The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has urged Nigerian children and youths to embrace reading for self-development and national growth.

Anunobi made the call in a goodwill message to commemorate the 2026 Children’s Day celebration in Abuja.

She described reading as a vital tool for knowledge acquisition, critical thinking and empowerment, urging young Nigerians to cultivate the habit as a pathway to a brighter future.

“Reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity and leadership.

“When you read, you equip yourself with the ideas, skills and confidence to shape your future and contribute meaningfully to the country.

“Let this Children’s Day remind us that every great leader, inventor, and changemaker started with a book,” she said.

The national librarian said the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu and the education initiatives of the Minister of Education were expanding opportunities for formal and non-formal learning across the country.

According to her, the policies are aimed at ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to quality education, irrespective of background or location.

Anunobi encouraged children and youths to take advantage of the facilities and programmes of the National Library of Nigeria, including its book clubs, literacy centres and digital resources.

She also urged them to read materials on Nigeria’s history, culture, languages and achievements to better understand the nation’s heritage.

“The National Library of Nigeria remains committed to promoting reading culture and lifelong learning across the country.

“Through our centres and digital platforms, we are bringing books, knowledge, and opportunities closer to you.

“I urge you to visit us, join a book club, and read widely, especially Nigerian content that tells your story,” she added.

Anunobi reaffirmed the commitment of the National Library of Nigeria to promoting literacy and lifelong learning in line with national development goals and its 2025-2030 strategic plan. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
