In a groundbreaking development, a woman in Britain has given birth following a womb transplant, marking a significant milestone in reproductive medicine.

Grace Davidson, 36, from southern England, who was born without a functioning womb, became the first woman in the UK to receive a womb transplant in early 2023.

Her sister, Amy, donated her womb as part of the Womb Transplant UK living donor programme.

Grace underwent the transplant at the Oxford Transplant Centre and subsequently received in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment at HCA UK’s Lister Fertility Clinic.

After close monitoring at the Churchill Hospital and Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in London, Grace delivered a healthy baby girl via caesarean section in February 2025. Both mother and baby are doing well.

Grace and her partner, Angus, named their daughter Amy Isabel, in honour of her sister Amy and Miss Isabel Quiroga, who co-led the transplant operation.

The birth represents a remarkable achievement in reproductive medicine, with more than 100 womb transplants carried out globally and more than 50 healthy babies born from the procedure.

Dr Ippokratis Sarris, a consultant in reproductive medicine, hailed the birth as an extraordinary advance in science and care.

Though the procedure remained suitable for only a small number of women, it offered hope to those unable to conceive or carry their own children, such as those born without a viable womb or who lose their wombs due to cancer or other conditions.

Womb Transplant UK, the charity behind the living donor programme, continues to fund research and transplant operations, with plans to help more women in the future.

The charity is supported by public donations, which help cover the costs of the transplant surgeries and related research. (Xinhua/NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Foundation has begun free cataract treatments for no fewer than 1,000 residents of Bayelsa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the foundation has earlier carried out a screening exercise during which people were diagnosed with cataract and profiled for treatment.

The free surgery is taking place at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa and the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri.

Mrs Emmanuela Arukwe, the Managing Director, NNPC Foundation, said that the intervention was the foundation’s way of supporting people with visual challenges.

Represented by the Manager, Healthcare Programme, Jude Ayalogu, Arukwe said that the exercise was a nationwide programme targeted to treat 6,000 cataract patients across the six geo-political zones.

She said that WHO reports had shown that cataract remained one of the leading causes of blindness globally.

“According to WHO, nearly 50 per cent of blindness cases in Nigeria are caused by cataracts.

“In rural and underserved areas, limited access to quality eye care exacerbates this challenge, many individuals live with avoidable blindness.

“Visual challenge is not only a health issue, it is a social and economic crisis. Loss of vision negatively impacts on productivity, independence, and overall quality of life.

“At NNPC Foundation, we recognise that sight is more than just a sense, it is a fundamental pillar for human dignity and opportunity.

“This is the understanding that forms the foundation for our outreach programmes,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr James Omietimi, the Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, stated that cataract was a leading cause of reversible blindness, prevalent among the aged.

Omietimi urged members of the public to take advantage of the opportunity provided by NNPC Foundation to access free cataract screening and extraction.

Omietimi commended the foundation for the gesture, describing it as a huge relief to many families.

“Surgery for the cataract at public hospitals costs between N100,000 and N150,000 while private health centres charge more than N300,000,” he said.

Prof. Seiyefa Brisine, the Bayelsa Commissioner for Health, described the gesture as a good omen to the health of the citizenry.

He urged other stakeholders to borrow a leaf from the NNPCL Foundation by organising similar health intervention programmes.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Highness Opokuni, a 60-year-old man, said he had suffered cataract for two years, and that the condition had affected him emotionally and economically.

He thanked the foundation for the gesture, describing it as a lifeline for families that cannot afford the cost of cataract surgery. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) and the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to combat malaria and strengthen diagnostic capacity.

The Registrar of the council, Prof. Tosan Erhabor, made this known in Abuja on Monday when the two bodies signed the accord.

He said that the MoU signified a major step forward in the shared mission to combat malaria and strengthen diagnostic capacity across the country.

He added that “today, we are not just signing a document, we are formalising a partnership that speaks to the very heart of public health — collaboration, innovation, and capacity building.

“This MoU provides the framework for establishing a Training Laboratory for Malaria Microscopy at the MLSCN Public Health Laboratory in Abuja, using forty-two (42) state-of-the-art teaching microscopes generously provided by NMEP under the Global Fund Grant Cycle 7 (GC-7).

“This initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when institutions align their strengths.

