The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the University of Lagos Alumni Association has given scholarship awards to 28 Senior Secondary School students from indigent households across the six area councils of the FCT.
The scholarship covers school fees, levies, West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.
Vice Chairperson of the association, Mrs Julia Davis, said during the event in Abuja on Thursday, that 28 brilliant students, including children with special needs were selected based on their performances.
“The amount that we have given each of the beneficiaries will cover their WAEC and NECO exams, their WAEC and school fees for the year.
“This scholarship award is the third edition and we will continue to support intelligent students from indigent households,” she said.
Earlier, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Mr Emmanuel Emele, explained that the target beneficiaries were indigent students in SS 3.
Dr Danlami Hayyo, Mandate Secretary, FCT Education Secretariat commended the association for the gesture.
Represented by the Director/Secretary, FCT Secondary Education Board, Hajiya Fatima Babba, the mandate secretary noted that lots of students struggle to pay their fees.
According to him, the scholarship will relieve their parents from the burden of examinations and school fees.
Hayyo urged other non-governmental organisations and individuals to emulate the gesture and support in removing financial barriers to education. (NAN)
