President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolences to the government and people of the United States of America over the death of former President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100.

“President Carter, the 39th President of the United States, was a beacon of service to humanity, demonstrating to leaders worldwide the profound impact of dedication beyond the highest office.

“As a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and global statesman, President Carter devoted his post-presidential life to the causes of peace, democracy, and the eradication of tropical diseases.

“His unwavering commitment to these noble pursuits has left an indelible mark on the world,” President Tinubu said in a statement by Mr Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman.

He said Carter showed other leaders how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States.

“He tackled the challenges the developing world faced, from combating diseases to mediating conflicts and promoting democratic values.

“He exemplified grace, dignity, and a profound respect for humanity,” continued Tinubu.

He recalled Carter as a trustworthy and compassionate friend to Nigeria.

Tinubu lauded his contributions through The Carter Center, particularly his efforts in eradicating Guinea worm disease and river blindness in Nigeria, which have significantly improved the lives of many Nigerians.

Reflecting on Nigeria-U.S. relations, Tinubu remembered Carter’s historic visit to Nigeria in March 1978 and his three-day stay at the State House in Marina, Lagos State.

“Under Carter’s leadership, this visit marked a pivotal moment in U.S. foreign policy.

“It laid the groundwork for a pragmatic relationship between the United States and Africa, with Nigeria at its heart,” said Tinubu.

The president expressed hope that Carter’s legacy of decency, character, and humanity, both in and out of office, would continue to inspire Americans and leaders worldwide to embrace the true essence of leadership. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu has expressed joy over the re-opening of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL).

Tinubu described it as another remarkable achievement in 2024 that had strengthened Nigerians’ hope in his administration, Mr Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman, said in a statement.

“Today, the Warri Refinery returned to operation weeks after NNPC Ltd. restarted the 60,000 Barrels per day at the Port Harcourt Refinery in November.

“President Tinubu has once again expressed his administration’s determination to ramp up local refining capacity and make Nigeria a hub for downstream industrial activities in Africa,” he said.

He said the All Progressives Congress-led administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had awarded the contract for the complete rehabilitation and overhaul of the four state-owned refineries.

Tinubu noted that with the 125,000 (bpd) Warri Refinery now operating at 60 per cent capacity, his administration’s comprehensive plan to ensure energy efficiency and security was on course.

He praised the Mele Kyari-led management of the NNPCL for working hard to restore Nigeria’s glory and pride as a major oil-producing country.

“The restart of Warri Refinery today brings joy and gladness to me and Nigerians. This will further strengthen the hope and confidence of Nigerians for a greater and better future that we promised.

“This development is a remarkable way to end the year following the feat recorded earlier with the old Port Harcourt Refinery.
“I am equally happy that NNPCL is implementing my directive to restore all four refineries to good working condition.

“I congratulate Mele Kyari and his team at NNPCL for working hard to restore our national pride and make Nigeria a hub for crude oil refining in Africa,” President Tinubu said.

He enjoined NNPCL to accelerate repair work on Kaduna Refinery and the 150,000 (bpd) second refinery in Port Harcourt to consolidate Nigeria’s position as a global energy provider.

“WRPC will focus on producing and storing critical products, including Straight Run Kerosene, Automotive Gas Oil, and heavy and light Naphtha,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu’s economic diplomacy blooming – Ministers

110 total views today

By Salif Atojoko

Mr Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, says the economic diplomacy carried out by President Bola Tinubu around the world is generating the desired results.

The Minister said this while briefing State House Correspondents after a meeting with the president in Lagos on Sunday.

Edun said the president had embarked on fruitful economic diplomacy on all the continents: Brazil in South America; China and India in Asia as well as Germany and France in Europe, and elsewhere.

He said, as a follow up on economic diplomacy, he led a delegation to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, recently, to ensure the success of the developing relationship between him and Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the delegation included Sen. Abubakar Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and National Planning and Mr Wale Tinubu, a member of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council.

Others were: Ms Sanyade Okoli, Special Adviser to the President on Finance and the Economy and Mr Muhammad Abdullahi, Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (Economic Policy).