“While NMEP brings national coordination, resources and focus on malaria elimination, MLSCN will provide regulatory oversight, technical expertise and commitment to maintaining high standards in laboratory diagnostics.”

The registrar said that together, the two bodies would lay the groundwork for sustainable training platform that would empower laboratory scientists with the skills needed for accurate malaria diagnosis.

“As we sign this agreement, I wish to assure you that MLSCN is fully committed to upholding responsibilities under this MoU,” he added.

In her speech, Mrs Nnenna Ogrulafor, the National Coordinator of NMEP, said
malaria remained one of the leading public health challenges in Nigeria.

Ogrulafor said that malaria is not only the source of increase in morbidity and mortality in the country, but also hindering economic progress and development.

According to her, recent rates, particularly in vulnerability statistics, reveal that the country is still grappling with high prevalence rates, especially among children and pregnant women.

“It is, therefore, imperative that we strengthen our capacities, enhance diagnostic capabilities and later innovation in our approach to malaria prevention.

“The establishment of a dedicated malaria training laboratory is part of our intervention strategies.

“The laboratory will serve as a hub for training for the private and public sector and research toward equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement effective malaria diagnostic methodologies.

“By investing in human capital and technical expertise, we are laying the groundwork for sustainable malaria elimination efforts,” she stressed.

According to her, the partnership will facilitate the development of standardised laboratory protocols, promote quality assurance in malaria diagnostics and enhance overall reliability of laboratory services. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says his government is committed to improving trade routes towards enhancing regional connectivity.

Makinde stated this on Monday at the opening of the Oyo State International Trade Fair, tagged ‘EXPOYO 2025, holding at the Trade Fair Complex, Samonda, Ibadan.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Mr Bayo Lawal, said such efforts would make Oyo State the preferred destination for investment and trade.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the fair is: “Achieving Food Security and Economic Stability in Oyo State through Massive Investment in Agriculture”.

According to the governor, the theme of the fair encapsulates the vision of his administration, which seeks to make the state the fastest growing economy in Nigeria.

He explained that ‘EXPOYO 2025’ was designed to serve as a forum for investors and business minds to explore new opportunities and collaborate in advancing trade activities in the state.

Makinde said that the trade fair was also a unique opportunity for local entrepreneurs to gain exposure, build networks and access the global market.

He explained that the effort of his government to create an enabling environment for businesses were reflected in the ongoing improvements in critical sectors like transportation, energy, agriculture and technology.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise policies and programmes that foster entrepreneurship and provide our youth with opportunities to create sustainable businesses and jobs,” he assured.

The governor further reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to continue creating the right environment for businesses to grow, thrive and make a lasting impact on the state.

He urged local and international exhibitors at the trade fair to make the most of the opportunity to showcase their products, build meaningful connections and explore new avenues for collaboration.

In his goodwill message, Dr Daniel Gbadero, the President of the Oyo State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (OYCCIMA), said that agriculture must be rescued from subsistence farming.

According to Gbadero, food security and economic stability could only be achieved when hard and difficult farm labours are replaced with agricultural tools and machines.

He said that the replacement would make agribusiness more appealing and attractive to youths.

The OYCCIMA president commended the state government for making the trade fair an annual event, saying that the fair would put “our products on display to expose them to the world.”

He equally said that the fair would promote the sales of Oyo-made products towards developing the state economy. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday clarified that Nigeria is not on the list of countries facing an entry ban into Saudi Arabia from April 13.

Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar issued the clarification through his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir.

The minister said Saudi authorities have officially confirmed that the viral memo suggesting Nigeria’s inclusion in the ban list is false.

He called the document, which named Nigeria, Egypt, India, Pakistan and others as banned, misleading and inaccurate.

“The Saudi Tourism Centre confirmed no such directive exists. Current official travel guidelines only apply to the Hajj pilgrimage.

“To clarify, the only restriction concerns tourist visa holders during the Hajj period,” Tuggar said.

Holders of tourist visas cannot perform Hajj, enter or remain in Makkah between April 29 and June 11 (01 Thul Quda to 14 Thul Hijjah 1446 AH).

“The Hajj visa remains the only valid entry permit for pilgrims during that time,” the minister stressed.

