Guizhou Satellite TV Explores the Guizhou Bridge Miracle

Guizhou Satellite TV Explores the Guizhou Bridge Miracle

The canyons in Guizhou are scattered and pitted; the peaks and stone forests crop up here and there. Although “no ground here is three feet flat”, the bridges raised from the ground connect the mountains of Guizhou into a man-made “plain of high-ways”. Anshun, located in the central and western part of Guizhou Province, has the reputation of “China’s Township of Waterfall”, “Township of Fortress Culture”, “Township of Batik” and “Beauty in Western China”. The Baling River Bridge in its territory is the epitome of “Integration of Bridge & Tourism” in Guizhou. The Baling River Bridge, located above the waterway of Baling River, starts from the Guanling interchange in the west, crosses the Baling River waterway, and reaches 320 National Highway in the east. It is an important part of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway (National Highway G60).

The short video series “Be My Guest · Modern Guizhou”, originally produced by Guizhou Satellite TV, invites foreign friends to Guizhou in the form of reality shows to record their real lives in the local area. In this episode, Sana, a girl from Tunisia who majors in journalism and media studies at East China Normal University, was invited to Anshun, Guizhou by her friend, Lu Yonglin, who is an “outdoor travel enthusiast”. They witnessed the magnificence of Huangguoshu Waterfall and experienced the beauty of Dishui Beach Waterfall in Guizhou. They also have enjoyed food and music in the gurgling waterfall and deeply touched by the natural beauty of Guizhou. They took a motorcycle to fly over the Baling River Bridge and experienced a “High-altitude Trek” in the suspension of the steel frame of the bridge; challenged themselves to the bungee jumping platform to experience the “Jumanji” – the world’s highest commercial bungee jumping; and listened to experienced people under the bridge telling the story of tens of thousands of bridges in Guizhou, “A bridge will fly to span the north and south, Turning a deep chasm into a thoroughfare”, and felt that the integration of the bridge and the tourism really built friendly diplomatic relations between China and the world.

“Anshun is really beautiful! I don’t want to leave here and I want to live here!” Sana said excitedly that she wanted to treasure every bit of the trip and keep the memories forever. She also hopes to have more opportunities to come to Guizhou and explore more beautiful scenery.

Empowering South Africa with Clean Energy

Empowering South Africa with Clean Energy

Within just two years, the largest clean energy power plant of South Africa has emerged out of nothing on the vast wilderness in Northern Cape. It is the 100MW Redstone concentrated solar thermal power plant constructed by POWERCHINA in South Africa, a country thousands of miles away from China.

Though miles apart, the people of China and South Africa enjoy a long-standing friendship. Thanks to Belt and Road cooperation projects such as the Redstone power plant, the two sides have deepened mutual understanding and come closer to each other through enhanced exchanges.

Relieving Power Shortage

In recent years, South Africa’s economic development has been constrained by insufficient energy supply. Power shortage has not only slowed down economic growth, but also caused the inconvenience of people’s daily life in the country.

In fact, South Africa is one of the countries most suitable for developing concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) projects in the world. Leveraging this advantage, SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd. under POWERCHINA constructed the Redstone CSP project in South Africa, the largest renewable energy investment project in the country. It is estimated that the project will generate about 480GWh of electricity for the country’s grid each year after it is put into operation, meeting the power demand of 200,000 local households at peak time and substantially boosting trade, investment and economic development of South Africa.

On October 20, 2022, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the construction site of the Redstone 100MW CSP project. He spoke highly of the project’s engineering quality, and expected the power project to begin operation as scheduled and further enhance friendship and mutual trust between China and South Africa.

Stimulating Local Development

John is an electric engineer at POWERCHINA’s Redstone project. Before joining the project, he was an electric technician in a small local company, and made a living on odd jobs. Since he began to work for the Redstone project, John has participated in vocational trainings on circuit analysis, circuit theory, electronic technology, and others. Soon, he grew from a grassroots technician into an indispensible electric engineer. With the increase of his income, his family’s living standards have greatly improved.

