The legislative arm of Kaura Local Government Council in Kaduna State, has held a public hearing on peace and security bye-law, sponsored by Jehosaphat Abba, a councillor representing Kpak Ward.
The bill tagged “Security and Peace bill” was presented for public hearing on Thursday during a town hall meeting, preparatory for passage into a bye-law in the local government area.
The legislative arm of the local government came up with the bill in a renewed attempt to enhance security and promote peace through the regulation of activities of farmers, herders and other residents of the area.
Speaking during the public hearing, Mr Obadiah Sankyai, the Chairman of the local government council, thanked the legislative arm for the initiative, describing it as a bold step towards minimising conflicts, especially those that are farmer/herder related.
The Chairman said the bill, if passed into law, will not only pave the way for meaningful development, but will also guarantee harmonious coexistence among the diverse people of the area.
While emphasizing that it was incumbent on all citizens to respect the laws of the land, Sankyai warned that anyone who breaks the law will be severely dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the law.
In his remark, Jerry Suku, the Speaker of the legislative arm, said the bill was well intended as it will ensure justice, development and peaceful co-existence.
Suku emphasised that the bill does not target any particular resident of the local government area, irrespective of ethnic group or religious affiliation, rather, it was wholeheartedly meant to promote and maintain peace.
Adding their royal blessings to the event, the paramount rulers in the local government area comprising the Chiefs of Kagoro, Moro’a and Takad assured their unalloyed support to the law when eventually passed. (NAN)
