Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, on Monday matriculated 1,805 students across 15 faculties, 63 departments and 48 academic programmes.

Speaking at the 21st matriculation ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Haruna Ayuba, described matriculation as a significant event in the university calendar, providing a platform to promote the institutionโ€™s vision, mission, values and traditions.

He emphasised that the ceremony fostered a sense of community among students and staff while preparing new students for the academic rigours of university life.

โ€œFor the students, matriculation marks the beginning of a new chapter in your academic journey.

โ€œIt signifies your transition from secondary school to university life, where you affirm your commitment to higher education and embrace the core values and principles of Bingham University,โ€ he said.

Ayuba urged students to actively participate in lectures, abide by university rules, maintain good conduct, and imbibe biblical virtues such as honesty, integrity and respect for staff and peers.

He also encouraged students to take responsibility for the campus environment, respect green spaces, and avoid unethical behaviour, including destruction of infrastructure or involvement in riots.

The Vice-Chancellor advised students to seek help when needed from faculty deans, heads of department, level coordinators or student affairs officers.

He emphasised that the university had a robust support system in place, including chaplains and counselling services.

Guest speaker Dr Chibuzo Samuel-Son, addressing the theme โ€œLeveraging Legacies for Limitless Impact,โ€ urged matriculants to believe in themselves, embrace hard work, and remain focused in spite of distractions or setbacks.

He encouraged students to build friendships that supported their academic goals and to persist in the face of challenges.

Newly matriculated students and parents expressed joy and gratitude.

Ms Jomani Ofure of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science described her admission as a great achievement.

Mr Ayoyimika Olakunle of the Department of Medicine and Surgery encouraged aspiring undergraduates to remain focused and excel in examinations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bingham University had earlier in November graduated more than 1,116 students, with 82 achieving first-class honours. (NAN)
