The Anglican Diocese of Yola has called for a partnership with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to strengthen advocacy against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Adamawa.
The GBV Desk Officer of the diocese, Ifeanyichukwu Mmaduakonam, made the call during an advocacy visit to NAN’s Yola office on Wednesday.
Mmaduakonam said the visit aimed to enhance media engagement and collaboration to address rising GBV cases in the state.
“Media organisations like NAN play a critical role in shaping public awareness and driving advocacy against gender-based violence,” he said.
He added that the diocese, under Archbishop Marcus Ibrahim, seeks a sustained partnership with NAN to tackle the menace in society.
Mmaduakonam identified factors contributing to GBV, including victims’ reluctance to speak out, lack of awareness of rights, gender inequality, weak law enforcement, and harmful cultural, religious and family practices.
He also cited alcohol and drug abuse, and lack of belief in equality of human rights, as key drivers of GBV.
“We must work collectively with religious institutions, communities and stakeholders to curb this growing menace,” he stressed.
Also speaking, team member Apeiker Iorsoo outlined strategies to end GBV, including empowering women and girls and challenging harmful social attitudes.
“To end GBV, we must educate men and boys to respect and care for women and girls, and raise awareness across churches, mosques and wider society,” he said.
Iorsoo emphasised the need for reforms in the judiciary, healthcare systems, and social support networks to better respond to GBV cases and protect victims.
He urged parents to guide their children early to prevent exposure to abuse and called on religious and community leaders to promote values that discourage violence.
Responding, NAN State Correspondent, Mrs Talatu Maiwada, appreciated the delegation for the visit and advocacy efforts.
“We commend your efforts and assure you of NAN’s readiness to collaborate through sustained media coverage to combat GBV,” Maiwada said. (NAN)
