A passenger train travelling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed on Thursday morning, leaving several cabins overturned along the busy corridor.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident caused panic among the passengers, many of whom scrambled to safety.

Although details remained sketchy, there were no confirmed reports of casualties as of press time.

The Managing Director of NRC, Mr Kayode Opeifa, told NAN in a telephone interview that “yes, it has been confirmed. But there was no any casualty”.

Eyewitnesses said some coaches were badly affected, with the passengers sustaining minor injuries while trying to exit the overturned cabins.

The exact cause of the derailment was yet to be determined.

However, possible factors being considered include vandalism and scavengers’ activities along the rail line, or mechanical issues such as hot axles.

NAN reports that emergency responders were said to be assessing the situation.

Authorities were also expected to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the derailment.

NAN also reports that this was not the first challenge faced on the route.

The Kaduna-Abuja rail corridor had witnessed disruptions and security threats in the past, most notably the March 2022 terrorist attack that claimed several lives and led to the suspension of services.

Also, just last week, the Abuja-Kaduna train service experienced a technical scare linked to a hot axle.

The Management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says that the temporarily suspended train operations on the Warri–Itakpe corridor will soon resume.

The Chief Public Relations Officer, Mr Callistus Unyimadu, made this known in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

“Operations were temporarily suspended on the train service to enable us carry out urgent and critical track repairs aimed at guaranteeing the safety, reliability, and comfort of passengers.

“The corporation is pleased to announce that work on the affected sections has reached an advanced stage, and normal train movement will recommence in the shortest possible time.

“The NRC deeply appreciates the patience, understanding, and cooperation of passengers during this period of service interruption,” he said.

Unyimadu noted that the NRC remained committed to providing safe, efficient, and reliable rail transport services across the country.

He said that subsequent announcement would be communicated on the official date for the resumption of full operations. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says the rail transport on Warri-Itakpe (WITS) corridor is safe and operational.

The Ag. Deputy Director, Public Relations, NRC, Mr Callistus Unyimadu, said this, in a statement, in Lagos.

“The attention of the NRC has been drawn to a widely circulated social media massage warning the public to avoid train travel, particularly along Warri – Itakpe rail corridor.

“The message, accompanied by a short video showing removed rail clips, falsely claims that rail transport is currently unsafe and urges passengers to cancel travel plans.

“We wish to categorically state that this information is misleading and unfounded,” he said.

Unyimadu noted that the identified incident, which involved the temporary removal of some rail clips at a specific location on the corridor, was promptly detected during routine inspection and was immediately rectified by NRC maintenance team.

“All necessary safety and operational protocols were strictly followed to ensure that no threat was posed to passengers or the integrity of the train operations.

“Indeed, the Warri-Itakpe train (WITS) has successfully passed through affected section without any incident, further confirming the safety of the route,” he said.

He pointed out that the NRC remained committed to the highest standards of safety and security in all its operations.

He added that NRC tracks and rolling stock are under constant surveillance and maintenance and NRC personnel are fully equipped to address any issues that may arise in real time.

“We, therefore, urge the public to disregard the viral message and continue to use our train services with full confidence.

“Any attempt to spread fear or discourage the use of rail transport undermines the progress being made in the sector and should be condemned.

“Train services on the Warri-Itakpe corridor and all other NRC corridors remain safe, reliable and fully operational.

“For official update and travel advisory, we encourage passengers to rely only on verified NRC communication channels,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Government on Monday said it would offer free train service to all Nigerians from Dec. 20 up until Jan. 5, 2025.

Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, said this while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

Idris said the free train service was consistent with President Tinubu’s desire to cushion the effect of high transportation costs for the most vulnerable Nigerians.

“Recall that this also happened in the last Christmas period and the Sallah period, and Mr President has also approved that this year, from Dec. 20 to Jan. 5, there will be free transport service nationwide,” he said.

The Minister also said FEC approved a proposal by President Tinubu to rename the University of Abuja to honour Gen. Yakubu Gowon.

“The University of Abuja will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University. Of course, the processing will have to go to the National Assembly, for all legislation in that direction.

“But FEC has taken that decision to write to the National Assembly to change the name of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honour of the former head of state and elder statesman,” said Idris.

He also said the Council commended President Tinubu for his stewardship for the past 18 months and also reiterated the commitment of its members and support for his programmes and leadership.

He stated that the FEC would proceed on recess from Dec. 18 to Jan. 6, 2025. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
