The Ayida Foundation has flagged off the second edition of the Lagos Schools Tennis Tournament, bringing together over 250 young players from within and outside Lagos State.
The week-long competition, which began on Wednesday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, runs from Oct. 15 to Oct. 19 and features participants from both primary and secondary schools.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event is part of the foundationโs ongoing efforts to promote sports development, nurture young talent, and encourage active youth participation in tennis.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Mr Bawo Ayida, a member of the foundation and grandson of late Allison and Oluremi Ayida, said the initiative aims to build character, discipline, and confidence among young athletes.
โThis tournament provides an opportunity for kids to compete, learn, and grow.
โItโs exciting to see so much energy and passion among the players.
โWe had about 200 participants in 2023, and this year we have surpassed that number, a sign that grassroots tennis is gaining ground,โ Ayida said
He noted that the tournament, which features U-12, U-14, U-16, and U-18 categories, has become a strong platform for identifying potential stars who can represent Nigeria at national and international levels.
โSports, especially tennis, helps young people stay focused, develop mental strength, and connect positively with their peers.
โItโs a great outlet for mental wellness and youth empowerment,โ Ayida said.
He also acknowledged the teamwork behind the eventโs success.
โThis tournament is powered by family, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters, all working together in the spirit of love, service, and excellence, the values my grandparents stood for,โ Ayida said.
Also speaking, Mr Sunday Igbinovia, Coordinator of the Ayida Foundation Tennis Tournament, said the initiative seeks to democratise tennis by taking it beyond its traditional elite circles.
โThe goal is to make tennis accessible to every child,โ Igbinovia said.
โUnlike football, you canโt just play tennis on the streets. So, weโre taking the game to schools to discover and groom new talents from the grassroots.โ
He added that this yearโs edition has recorded a higher turnout, improved prize structure, and participation from schools outside Lagos.
โWeโve expanded the categories and upgraded the prizes to make the event more competitive and rewarding.
โThis is about growth, not just for the players, but for the future of Nigerian tennis,โ he said.
Igbinovia noted that tennis has the potential to generate employment and revenue, while instilling discipline and positive values in young players.
โSports teaches hard work, focus, and respect. Beyond the competition, thatโs the lasting impact weโre aiming for,โ he said.
The Ayida Foundation Lagos Schools Tennis Tournament continues to grow as one of the leading youth sports platforms in the state, building a new generation of tennis champions and fostering community spirit through sports. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