Tuggar advised the public to ignore the misleading memo and confirm travel details through official sources before making plans.

“Sharing unverified information causes confusion and may affect travel arrangements,” he warned.

“For accurate updates, travellers should consult official Saudi sources, the Nigerian Foreign Ministry, or recognised diplomatic channels,” he added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

FCTA working to reduce maternal, infant mortality – Secretary

FCTA working to reduce maternal, infant mortality – Secretary

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) says it has taken steps toward reducing indices of maternal and child mortality in the territory.

Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, FCTA, stated this during the inauguration of the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives (MAMII) programme in Abuja on Monday.

The inauguration of the MAMII programme was part of activities to commemorate the 2025 World Health Day, with the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.”

Fasawe, who said that maternal and child mortality are majorly due to complications at childbirth, said that the FCT Administration introduced health insurance cover for pregnant women and their newborn to curb mortality.

This, she said, was in line with the administration’s zero tolerance to maternal and infant mortality.

She added that there were also specific programmes that the Federal Government had put in place toward addressing not only the health of the populace, but also for pregnant women and newborn.

According to her, the measure will ensure timely and proper healthcare for pregnant mothers and newborn.

She said “it is a policy of this administration that when a woman has health insurance, her pregnancy and delivery would be covered by the insurance policy.

“In addition, the baby, when delivered, is entitled to a health insurance cover in the first year of his/her life.

“In simple English, delivery is free, and childcare is free.”

She said that the FCTA had set up a health insurance desk in all its facilities and urged pregnant women to register to access free health services.

Fasawe added that the MAMII programme was also organised to educate pregnant women on what President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda has put in place to reduce maternal and newborn mortality.

She explained that the 2025 theme means a new and bright beginning for pregnant women and a hopeful future for the kids they would give birth to.

Dr Dayo Adeyanju, the National Coordinator of the MAMII programme, said all pregnancies must be well taken care of to achieve healthy beginning under the programme.

Adeyanju added that children must live beyond five years to ensure a hopeful future.

He said, “President Bola Tinubu has directed the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, to ensure every pregnancy translates to a healthy baby.”

According to him, there is no reason why pregnancy should be a death sentence.

He explained that the MAMII programme is to counter delays that lead to maternal death, either delay in seeking healthcare or delay in receiving healthcare, including reaching healthcare facility.

He explained that part of the strategy was to mobilise women from communities to visit health facilities and ensure they have good transportation.

The coordinator added that caesarean services would also be accessed free at tertiary facilities, which would be extended to general hospitals.

“We are also ensuring that primary and secondary facilities are revitalised to deliver pregnant women safely.

“An accord was signed by the federal, state and local governments. We are all working together to ensure that no woman loses her life while bringing another life.

“We are also leveraging President Tinubu’s political will to ensure that every pregnancy is safe and every child lives beyond the age of five.”

Adeyanju said that the programme would be extended to all parts of the country.

For sustainability, he said every pregnant woman enlisted would be linked to a functional facility where she would access mama kits and a voucher to be transported to the facility for delivery.

On his part, Dr Walter Mulombo, the Country Representative, World Health Organisation, said that for children to be born healthy, a pregnant mother needs to attend at least four antenatal clinic visits.

Mulombo added that pregnant women also need to take measures and seek care when ill.

He lauded the Federal Government health insurance scheme, saying “it helps pregnant women to overcome the financial challenges of accessing healthcare.

“When children are born, they need to get immunised and they need to get all the vaccines they need to grow healthy.

“When they become adolescents, they need to have access to adolescent care, including for girls, access to HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.”

The WHO country representative also said that the MAMII programme would be a year-long campaign and urged government to continue to invest in healthcare. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Expert warns heat waves threaten health, urges caution

Expert warns heat waves threaten health, urges caution

Dr Adesida Adewumi, a Consultant Family Physician, has warned that heat waves can exacerbate mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Adewumi stressed that extreme heat had significant implications for both physical and mental well-being.

His warning followed several alerts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which had cautioned residents in various states about rising temperatures and high humidity levels, likely causing thermal discomfort across regions.

“Extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, while prolonged exposure to high temperatures can worsen long-term conditions like heart and lung diseases,” Adewumi stated.

He emphasised that vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, and people who were overweight, were at higher risk during excessive heat waves.

