A psychologist, Prof. Remi Alarape, has advised individuals with suicidal tendencies to seek professional help rather than resort to suicide.

Alarape, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, Ogun State.

His remarks came in response to recent suicide incidents, including the case of a police officer who shot himself in the Igbesa area and a 19-year-old boy who hanged himself in Ijebu Igbo, both in Ogun State.

Alarape emphasised that the rise in suicide cases across the country made it imperative for the public to take the matter seriously.

He explained that suicide was a complex issue with multiple causes, but common contributing factors include mental health conditions, trauma, stress, social isolation, academic pressure, substance abuse, and a lack of support, especially among young people.

“Suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility. By working together, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for all,” Alarape said.

He urged people struggling with suicidal thoughts, or who knew someone who was, to reach out to a trusted adult, mental health professional, or helpline.

Alarape further recommended several steps to reduce the incidence of suicide, including encouraging open conversations, listening actively, promoting mental health awareness, fostering a supportive community, and developing effective coping strategies. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
