FG, Erasmus+ forge alliance to cultivate globally competitive graduates
By Funmilayo Adeyemi
The Federal Government has formalised a strategic partnership with the Erasmus+ program, aiming to cultivate graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills vital for propelling Nigeria’s sustainable development.
This collaboration was unveiled by the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, during the inaugural Erasmus+ National Information Day held in Abuja.
The Erasmus+ program, a European Union initiative spanning 2021-2027, focuses on supporting education, training, youth, and sports through funding various programs, projects, and scholarships.
Sununu, addressing attendees, underscored the significance of the Erasmus scholarship scheme as a prominent avenue for international collaboration, talent harnessing, and knowledge exchange.
The minister emphasised the resonance between this initiative and the “Renewed Hope Agenda” championed by President Bola Tinubu’s Administration.
This agenda places a premium on producing globally competitive graduates, arming the youth with essential skills for the 21st-century knowledge-driven economy.
Furthermore, he highlighted the recent launch of an education roadmap designed to reposition Nigeria’s education system, aligning it with the nation’s reform goals.
Effective collaboration with international development partners and stakeholders, he noted, is pivotal for successfully implementing this roadmap.
Speaking on the potential impact, the minister explained, “The collaboration with Erasmus+ is an opportunity to improve the cross-fertilisation of ideas and knowledge, providing our students exposure to courses not readily available within our country.”
Zissimos Vergos, the Deputy Head of Delegation, Erasmus+, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential for academic excellence.
Considering Nigeria’s significant demographic footprint, Vergos stressed the importance of educating the citizenry for meaningful impact and a life-changing educational experience.
The Erasmus+ program, fostering cooperation between EU member states, associated third countries, and non-associated third countries, serves as a catalyst for global educational partnerships.
This alliance signifies a major step towards preparing Nigerian graduates to contribute significantly to national development in the evolving global landscape. (NAN)