“Health conditions such as dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heat stroke can result from heat waves,” he added.

Adewumi also pointed out the heightened risks for pregnant women and individuals observing prolonged fasting during a heatwave, urging these groups to take extra precautions.

He advised pregnant women to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures, as excessive heat could harm both maternal health and fetal development.

“For those fasting, it’s important to rest in cool places and drink water after sunset and before dawn to avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses,” he said.

To stay safe, Adewumi recommends drinking at least three litres of water daily, taking cold baths, and cooling off by spraying water on the face or using damp towels.

He also advised wearing light-coloured clothing to repel heat and avoiding dark, heat-retaining clothes.

“Additional safety tips include avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat hours (midday to late afternoon), wearing loose cotton clothing, and using sunscreen when outdoors.

“If you must be under the sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your head,” he added.

Adewumi emphasised the importance of staying in cool or air-conditioned environments, using fans, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

He also recommended light meals over heavy, hot foods.

He called on the government to minimise the effects of heatwaves by providing cooling centres, enhancing emergency services, and investing in public infrastructure like air-conditioned public spaces and healthcare services.

He suggested that corporate organisations could assist by offering flexible work hours and providing water and cooling options in workplaces. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Plateau State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to restore and operate the Jos–Kuru rail corridor.

This milestone aims to boost economic activity, reduce transport costs, and enhance mobility in Plateau and neighbouring areas.

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang said the project was not only about trains but about restoring hope and prosperity to Plateau residents.

Represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Jatau Davou, Mutfwang thanked the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, and NRC boss, Dr Kayode Opeifa, for their unwavering support.

The Jos–Kuru line, part of the historic Kafanchan–Kuru route, will link the Western and Eastern rail corridors.

It is expected to connect communities, ease cargo movement for farmers and traders, and reduce travel costs across the state.

Initially, the service will run on a narrow gauge, but plans for a modern standard gauge network are underway nationally.

Opeifa highlighted the value of federal-state collaboration, praising Plateau’s efforts in reviving abandoned railway infrastructure.

“This partnership shows how governments can rise above politics to deliver real benefits to Nigerians.

“We are not just returning trains; we are restoring dignity, economic power, and national unity,” Opeifa said.

He said NRC would deploy a dedicated business manager in Plateau to oversee operations and ensure service delivery.

He stated the initiative would create jobs, support local businesses, and open advertising and entertainment opportunities through train services.

“We will continue to rail across Nigeria—from Jos to Borno, Aba to Port Harcourt, and beyond,” Opeifa said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Taiye Olayemi

The Taiwanese Government has called on the Federal Government to partner with Taiwan in realising President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for economic revitalisation.

Mr Andy Liu, Chief Information Officer of Taiwan’s Government in Nigeria, made this appeal during a media chat held on Monday in Lagos.

Liu said a partnership between Nigeria and Taiwan could bring immense benefits, considering Nigeria’s rich natural resources and Taiwan’s technological and digital innovation expertise.

He noted that such cooperation could drive development in key sectors such as agriculture, mining, and energy.

“President Tinubu declared during his November 2022 campaign that he aimed to transform Nigeria’s South-East into the ‘Taiwan of Africa’,” Liu recalled.

“We have never felt prouder. Taiwan stands ready to support the realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Taiwan and Nigeria are both members of the World Trade Organisation and share the values of free trade and economic cooperation.

“We are eager to work together to strengthen ties in sectors like mining, agriculture, and energy development.

“Taiwan is willing to offer technological expertise to help harness Nigeria’s abundant resources in a mutually beneficial partnership,” Liu stated.

He praised Nigeria for its strong democratic culture, noting the country’s dedication to upholding democratic values and processes.

Liu drew comparisons between Nigeria and Taiwan, highlighting their shared commitment to democratic ideals and national development.

“Nigeria and Taiwan both regard democracy and development as key guiding principles.

“Both nations believe in democratic values that ensure citizens can freely elect their leaders.

“We, the Taiwanese people, truly commend Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance.

“We also share core values such as freedom of the press and speech; our media is vibrant, just like Nigeria’s.

“Given these shared democratic ideals, cooperation between Nigeria and Taiwan should be both natural and highly complementary,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
