Cape Verde pulled a stunner in their first ever World Cup game as they hold Spain to a goalless draw on Monday in the opening game of Group H.

One of the tournament favourites Spain couldn’t find a way through debutant Cape Verde, in spite of dominating possession for most part of the game.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres came close to scoring for Spain in the opening first half, but his effort went off the bar from close range.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha stood firm to keep out goal-bound balls from Mikel Oyarzabal, Torres and Aymeric Laporte.

The introduction of Barcelona starman Lamine Yamal couldn’t result to goals for Spain, as Cape Verde remained solid at the back.

The Africans also created goal-scoring chances but were not clinical enough to cause upset.

Spain Captain Rodri said his side couldn’t take their chances as Carpe Verde defended deep.

“It just wasn’t to be; there’s little to criticise. We knew it would be a game of patience; they sat deep, we created chances, but we couldn’t score,”

“It’s difficult against such a physical, defensive side. The positive is that they barely created anything against us, but we need to improve our finishing,” Rodri added.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Cape Verde midfielder Laros Duarte, said he believes his side could get better results going forward.

“I have a good feeling moving forward because we know what we are capable of. It is realistic to start thinking now in qualifying to the next round and the feeling is good.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Spain will play Saudi Arabia on Sunday June 21, while Cape Verde will square up against Uruguay on the same day. (Reuters/NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
