Sen. Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct credible elections that will reflect the will of Nigerians in the 2027 General Elections.

Kingibe currently with the African Democratic Congress, made the appeal in a statement issued by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Kennedy Mbele, on Wednesday in Abuja, to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.

She congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on the nation’s 66th Independence anniversary, thanking God for preserving Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty.

Kingibe noted that Oct. 1 symbolised the freedom, sacrifice and resilience of Nigeria’s founding fathers, stressing that their efforts must not be allowed to become futile.

The lawmaker urged Nigerians to reflect on the state of democracy, stressing that independence remained meaningless without citizens being able to freely choose their leaders peacefully, fairly and credibly.

She appealed to INEC to be truly independent in both action and name by conducting the 2027 General Elections in a manner that reflected the will of the people.

Kingibe also appealed to security agencies, political leaders, the electorate and youths to play their respective constitutional roles during elections, noting that the world was watching Nigeria.

She reaffirmed her commitment to quality representation and legislation aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system, while remaining a voice for the voiceless in the Senate.(NAN)
