The experience of BRICS countries can help shape a unified sustainable development agenda beyond 2030, a Russian official has said.
Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organisations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said this during the BRICS Dialogue programme.
Logvinov said Russia had recorded progress in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He said extreme poverty had been eradicated, while the share of the population experiencing food shortages had been reduced to zero.
According to him, mortality among children under five decreased by 33.8 per cent between 2015 and 2023.
He also said 100 per cent of the Russian population had access to electricity, while 99.5 per cent used clean fuels and technologies.
“Thanks to the experience accumulated in the Russian Federation, in other countries of the group and by the group as a whole, we are now able to shape a unifying agenda.
“After 2030, we need to think about what comes next.
“Our experience can serve as a catalyst for developing approaches to what we will do after 2030,” he said.
The official said energy cooperation was another area where BRICS countries were developing common approaches.
He recalled that in 2024, during Russia’s BRICS Chair ship, member countries formulated common approaches to a just energy transition through the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform.
Logvinov said Russia was sharing energy technologies with BRICS partners, citing the design and modernisation of hydropower plants in India, Indonesia and Ethiopia.
He added that Russian nuclear technologies were being used in China, India, Egypt and Iran, with new projects planned in Ethiopia and Indonesia.
“These are not simply isolated projects; they are part of systematic work based on the understanding that this energy transition must work for people,” he said.
Logvinov also cited some Russian programmes aimed at supporting the SDGs.
They include the national project “Family”, indexation of maternity capital and extension of the family mortgage programme.
He said a concept extending to 2030 had been approved for persons with disabilities, with the employment rate among them expected to reach 75 per cent.
He added that the “Infrastructure for Life” project covered 2,000 settlements where living conditions were being improved.
The official said the UN remained an important platform for exchanging development experiences.
He noted that Russia participated in international conferences on development financing, including the Monterrey Consensus, Addis Ababa Action Agenda and Sevilla Commitment.
Logvinov described BRICS countries as likeminded partners in implementing the SDGs.
