Experts have on Monday, called for the adoption of smart farming practices to boost domestic production, improve food security, and reduce dependence on food imports in Nigeria.

The experts who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) from both the agribusiness as well as research points of view, said that smart farming is data-driven, and could cut reliance on food importation.

A Director on agribusiness, who works at GkO Farms, Dr Tokunbo Ajayi, said that techniques such as precision agriculture, allows farmers to optimise use of resources.

He said that these include water, fertilisers and pesticides, which all reduce waste and increase crop yields.

He also said that by utilising data analytics, farmers can make informed decisions about planting times, crop selection, and resource allocation, leading to improved productivity.

Ajayi noted that smart farming promotes sustainable agricultural practices that can enhance soil health and reduce environmental impact.

This creates a more resilient agricultural system capable of supporting local production,” he said.

The expert explained that the introduction of mobile apps and platforms, can provide farmers with critical information on market prices, weather forecasts, and best farming practices.

He said that this will enable them to make timely and informed decisions.

Similarly, Beatrice Uzochukwu, Principal Researcher at Penfield Technologies, said that smart farming can help develop more efficient supply chains, and reduce post-harvest losses by ensuring that produce reaches markets quickly.

She said that his makes local products more competitive against imports.

“The implementation of smart farming technologies often necessitates improvements in agricultural infrastructure, which can enhance overall food production capabilities across the country,’’ she said.

She said that smart farming initiatives include training programmes for farmers and equipping them with the requisite skills.

According to her, these skills are necessary to adopt new technologies, and to enhance their overall agricultural literacy. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
