The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, on Friday inducted its first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students in Leadership and Governance, and Policy and Strategic Studies.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), reports that the institution’s President, Prof. Azikiwe Onwualu, in a speech at the ceremony, described the induction as “more than the beginning of a new academic session”.
“It is a defining moment in the evolution of the university and a historic occasion.
“The university is not simply welcoming students into doctoral programmes; it is launching a new platform for scholarship that seeks to shape leadership, strengthen institutions and contribute meaningfully to national development and Africa’s transformation,” he said.
He acknowledged that the institution had a strong reputation for excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but that it also recognised that scientific and technological advancement required sound governance to reach its full potential.
“Innovations need to be supported by visionary leadership, sound governance, evidence-based public policy and innovative business decisions.
“Nations are transformed not only by innovation, but also by the quality of leadership that guides institutions and the policies that shape societies,” he said.
According to him, the establishment of the doctoral programmes reflected commitment to producing scholars whose research will extend beyond academic journals to influence governments, organisations, communities and the private sector.
“Our vision is to develop graduates who will not only generate knowledge, but also apply that knowledge to solve complex societal challenges.
“AUST seeks to be a globally recognised research university where multidisciplinary scholarship addresses Africa’s most pressing challenges while contributing to global knowledge.
These programmes represent another significant step towards that vision,” he said
Onwualu congratulated the doctoral students and tasked them to give their all, noting that PhD wasn’t just an academic qualification, but a commitment to lifelong inquiry, intellectual discipline and service to humanity.
“As the first cohort, you are pioneers; your achievements will establish the standards upon which these courses will be judged for many years to come.
“Future students will look back at your contributions as the foundation upon which this academic community was built. That is both an honour and a responsibility.
“The world today faces increasingly complex challenges, so questions of governance, public accountability, economic development, security, institutional effectiveness and social justice require leaders who can think critically.
“It needs leaders who can conduct rigorous research and formulate practical solutions. We expect that your work here at AUST will contribute meaningfully to these conversations and help shape policies that improve lives,” he said.
He urged the candidates to embrace curiosity, resilience, integrity and the courage to challenge established ideas in pursuit of better ones throughout their academic journey.
Onwualu also encouraged them to take full advantage of the faculty, research opportunities and collaborative environment the institution would offer.
“Build strong relationships with your supervisors, engage actively with your colleagues, remain open to new perspectives and let your research be driven by relevance, excellence and impact,” he said.
NAN reports that the ceremony featured an inaugural lecture by the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Oladimeji Bankole.
The theme of the lecture was “Strategic Leadership: My Personal Experience”. (NAN)
