A Zaria-based philanthropist, Ms Aisha-Ahmed Muhammad, has secured the release of seven inmates and donated food items to 100 others at the Zaria Correctional Centre as part of activities to mark her birthday.

Muhammad, who spoke to newsmen after the visit, said the donation included bags of rice, spaghetti, noodles, cooking oil, snacks and soft drinks, among other items.

She explained that the released inmates were serving terms related to minor offences, with fines not exceeding N500, 000, which she settled to facilitate their freedom.

“We cannot secure the release of inmates convicted of capital offences. Most of those we assisted were held over civil matters involving fines within our reach,” she said.

Muhammad added that the initiative was part of her ongoing humanitarian efforts and would be sustained.

She recalled that in 2025, she facilitated the release of 12 inmates, expressing optimism that more beneficiaries would be reached in the coming years. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
