Retired AVM Sayo Olatunde, author of “Beyond the Symptoms: Tackling the Root of Nigeria’s Insecurity”, has called for a systemic approach to tackling Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
Olatunde, a former Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, made the call at the unveiling of the book on Tuesday in Abuja, stressing that addressing the underlying causes was crucial for lasting peace.
He said the recurring manifestations of insecurity indicate that Nigeria has been treating symptoms rather than the root problems.
“Plucking the leaves only gives temporary relief. To stop the problem permanently, you must uproot the tree.
“The book identifies 17 drivers of insecurity but focuses on the five most critical: corruption, sociopolitical polarisation, porous borders, defective defence architecture, and ineffective police force.
“These factors exacerbate other challenges, including the influx of weapons, foreign fighters, and illicit economic activities such as illegal mining,” he said.
Olatunde emphasised that identifying root causes is only the first step, while strong political will is essential.
“Understanding our security situation allows us to take the right steps to implement effective, sustainable solutions,” he said.
He called for systemic reform, integrity, and commitment at all levels to restore security and prosperity in Nigeria.
Olatunde said the launch and public engagement with the book reflected a shared commitment to understanding and addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Chief Benito Ozigbo, the official book launcher, commended the author for producing a timely and practical work, while praising the research behind the book.
He said the book provided actionable strategies for national security, and the launch was supported with N3 million to advance public awareness and policy discourse.
Retired Maj. Gen. Garba Wahab, former Director-General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, described the book as insightful and motivational.
Wahab, who was the book reviewer, highlighted its methodological rigour, including the use of cost-and-effect diagrams, interrelationship maps, real-option analysis, and international case studies.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the book presentation attracted the presence of several past defence and service chiefs as well as representatives of the current service chiefs alongside retired and serving officers.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, served as Chairman of the occasion, while Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, was the Special Guest of Honour at the event. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
