Magistrate orders man to sweep court premises for stealing phone

Senior Magistrate Evelyn Dara of a Dutse Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered an unemployed man, Usman Mohammed to sweep the court premises for one day for  stealing a cellphone.

Dara, gave the order following a guilty plea entered by Mohammed after his arraignment by the police.

The senior magistrate held that she gave Mohammed a non-custodial sentence because he pleaded guilty.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Otobha Okpa informed the court that Mr Abdulrahman Mohammed reported the matter at the Tungamaje Divisional Police Headquarters, Abuja.

Okpa said that on July 1, Mohammed broke into the complainant’s parked truck and stole his Samsung Mobile phone worth N 250,000.

He said that during investigation and interrogation, Mohammed could not give a satisfactory account of his actions.

The offence, the police said, contravened the provisions of Section 288 of the Penal Code Law.(NAN)(www.nannews.com.ng)
