A News Analysis by Mark Longyen, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

For the first time in 14 years, the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Nigeria’s sole external radio broadcaster, recently held a strategic management retreat.

The landmark event, with the theme: “VON in the 21st Century: Restrategising for Global Impact,” was spearheaded by its Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Malam Jibrin Ndace.

The event was organised to reflect Ndace’s strategic vision and drive as well as to reflect on the agency’s achievements over the years, realign its strategic priorities, and reposition it as a leader in contemporary global broadcasting.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, who was the chairman of the occasion, while declaring the event open, described 2025 as a critical year for consolidating President Tinubu’s socio-economic and political reforms.

He underscored VON’s role in amplifying the administration’s achievements and fostering global awareness of Nigeria’s developmental strides under President Tinubu.

Idris urged VON to positively project the key achievements of the administration, such as fiscal reforms; empowering state and local governments; progress in the war on terrorism; and providing education loans for Nigerian youth, globally.

“There’s no doubt that 2025 will consolidate Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is already yielding significant progress across various facets of our national life.

“The Voice of Nigeria must tell the world that Nigeria is working again.

“We are winning the war on terrorism, banditry, and ethnic conflicts.

“We are providing education loans for our youth and transitioning to sustainable energy solutions,” Idris emphasised.

The minister also stressed the importance of combating fake news, adopting innovative digital technologies, and strengthening Nigeria’s image as a regional and global powerhouse.

Idris commended Ndace for his exemplary leadership, adding that VON was becoming a driving force in showcasing Nigeria’s progress.

He also lauded VON’s dedication to promoting Nigeria’s culture, policies, and achievements to a global audience, especially in the 21st Century.

In his opening remarks, Ndace described the retreat as “a transformative milestone in VON’s history.”

He underscored the importance of innovation, collaboration, and strategic planning, stressing that the event was critical in revitalising VON’s mandate of amplifying Nigeria’s voice on the global stage

Ndace expressed his deep gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support and trust in VON’s leadership.

According to him, the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda has inspired the agency’s mission to showcase Nigeria’s progress and leadership across Africa.

He also lauded the Minister of Information and National Orientation for his pivotal role in reshaping VON’s strategic focus.

Ndace appreciated the National Assembly, fellow heads of sister media agencies, including the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), National Orientation Agency (NOA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), for their unwavering support.

He also outlined his vision for VON, saying it is built on three key pillars – People, Platform, and Partnerships.

On the first pillar, which is the people, he described the workforce as the heartbeat of VON and pledged to foster collaboration, inclusivity, and professional growth.

Recognising the role of younger audiences, he reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to engaging youth and integrating their perspectives into national and global conversations.

On the second pillar, which is platform, the DG stressed the need to modernise, and highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen VON’s digital presence and upgrade its broadcasting infrastructure.

This, he said, would enable the agency to deliver high-quality and impactful content to a diverse global audience.

On strategic partnerships, Ndace celebrated VON’s recent collaborations with key stakeholders, such as the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) and the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).

“These partnerships are instrumental to enriching VON’s programming, expanding its reach, and promoting Nigeria’s soft power globally,” the DG said.

Ndace further emphasised VON’s commitment to inclusivity through the production of multilingual content, which reflects Nigeria’s rich diversity.

He said that this was the reason for VON’s recent strategic collaborations with the Ministry of Solid Minerals, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), among others.

“This is in line with our restrategising efforts to ensure that all Nigerians, regardless of language or location, are connected to the nation’s progress, and for VON to make global impact in the 21st century,” he said.

While stressing the critical role of strategic innovation, Ndace challenged stakeholders to contribute ideas to reposition VON for greater global relevance.

“This retreat marks a new chapter for VON, and together, we will achieve our vision of becoming a leading voice for Nigeria and Africa.

“There is the need for us to leverage cutting-edge technology, enhance digital content delivery, and amplify narratives that project Nigeria and Africa positively.

“This retreat is a call to action for all of us to reimagine VON’s future and reaffirm its position as a pillar of Nigeria’s soft power,” he said.

Ndace expressed confidence that the insights gained from the retreat would set VON on a renewed path toward greater global relevance and impact.

“This retreat reaffirms VON’s commitment to its mandate of providing a strategic framework to enhance its role as Nigeria’s external broadcaster and project the nation’s success stories to international audiences,” Ndace said. (NAN)

The Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Malam Ali M. Ali, says the agency will commence broadcast in local languages before the end of 2025.

Ali made this known on Wednesday in Abuja at a public hearing organised by the House of Representatives Special Committee on Restructuring Federal Government Agencies.

NAN reports that the hearing was on the need to scrap outdated agencies and ensuring merger of government agencies with similar mandates.

Ali said with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), NAN was set to inaugurate portals to broadcast in the three major languages of Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo – before the end of 2025.

According to the managing director, Immersive Journalism (IJ) has come into the media space and it is taking over jobs, while many people are not aware.

