2023: Group tasks INEC on fairness to political parties

By Emmanuel Oloniruha

The Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts (ASSPT) has tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be fair to all political parties ahead of 2023 general elections.

The Director of the School, Dr Sam Amadi, made the call at a news conference in Abuja, on Tuesday while speaking on the uploading of party agents for the Feb. 25 presidential election.

Amadi urged INEC to work hard and simplify its digital processes to enable efficient and timely upload of Polling Units (PUs) agents by political parties.

He equally advised the commission to factor the interests and challenges faced by the less established political parties in managing its deadlines.

Amadi said from the group’s interactions with some of the parties “outside the major ones, namely the Peoples Democratic Party, the All Progressives Congress, the Labour Party and the New Nigeria People’sParty” the feedbacks were not encouraging.

“We receive reports of difficulty in uploading party agents including difficulty of using the INEC’s portal and the number of PUs to be uploaded.

“Some of the officials of these parties informed us that INEC official did not notify them that their method will only provide online forms suitable for self-service and not for enterprise use cases.

“Some of them have also complained that the tasks requires more time that INEC allocates.

“Some of these party officials are requesting INEC to adopt the Enterprise Data Upload Method which will be easier and faster to enable them to quickly upload their agents.

“And this will enable them be in a position to monitor and defend their votes, especially in the presidential and governorship elections where incentives for rigging and manipulations may be high.

“INEC should recognise the comparative disadvantage of the less established parties and grant them amply opportunity to meet the deadline.

“If INEC is not able to be flexible with its system to enable smooth upload, then it should, within its conveniences and schedule, consider to extend the deadline.

“This will enable effective participation by the less established parties, outside the Big Four to ensure fair participation in competitive election, “ Amadi explained.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the school at the event launched a 2023 Election Observatory to monitor, analyse and provide solutions to issues that would affect the credibility and fairness of the elections.

Amadi said the gesture became necessary in order to help the INEC with necessary information in its preparations towards a credible exercise.

He said, “the objective of the observatory is to offer an independent analysis of the challenges of free and fair election to INEC as the country approaches its general elections.

“We believe that the most important aspect of the electoral process is not the actual voting, but actions taken by the electoral management body to make voting free and fair.

“We are not engaged in election monitoring but rather in observing and analysing the processes and procedures that guarantee fairness and credibility of voting and declaration of results.

“To this end, we will be having weekly press briefings to highlight challenges and offer solutions to ensure the conduct of the 2023 elections remain free, fair and credible.”

The school urged INEC to ensure that all eligible registered voters collect their Permanent Voter Cards(PVCs) before the election dates to avoid disenfranchisement.

He explained that the logistics could be overwhelming for the institutions, adding that the election is a crucial one and its competitiveness requires more transparency and accountability than in the past.

He commended INEC for the decision to use its staff to conduct the election rather than academics outside its control.

“By establishing a committee of its senior management and taking ownership of the process, INEC is proving that it is learning from the failures of the past and is determined to conduct more efficient and reliable elections in 2023.

“This decision underlines a recognition of the needs to standardise the procedures and processes of the elections.

“This is more so as the returning officers make decisions that at times are arbitrary and capricious to undermine the fairness of electoral outcomes,” he said.

Mr Kenneth Eze of Speak Out Africa Initiative, urged INEC to put measures in place for all eligible registered voters, especially students who were now back to their various schools, get their voting PVCs.

“We all know that when the Continuous Voter Registration was conducted, Nigeria students were home due to eight months strike declared by ASUU.

“Today, as we are talking PVCs distributoon and collection, these same largest decision making constituency are currently back in their school busy with their studies.

“Its unfortunate and I am calling the attention of INEC. There is no way they will be in school and still collect their PVCs which they did at home.

“Youth population is over 26 million as we were told by INEC and they must be part of determining who governance us in the next four years, “he said.

He urged the Federal Government to declare public holiday for students for one week and mandate ASUU, Nigeria University Commission (NUC) and stakeholders in education sector to suspend every activity during this one week break.

Oh his part, Mr Law Mefor, fellow of the school, urged INEC to improve its delivery system and overcome some of the managerial shortcomings recorded in the past weeks.

