, Nigeria cannot prosper unless every part of the country thrives.

“Whatever disrupts the growth of one region sets back the entire nation.

“Unless we as leaders wear our thinking caps and come up with robust solutions to Northern Nigeria’s problems, it is not beyond us. It is not rocket science; we can do it.

“This is why we prioritise initiatives such as the Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Commission, which collaborates with all levels of government to ensure that every child has access to quality education.

“For the dividends of democracy to reach every corner of our nation, we must empower local governments to serve as pipelines of governance.

“This is why we have prioritised Local Government Autonomy, enabling them to receive their full entitlements and improve primary education funding.

“But governance is a shared responsibility, and citizens must hold their leaders accountable to ensure that every child is given a fighting chance,” Tinubu added.

Tinubu urged Northerners, especially the youth, to imbibe the spirit of tolerance, work, and worship as embraced by the late Sardauna of Sokoto.

He said that the energy, creativity, and ingenuity of Nigerian youth offer the chance to not only transform Nigeria, but also to lead Africa into a new era of growth and innovation.

“The challenge we must confront with urgency, compassion, and resolve is investing in the education of our younger ones. Either we take care of them, or they will take care of us down the line.

“We can afford to send our wards to private schools, but the children of the poor that we leave behind will certainly chase us out of this land,” Tinubu said.

Earlier, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), advised governments at all levels to increase funding for education.

“Let’s see how we can help our children, take them off the street, build schools, bring qualified teachers, and involve traditional leaders across the country to really sit with the people and discuss some of these issues,” he said.

The Sultan commended the Federal Government for establishing the Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Commission, describing it as a crucial initiative.

“The commission has been going around, talking to us. All of us must work together to ensure this commission achieves its goals,” he said.

Also, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, Muazu Babangida, explained that the foundation was established to promote good governance in the country.

“Over the past 15 years, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has made significant strides in fulfilling its mandate of promoting sustainable development and social progress in Northern Nigeria, particularly in education,” he said.

Babangida added that the roundtable was organised to find a lasting solution to youth restiveness and the increasing number of out-of-school children in Northern Nigeria.

He urged the government to take the recommendations from the discussions seriously for the progress and well-being of the region.

The roundtable was attended by serving and former governors, executives of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), leaders of youth organisations, and other critical stakeholders in Nigeria. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Prince Mohammed Al Saud, the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, has assured Nigeria of support in its economic reform programmes.

The Crown Prince gave the assurance during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on the sidelines of the joint Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the president’s spokesman, said in a statement.

He said the two leaders explored potential areas for cooperation, particularly oil and gas, agriculture, infrastructure and the constitution of the Saudi-Nigeria Business Council.

“Nigeria wants an agreement with the Saudi government over a proposed five billion dollars bilateral trade facility between the two countries.

“The Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC) invested $1.24 billion in 2022 to acquire a 35.43 per cent stake in Olam Agri, one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural firms.

“Talks are being held so that SALIC can have more stake in the company.

The Saudi hoped the investment would make Olam one of the biggest agro-allied businesses in the world,” said Onanuga.

He said the Crown Prince commended President Tinubu’s economic reforms, noting similarities with steps taken to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s stability and development when he became Prime Minister.

“He also assured Nigeria of his support and promised to motivate his team to realise the various areas of partnerships discussed at the meeting,” said the President’s spokesman. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Sen. Basheer Lado, Special Adviser to the President, Legislative Matters, says President Bola Tinubu is committed to a harmonious working relationship among senators.

He said the President recognised the critical role of the senate in driving legislative progress.

Lado said, in a statement, that online reports claiming that security agents were deployed to prevent senators from carrying out their duties, specifically in relation to an alleged impeachment of the Senate President, were false.

“I wish to categorically state that these reports are baseless and should be disregarded as there is no discord within the rank and file of the senators.

“The legislative body remains united in its commitment to the advancement of Nigeria’s democracy,” said Lado.

He said the President remained committed to ensuring collaboration between the executive and legislature based on mutual respect, dialogue, and shared goals for peace, progress and prosperity of all Nigerians.

“The senate continues to function freely and without interference, and any security presence within the National Assembly Complex is for the routine safety and protection of legislators and staff.

“I, therefore, urge the public to disregard such unfounded publications which could undermine the integrity of the legislature,” said the legislative aide. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Presidency on Wednesday clarified that there was no leadership vacuum in the country, with President Bola Tinubu and his Vice Kashimu Shettima out of the country.

Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, Information and Strategy, said in a statement that the clarification was in response to enquiries by journalists as to who was in charge of our country.

“It is important to note that the President and Vice President are fully engaged with the nation’s affairs, even while they are away. There is no leadership vacuum in the country.

“President Tinubu left the country on Oct. 3 and is on a two-week working vacation. During this time, he has been busy answering phones and issuing directives on matters of state.

“He will soon return to the country before the vacation officially expires,” said Onanuga.

He explained that the vice president departed the country Wednesday for Sweden on an official visit, and all state organs were functioning as usual.

“The Senate President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ministers, and Service Chiefs are all in their respective positions, ensuring the smooth operation of the government.

“We had a similar situation in 2022 when former President Buhari and former Vice President Osinbajo were found to be simultaneously out of the country.

“President Buhari attended UNGA 77, while Osinbajo participated in the burial of Queen Elizabeth ll,” he said.

He said there was also similar situation during this administration between late April and early May.

While Tinubu was in London, after visiting the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia, where he attended the World Economic Forum, Shettima left Nigeria for Nairobi to attend the International Development Association (IDA21) Heads of State Summit.

“After returning, he left for Dallas, Texas, to attend the US-Africa Business Summit organised by the Corporate Council on Africa.

“President Tinubu returned home on May 8. During this time, the government’s machinery did not halt,” said the Special Adviser.

Onanuga added that “the Constitution, a testament to our adaptability in the virtual age, does not explicitly require the physical presence of either the president or the vice president in the country at all times to fulfil his duties”. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
