NGO partners NDLEA, others to combat drug abuse

The Re-Orientation Advocacy of Nigeria (RAN) has forged partnerships with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders to proactively combat drug abuse within the country.
Other stakeholders are the Federal Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Police.
During a stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Mr Charles Folayan, the Executive Director of RAN, emphasised the importance of bridging gaps and fostering connections among stakeholders involved in the fight against drug abuse.
He highlighted that the collaboration aims to establish a unified front for evidence-based interventions encompassing prevention, treatment, and care.
Folayan emphasised that this strategic partnership aligns with the administration’s agenda, spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu, to tackle the menace of drug abuse and its far-reaching consequences.
He commended the efforts of organisations involved, acknowledging the pressing need to address the challenges posed by drug abuse, particularly among the youth and women.
Citing research findings, Folayan underscored the gravity of the drug abuse problem in Nigeria, identifying it as a precursor to various societal issues, including indiscipline, lawlessness, and crime.
He stressed the necessity for a comprehensive approach, from identifying causes and affected individuals to implementing treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration processes.
The collaborative initiative aims to streamline efforts in accordance with the National Drug Control Master Plan 2021–2025 and the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Act.
Mr Peter Njoku, a representative of NDLEA, expressed gratitude for RAN’s consistent partnership since 2016, pledging the agency’s continuous support.
Mrs Wosilat Abdulamee, Head of Narcotics at the Federal Ministry of Health, announced the ministry’s preparedness to launch an intervention focused on the treatment of individuals with drug use disorders. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
