Prof. Taiwo Olaiya, Chairman, Governing Council, The Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun, has described the death of Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, as a colossal loss to the nation.

Olaiya said this on the sidelines of the 8th day fidau prayer for Oyeweso in his hometown, Ede, Osun.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oyeweso died on Dec. 2 after a brief illness.

Until his death, Oyeweso also served as the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Osun State University.

“The passing of ‘Baapitan of Lagos’ is a huge loss to me personally. In fact, I still cannot fathom his sudden death.

‘This is a man who had a lot to offer the country, with his deep and satisfactory knowledge of history and African culture,” he said.

He described the late scholar as a bridge builder and a beacon of light who inspired young minds to stand tall and speak boldly in the native language anywhere in the world.

“We have shared years of good relationship, and he was a leader who was always willing to support and treat any matter brought before him with the urgency it deserved.

“On behalf of the 7th Governing Council, management, and the entire staff and students of The Federal Polytechnic, I commiserate with Oba Munirudeen Lawal, the Timi of Ede Land, the management, staff, and students of the Polytechnic over the loss of our former 5th and 6th members of the Governing Council,” he said.
