Caritas Nigeria on Monday urged 800 beneficiaries of its skill acquisition programme to be business oriented with the skills acquired and start-up kits received.
Caritas, a humanitarian arm of the Catholic Church, made the appeal during the presentation of start-up kits and certificate of participation to the trainees in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, with theme “Building Sustainable Livelihoods in Vibrant Community” (B-SLiC) was sponsored by the Conrad Hilton Foundation of the United States.
NAN also reports that the trainees, chosen according to their interest in various vocations, were attached to master trainers in their localities for the training.
The areas of training are hair, clothes and bead making, plumbing, catering, bread baking and welding.
The Executive Secretary, Caritas Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina, said the skills were to make the beneficiaries self-reliant and able to train others in the community.
Obodoechina decried the nonchalant attitude of people to business ethics, and urged the beneficiaries to cultivate good business ethics and customer relations to ensure growth in their vocations.
“Try as much as you can to make an enroute into the marketing of your various areas of interest by being good to clients and customers to retain them.
“People are already doing the work or business in the community before you came into it, therefore, your good price, good conduct and record keeping will enable you get part of the market and grow from there,” he said.
The executive secretary, who said that the project was to advance the welfare of the less privileged in the society, charged the beneficiaries to help in training others to aid wealth creation and poverty reduction.
In her remarks, the Director of Humanitarian Service, Caritas Nigeria, Nkese Udongwo, implored the trainee-beneficiaries not to sell the equipment and items but put them to proper use to be self-reliant.
Mr Gabriel Udom, a master trainer, that tutored the catering team, said that the trainees had gotten life supportive skills in food cooking and confectionery making, aside others.
He commended the organisers for being people-oriented.
Ms Abigail Adebowale, a beneficiary of the hairdressing and hair making skill, said that she had long been looking for such an opportunity.
She thanked Caritas Nigeria for fulfilling her heart’s desire, saying she could now make trendy artificial hair she could sell and earn a living. (NAN)
