The Enugu State Government and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) have partnered to establish a minimum benchmark for radiative equipment to ensure safety in health facilities across the state.
Speaking on Wednesday in Enugu at the 2026 Stakeholders’ Meeting on Radiative Safety, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, said the government prioritised safety and protection in healthcare delivery.
Ugwu said the state was reviewing radiative equipment in health facilities to ensure compliance with NNRA safety procedures, regulatory frameworks and periodic inspection standards.
He said the initiative supported ongoing investments in healthcare under Gov. Peter Mbah, emphasising that all facilities and radiographers must adhere strictly to NNRA guidelines and safety standards.
The commissioner said that the 300-bed international hospital nearing completion had already received advanced medical equipment, which passed NNRA inspection and certification for use.
The Director-General of NNRA, Dr Yau Idris, commended the state for strengthening healthcare safety and ensuring quality standards were not compromised in service delivery.
Represented by the NNRA South-East Zonal Coordinator, Rev. Sis. Chioma Nwankwo, he said the agency remained committed to protecting Nigerians from harmful ionising radiation.
He said that radiation technology was essential in modern medicine, including cancer radiotherapy, but required strict safety compliance and responsible use.
Idris called for stronger regulatory compliance, continuous training, workforce development and integration of radiation protection into overall healthcare quality systems nationwide.
He added that safe and effective use of radiative equipment was a shared responsibility among regulators, health workers, patients and facility managers.
Presentations at the meeting focused on NNRA mandates, radiation protection in medicine and authorisation procedures for safe use of radiative equipment.
Radiographers from public, private, mission and government-owned facilities pledged to uphold NNRA safety standards in their daily clinical practice.
The meeting was organised by the Enugu State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the NNRA.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