He said some of these suggestions were made to provide fair and effective participation in INEC process and to avert litigations that might damage the credibility of the entire process. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Thriving during global turbulent times: UK top consultant advises leaders

97 total views today

Dr Alim Abubakre

By Razak Owolabi

Dr Alim Abubakre, founder of TEXEM UK, has advised government and private sector leaders to support the mental well-being of their workers to survive the present global turbulent times.

Abubakre, a university don in the UK, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, added that people used to think that COVID-19 was the worst crisis the world ever faced.

He said that surprisingly enough, even before the effects of COVID-19 were over, political instability worldwide began.

Abubakre said the Russia-Ukraine war had affected supply chains worldwide, and there seems to be no relief soon, saying the effects have severe effects on the global economy.

“Following the sharp slowdown in 2022, various international bodies have warned that there could be a recession in 2023.

“Indeed, in October 2022, the International Monetary Fund warned that the global economy’s growth would fall by 2.7 per cent in 2023.

“As a leader, whether in government or the private sector, you have a unique role in inspiring confidence, even during times of turbulence,” he said.

Abubakre said that there were signs that the projected global economic recession was beginning to bite.

He said organisational models could only succeed with effective strategic leadership during hard times.

Abubakre said while some effects were inevitable, leaders could prepare for the uncertain future and find a way to sail through the tough times.

He said one of the strategies through which leaders could survive turbulent times was to embrace innovation and adopt innovative practices.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, organisations that innovated quickly thrived, while those that did not, cease to exist.

“Chinese scientists sequenced the COVID virus in just three weeks. The UK’s National Health Service constructed a 4,000-bed capacity hospital within four days,” Abubakre said.

According to him, innovation should be embraced during and after a crisis to increase the chances of survival of an organisation.

“If you can sustain the same efforts over time, even after a crisis, you are sure of growth and top performance,” Abubakre

said.

He said another strategy was ensuring good mental health for leaders and employees, as

working and living in times of uncertainty creates anxiety, depression, burnout and other mental-health-related issues.

“All these eventually affect performance, and it gets even worse when there are crises and volatilities in the market.

“As a leader, you are responsible for supporting activities that promote good mental well-being for everyone.

“One way to do so is to create initiatives and efforts that help reduce the effects of issues related to mental health,”

Abubakre said.

He said one of the best initiatives leaders could try concerning mental health was, availing counselling to everyone and ensuring leaders and employees had support when needed.

Abubakre said leaders should create platforms for sharing experiences where employees could share their activities or engage in sessions that help bring people together.

He also urged leaders to de-stigmatise mental health by establishing various programmes to help achieve such goals in their organisations.

“The idea here is to create a community of support.

Notably, supporting mental health and wellness is a game changer.

“It separates organisations that thrive from those that suffer losses and stagnation, especially during crises.

“Moreover, unlike other challenges that affect organisations, mental wellness directly affects performance,” Abubakre

said.

He advised leaders to communicate effectively, saying proper communication plays a very vital role during times of uncertainty.

Abubakre said communication enables organisations to function effectively despite disruptive events and risks.

“People want information, and whether good or bad, you need to ensure it gets to the right people on time using the right platform,” he said.

Abubakre called on leaders to emphasise purpose and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by

contributing to the communities and societies where their profits come from, as this is one way to win during turbulent times.

“It is a move that creates a beneficial cycle that will help your organisation to remain afloat even during crisis times.

“Note, however, that CSR is not just about giving to the community near your organisation.

“Your moves must be relevant and help tackle social issues, environmental hazards, governance issues and others,” he said.

Abubakre said leaders must be strategic to succeed in these turbulent times.

“So, how do you survive all these and steer your organisation successfully even during such turbulent times?

“You need to be more deliberate about the choices (e.g., around intrapreneurship, internationalisation, acquisitions and alliances) that you make.

“And the actions (e.g., processes, practice and leadership style) that you take to position (e.g. around; culture, resources, macro-environment and engaging stakeholders) of your organisation for enduring success,” he said.

Abubakre told leaders to let their strategy-making be a continuous process which entails deliberately choosing a distinct set of activities and- is responsive to changing times to deliver a unique mix of value.

He said this is what progressive and top five companies such as Amazon, Walmart and Apple all have in common.

Dr Alim Abubakre is on the advisory board of the London Business School Africa Club. He is the non-executive chair of These Executive Minds (TEXEM, wwww.texem.co.uk), an organisation he founded that has trained over 4,000 executives across multiple continents.