NAN reports that IJ is a news reporting style that uses technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) to create a first-person experience for the audience.

The goal is to help the audience to understand and empathise with a story by placing them within the device.

Ali said that the commencement of broadcast in local languages was part of ongoing reforms in the agency to bring it up-to-date and ahead of the current trends.

According to him, NAN is not afraid of competition, given its large workforce, partnership and professionalism.

“We have already started in Hausa; Hausa is the largest spoken language in West Africa; we have 88 million speakers in Nigeria, according to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

“Hausa is about the only non-ethnic language; people who are not necessarily Hausa speak and understand the language.

“Early next year, we are hoping to launch the Yoruba portal and by the middle of the year, we will have the Igbo portal; it is work in progress.

“We are asking our reporters to study other foreign languages like Arabic and French because we have to reposition the agency,” he said.

On revenue generation, the managing director said that NAN generated N215 million in 2024, stressing that NAN was already going into digital marketing to add to the revenue being generated from subscription.

Aside the contents to sell on social media like Facebook, Tiktok and X, he said,  NAN was also consolidating its revenue generation like other media organisations.

The committee commended the agency for the professionalism and high standards in news reporting.

Rep. Ademorin Kuye (APC-Lagos) said that in spite of current challenges, NAN had remained impressive in its news reporting.

Kuye said NAN had been patriotic and optimistic in its news gathering and dissemination.

The committee ruled that the management should furnish the committee with areas of NAN Establishment Act that required amendment to enable the agency to perform optimally. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dr Ibrahim Goni, Conservator-General of the National Park Service (NPS), has pledged to enhance the service standing both locally and internationally through strategic collaborations.

The Conservator-General made this commitment in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

He said that his dedication to service was further strengthened by a commendation letter from Mr Umar Gari, Chairman of the Serti-Baruwa Local Government Area in Taraba.

Goni also noted that the park’s recent recognition as a World Heritage site by the World Heritage Volunteers has inspired him to pursue more strategic collaborations.

Gari, who also spoke with NAN, praised Goni for the transformative initiatives introduced at Gashaka Gumti National Park under his leadership.

These initiatives, he said, led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Africa Nature Investors.

He added that these efforts have enhanced park protection, improved internal security, and positively impacted the local community through various initiatives.

The chairman also commended the Conservator-General for appointing Deputy Conservator of Parks (DCP) Jonah Moses, a native of the local government, as acting Conservator of Parks for Hadejia Wetlands National Park.

Gari further lauded Goni’s efforts in creating job opportunities for local youth, but appealed for more employment opportunities, particularly in senior positions.

The chairman assured Goni of his community’s unwavering support for the National Park Service’s efforts to achieve international standards in conservation and sustainable management of Nigeria’s parks. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Dr Stanley Jacob, Chief Executive Officer of Zest Payment Ltd., has urged the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) to lead the development of Nigerian-built software for secretaries and corporate governance professionals.

Jacob made this appeal at the ICSAN Lagos Chapter Summit on Thursday in Lagos.

He noted that such software would be essential in advancing the digital transformation of ICSAN’s operations over the next two years.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the summit, themed “Governance and Business Innovation in Contemporary Times,” addressed current issues in governance and innovation.

Jacob noted that one of the primary barriers to digital transformation is the cost of digitalisation, necessitating the need for ICSAN to develop locally tailored software for Nigerian company secretaries, administrators, and governance practitioners.

“As President of the Fintech Association of Nigeria, we are committed to collaborating with ICSAN to adopt the right technologies and train secretaries to use them effectively,” he said.

Jacob added that digital software would enable secretaries to track compliance, ensure data security, and protect stakeholder privacy.

He also encouraged secretaries to leverage technology to offer insights and strategic recommendations to company boards.

“Digital adoption must be optimised, with secretaries working closely with boards to facilitate a seamless transition.

“Secretaries should stay informed about emerging technologies and implement the best tools available.”

Ms. Efosa Ewere, Chairperson of the ICSAN Lagos Chapter, stated that governance and innovation are increasingly interconnected in today’s fast-paced world.

She emphasised that this synergy shapes the resilience and success of organisations and influences society as a whole.

Ewere noted that Nigeria’s economic uncertainties and rapid technological shifts require governance professionals to rethink frameworks, fostering innovation while ensuring accountability and ethics.

“In today’s context, good governance goes beyond compliance; it’s about creating an environment where innovation thrives while maintaining transparency and integrity.

“We need governance frameworks that encourage creativity and safeguard stakeholders’ interests”.

Mr Hakeem Ogunniran, Chairman of Lagos Building Investment Co. Plc, stressed that understanding the link between governance and business innovation is essential for a successful business environment.

He explained that innovation is a means to meet organisational demands and achieve market dominance.

Ogunniran also noted that the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) opens new avenues for corporate governance professionals, though he cautioned that they must be aware of AI’s limitations and potential misuse. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
