The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday described the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes as the enduring seed of national unity, peace and progress.
Akpabio spoke at the Third Inter-Denominational Church Service in Abuja, marking activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
He was represented at the service by the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Peter Nwebonyi.
According to Akpabio, the blood of fallen service personnel laid a sacred foundation for Nigeria’s collective future, likening it to the blood of martyrs in Christianity.
“It is my honour to join this solemn gathering to reflect, pray and pay tribute to our gallant brothers and sisters,” he said.
He noted that Nigeria remained a nation of extraordinary diversity, united by shared values, destiny and allegiance to one flag.
Akpabio reaffirmed that the Constitution guaranteed freedom of religion, worship and conscience, describing them as pillars that must always be protected.
He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government and National Assembly remained committed to restoring Nigeria as one of Africa’s most peaceful nations.
According to him, the sacrifices being commemorated continued to strengthen national resolve to build a safer, stronger and more united country.
“The foundation we lay today will serve future generations. History will judge us not only by our words, but by our actions,” Akpabio said.
He prayed for the eternal rest of fallen heroes and sought divine protection, strength and wisdom for serving security personnel.
Akpabio thanked Nigerians for their prayers and solidarity, urging sustained national support for those safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty.
In his vote of thanks, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), expressed gratitude for continued prayers and support for the Armed Forces.
Musa described the service as a moment of worship, reflection and remembrance, assuring that the sacrifices of fallen heroes would never be forgotten.
He said the Federal Government remained committed to improving welfare, motivation and operational capacity of the armed forces.
The minister thanked the clergy, diplomats, lawmakers, service chiefs and dignitaries for standing with Nigeria.
He urged citizens to remain united and hopeful, saying, “Nobody will love Nigeria more than Nigerians themselves.”
The service attracted government officials, lawmakers, clergy, diplomats, service chiefs and worshippers from across the country.
Personnel of the armed forces, police and paramilitary agencies were present and provided adequate security throughout the event. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