He is a Senior Lecturer in International Business at Sheffield Business School (An AACSB accredited Business School) at Sheffield Hallam University.

Sheffield Hallam was named the University of the Year for Teaching Quality by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.

WHO backs mask-wearing on long flights amid U.S. spread of Omicron variant

83 total views today

World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday advised that countries should consider recommending passengers wear masks on long haul flights.

WHO said this was to counter the latest Omicron sub variant of COVID-19 given its rapid spread in the U.S.

In a news conference in Europe, WHO officials said the XBB.1.5 sub variant is being detected in small but growing numbers.

WHO’s senior emergency officer for Europe, Catherine Smallwood, said passengers should be recommended to wear masks in high-risk settings such as long-haul flights.

“This should be a recommendation issued to passengers arriving from anywhere where there is widespread COVID-19 transmission.’’

U.S. health officials however said that the XBB.1.5 sub-variant, the most transmissible Omicron sub-variant that has been detected so far accounted for 27.6 per cent of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. for the week ending Jan. 7.

However, experts said it remains unclear if XBB.1.5 will cause its own wave of infections around the world.

She said the current vaccines continue to protect against severe symptoms, hospitalisation and death.

Smallwoood noted that “countries need to look at the evidence base for pre-departure testing” saying it was crucial to not be “blindsided” by an exclusive focus on one particular geographic area.

She said if travel measures are considered “our opinion is that travel measures should be implemented in a non-discriminatory manner.”

She added that it did not mean the agency recommends the testing of passengers coming from the United States at this stage.

Measures that can be taken include genomic surveillance, and targeting passengers arriving from other countries as long as it not diverts resources away from the domestic surveillance systems.

Other examples include wastewater monitoring systems that can look at wastewater around points of entry such as airports.

XBB.1.5 is yet another descendant of Omicron, the most contagious variant of the virus causing COVID-19 that is now globally dominant.

It is an offshoot of XBB, first detected in October, which is itself a recombinant of two other Omicron sub-variants. (Reuters/NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Gov. Akeredolu

By Segun Giwa

Ondo State Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Akinterinwa, has commended journalists and media organisations in the state for their support for the administration of Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Akinterinwa said this on Tuesday in Akure when the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ondo Council led by the Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

He thanked the council for acknowledging the work of the present government, saying “because it is not easy for journalists to openly acknowledge good work of someone; but seeing is believing”.

According to him, government has done a lot in the areas of infrastructure and security across the state, with Amotekun becoming the major legacy in the state.

“Gov. Akeredolu has allowed us to display a little bit of our professionalism based on the assignment given to us.

“I will say that I am glad and happy to be serving under him because he has allowed me to continue to express myself with his guidance and advice.

“He has appointed and allowed me to work and he has shared his visions with us all in such a manner that we have to key into the vision and that has helped some of us.

“So whatever contributions we have made in this ministry of finance, it is because we have a boss who has given us free hand to work.

“You must also find a balance in funding the needs of populace and the projects of the government which will impact on everyone across the state.

“I want to appreciate what you (the media) have done for this government, the peace and the positive media review we get, it is what you put out there,” he said.

Akinterinwa promised to support whatever would enhance the practice of Journalism in Ondo State, especially as it concerns the need of Ondo NUJ.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Jide Ekpobomini, who described Journalism as a noble profession, urged practitioners to sustain their unflinching support for the present administration in the state.

Earlier, Adegbite said the purpose of the visit was to let the ministry know that journalists in the state would continue to be fair to all stakeholders in their various reports.

Adegbite applauded roles played by the commissioner in the present administration’s timely payment of gratuities of Owena Press (The Hope Newspaper) retired staff.

“We are also here to acknowledge Mr Governor for what he has been doing for media practitioners and houses in the state, and you can always count on our support.

“Ondo State Government has been enjoying positive reportage since the beginning of this present administration.

“We should also commend the giant strides of the governor.

“Akeredolu has provided adequate security for the lives and property through the state security network agency, ‘Amotekun’ alongside with others security agencies and provision of infrastructure for the masses.

“We want to assure you that the support we have been giving this government will continue, because the governor as our grand patron is also showing our colleagues love in some ways,” he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
