Former Governor of Nasarawa State, Sen. Tanko Al-Makura, has pledged to uphold the legacy of the late Chief Solomon Lar.

Al-Makura stated this when the Central Planning Committee of the Solomon and Mary Lar Leadership Institute visited him on Tuesday in Abuja.

He commended the establishment of the institute, describing it as an important initiative to preserve the legacies, values and leadership ideals of the late Lar.

The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Committee, a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr Bimbo Daramola.

Al-Makura described Lar as a progressive political leader who demonstrated unwavering commitment to national unity, good governance and the indivisibility of Nigeria, not through words but through practical actions.

According to him, Lar was among the early political leaders who recognised the importance of alliances and cooperation across political divides.

He recounted how Lar’s fatherly guidance and generosity of spirit influenced his political journey, particularly during a challenging period when he faced difficulties securing the opportunity to participate in a party primary.

Al-Makura explained that he had considered seeking legal redress over what he regarded as an injustice at the time.

“However, Lar counselled me against taking the matter to court or making public statements, encouraging me instead to remain calm and explore other political opportunities,” he said.

He said the advice demonstrated Lar’s uncommon wisdom, patience and commitment to nurturing younger political leaders, adding that he would remain grateful for the late statesman’s guidance and support.

Al-Makura said the establishment of the institute would help preserve those exemplary leadership values and ensure that future generations learned from the lives and public service of the late Lar and his wife.

He pledged to continue to support the ideals championed by Lar, stressing that although he had passed on, his legacy remained alive through those who embraced his principles and continued his work.

The former governor reaffirmed the importance of keeping alive the values of unity, inclusiveness, selfless service and good governance associated with the late Lar.

He expressed optimism that the institute would provide a platform for promoting the ideals across Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit forms part of the Central Planning Committee’s engagement with key political leaders and stakeholders ahead of the formal inauguration of the institute.

The initiative is dedicated to preserving the enduring contributions of the late Lar and his wife, Mary Lar, to leadership and national development.(NAN)
