The Nigerian Army has charged young soldiers of the 90 Regular Recruit Intake to uphold discipline, professionalism and training standards in their military careers.
The Chief of Training (Army), Maj.-Gen. Valentine Okoro, gave the charge on Friday at the closing ceremony of Exercise Shining Star Course 12/2026 in Abuja.
Okoro, represented by the Deputy Chief of Training, Linkages and Integration, Brig.-Gen. Igbokwe Ukaegbu, said training remained critical to preparing soldiers for contemporary security challenges.
He said the exercise provided a vital transition from basic training to unit life by allowing the young soldiers to consolidate their skills in realistic field conditions.
According to him, the exercise tested teamwork, leadership, endurance, initiative and decision-making, while strengthening discipline, regimentation and collective responsibility.
“The standard you maintain in peace will largely determine your effectiveness in operations,” Okoro said.
He urged commanders to sustain progressive training and mentorship, address identified weaknesses through continuation training and document lessons learnt for future improvement.
The Chief of Training tasked the soldiers to remain physically fit, mentally alert and professionally competent, while demonstrating loyalty to constituted authority.
He also urged them to uphold discipline, courage, integrity and respect for human rights, stressing that their conduct on and off duty would shape public confidence in the Army.
Okoro said the contemporary security environment required soldiers who were adaptable, resilient and proficient in the use of weapons and military equipment.
Earlier, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Maj.-Gen. John Lar, said the eight-week exercise was designed to enhance the professional knowledge and practical competence of the young soldiers.
Lar said the programme combined classroom instruction with practical exercises to prepare the soldiers for effective service in their respective units.
He urged the participants to apply the knowledge acquired with discipline, dedication, initiative and a strong sense of responsibility.
The commander said the Army remained committed to providing relevant and quality training in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s philosophy of building a professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force.
The exercise, which commenced on July 27, ended on Sept. 18 with the participation of young soldiers from the 90 Regular Recruit Intake.(NAN)