At present, there are nearly 1,000 local employees like John working with the Redstone project of POWERCHINA, which has created a large number of job opportunities for locals.

POWERCHINA actively implements a strategy of localization. Grounded on local resources in South Africa, it gives priority to local enterprises in terms of procurement and outsourcing. To date, the corporation has established partnerships with 50 sub-contractors in South Africa, forming a new industrial cluster in the locale.

Teaching Locals “How to Fish”

A Chinese proverb goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; Teach a man how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” To enhance local employees’ vocational skills, POWERCHINA’s Redstone project set up a welder training base. In the future, POWERCHINA will join hands with local universities to launch the “Power Plant Lecture” program, with an aim to cultivate new energy talent for South Africa’s power development.

Moreover, POWERCHINA takes an active part in the development of local communities, and always offers a helping hand to those in need in the time of crisis. One time, the head of the project received a phone call from a local community: a fire broke out in their pasture, and they needed emergency assistance. The project head immediately mobilized all resources available, and sent two spraying vehicles carrying sufficient bottled water and bread to the spot to carry out disaster relief. Eventually, the crisis was solved through joint efforts. Some local residents gave warm hugs to Chinese employees contributing to the relief effort to express their gratitude.

With the deepening friendship between the two sides, local residents aspire to an early opening of this new energy power plant. They are clearly aware that the project will provide adequate clean energy for local communities, enabling them to reduce reliance on fossil fuel while profoundly changing their lives and creating a better and more sustainable development space for future generations.

Guizhou Satellite TV released a video: A German blogger influencer checking out the “Black Technology” in Guizho

The digital economy is the future direction of development, and the data has become an important factor of production. Located in the hinterland of southwest China, Guiyang and Guian New District in Guizhou have won the reputation of “China’s Digital Valley” for taking the lead in developing the big data industry in recent years. Moreover, in order to go back to the original universe and answer many difficult questions in astronomy, the “Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope”, a major scientific and technological infrastructure construction project of China’s National “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”, was completed in the territory of Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou on September 25, 2016. Today, known as the “FAST”, it has greatly expanded the horizons of mankind, continued to explore the origin and evolution of the universe, and has also attracted many international scientific research institutions to seek cooperation.
The short video series “Be My Guest · Modern Guizhou”, originally produced by Guizhou Satellite TV, invites foreign friends to Guizhou in the form of reality shows to record their real lives in the local area. Adolf Robert Michael, a young man from Munich, Germany, was born after 1995 and is full of longing for Guizhou culture. He has become popular on the Internet because of short videos on life in the villages of ethnic minorities in Guizhou. In this episode, Adolf Robert Michael has visited the annual the International Big Data Industry Expo (hereinafter referred to as the “Big Data Expo”), experienced many “black technologies” and met the local girl Liu Yue. They went to the astronomical town of Pingtang County together to “check out” the world’s largest sinkhole discovered so far – the Dadaihe Sinkhole, getting up close and personal with the hard-won Chinese “FAST”.
“Guizhou’s science and technology has really amazed me by this time. I didn’t expect that so many powerful ‘future technologies’ lie low in Guizhou. It seems that there are not only enthusiastic and simple ethnic minorities here, but also technological products that can change future lives. I think I have discovered more than one side of Guizhou this time.” Adolf Robert Michael utter sighs of admiration unceasingly for Guizhou’s scientific and technological development. He has seen the side of Guizhou’s ethnic minorities once, now he sees the side of Guizhou’s science and technology. And he hopes to discover more aspects of Guizhou in the future.

“We were really astonished by the variety of gameplay in the deep mountains of Guizhou, as we can not only experience the ‘100m fast descending’ from the outside of the mountains, but also ‘fly over the cliffs’ from the inside, so that the continuous mountains in Guizhou remind us of a Chinese idiom- ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’.” Through this spelunking trip, DIMITRIEVA TATIANA and TARADA VALERIYA were deeply attracted by Guizhou’s unique landform and beautiful landscape. They hope to go deep into Guizhou again in the future, explore other places, and experience more of Guizhou’s natural scenery.
