The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Lagos State Chapter, has urged stakeholders in the construction industry to embrace digital technologies and strengthen professional supervision to curb building failures.
Mr Rasheed Owolabi, Chairman, NIOB Lagos State Chapter, made the call at a news briefing in Lagos ahead of the 2026 Lagos Builders’ Conference and Annual General Meeting.
Owolabi said the rapid transformation of the construction industry made it imperative for professionals to deploy technology in project procurement, monitoring, control and quality management.
He said technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), drones, digital documentation and remote monitoring systems could improve construction processes and project delivery.
“Technology alone does not guarantee a successful project.
“Smart construction must be matched with professional competence, effective supervision, proper quality management, regulatory compliance and accountability,” he said.
The chairman said the conference with the theme, “Smart Building Processes in the Digital Age: Procurement, Monitoring, Control and Quality Management for Sustainable Construction”, would examine practical ways of improving construction delivery.
He said discussions would focus on how digital systems could enhance transparency and accountability in procurement, provide better visibility of construction progress and strengthen cost and project management.
Owolabi said technology should support quality assurance and control while ensuring that professional judgement and responsibility remained central to construction delivery.
He stressed that engaging qualified and registered professionals was an investment in the safety, quality and integrity of buildings.
He advised developers, property owners and members of the public to engage appropriately qualified professionals, particularly registered builders, in building production and construction management.
“Our message remains simple: Be Wise, Build Right, Engage a Registered Builder,” he said.
Owolabi said NIOB Lagos would continue to engage government agencies, regulators, professional bodies, developers and other stakeholders to improve building production and construction standards in the state.
He called for greater collaboration among government, regulators, professionals, developers, technology providers and academia to promote safe, transparent and sustainable construction practices.
He said the conference would provide an opportunity to develop practical responses to challenges confronting the industry and ensure that technology enhances professionalism rather than replace it.