The delegation held talks with Saudi EXIM Bank, the Saudi Development Fund and the Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC) to advance ongoing conversations about their investments in Nigeria.

“Twice in the last year, Mr President has been in Saudi Arabia, had meetings with the Crown Prince and talked about trade, economic cooperation, financial cooperation and collaboration.

“We just followed up on some of those leads across the various opportunities for foreign direct investment, trade partnerships and for even financial investment,” said Edun.

He said the Saudi Agricultural Livestock Investment Company had on December 23 increased its investment in Olam by $1.2 billion.

Edun said the president had taken steps to stabilise the Nigerian macroeconomic environment to encourage such investments in the country.

The minister said the takeaways from the visit included prospective investments, foreign exchange and jobs for Nigerians.

“If you look at the demographics of Saudi Arabia, to the extent that they are investing abroad, they are not going to be exporting their people, they’re not like some of the other big, populous countries of Asia.

“So, clearly, where they invest, that is jobs for Nigerians. That’s the simplest way I would put it.

“The Olam transaction was a long time in the works; it was first discussed at the first Business Council Meeting held last year in Saudi Arabia, and it materialised this year,” said Edun.

Also speaking with State House correspondents, Bagudu said the Saudis saw in Tinubu somebody who was changing his country, just like they had transformed their own country.

He said Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, was faced with a people who believed they were wealthy, and felt entitled.

“He came as a leader and he said, well, you might be rich, you might be entitled, but our economy is not passing the right direction.

“So, he introduced reform measures, which were unusual then in Saudi Arabia; removal of oil subsidies, introduction of VAT legislation, among others.

“I have a receipt here, when I ate food, I noticed that the VAT was 15 per cent. But today, Saudi Arabia is turning into a wonderland, an amazement in investment; money is flowing,” said Bagudu.

According to him, the Saudis appreciate Tinubu, who is facing a greater challenge, but yet took on those reforms.

“You can see clear confirmation that they want to stand by this leader, because he has taken risks that are unusual and they celebrate his courage and capacity.

“For me, that is the number one achievement for our country. The relationship will blossom such that our reserves and our economic ties will improve with the kingdom,” he said.

Bagudu said he was confident that more investments would follow the engagements of the Nigerian delegation to Saudi Arabia.

On the prospects of the economy in 2025, he said the economy had turned the corner.

“I think we have made the tough choices, we have seen the worst we could see and is not unexpected.

“So, what we expect to see in 2025 is a better economy, lower inflation, more employment opportunities, more support for businesses, more infrastructure development.

“We also expect more funding of security and better security, and all those priority areas; human capital development, education, health.

“We’re sure to see more in that direction, and the quality of life will get better,” Bagudu said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

We’re getting leaders ready for volatile world – TEXEM boss

112 total views today

Thse Executive Minds (TEXEM) chief executive, Dr Alim Abubakre, says the organisation is setting strategic measures to prepare leaders for the volatile new world order.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he said the organisation has introduced initiatives designed to equip leaders with the skills, tools and frameworks needed to navigate the increasingly complex landscape.

Abubakre said a scheduled three-week programme would take place between Feb. 8 and Feb. 22, 2025 that combines dynamic live sessions with engaging virtual self-paced learning.

He said it would offer leaders actionable strategies to innovate, influence stakeholders effectively, and drive profitable growth, ensuring they thrive even in the face of significant challenges.

It has as theme ‘Resilience in a Volatile World: Inspiring Transformation Successfully”.

He said participants, engaged in a gamified learning experience through different platforms, whether watching a video, reading an article, reflecting on scenarios, or contributing to discussions, would earn points that contribute to a leaderboard.

“This leaderboard fosters healthy competition, with the top five participants celebrated weekly during live sessions and recognised with letters sent to their organisations. This approach not only drives engagement but also instills a culture of continuous learning.

“The weekly live sessions, lasting four hours, provide an opportunity to delve deeper into key themes.

“Led by renowned faculty such as Ambassador Charles Crawford, Bradley Jones, and Dr TB McClelland Jr., these sessions blend group discussions, interactive games, and faculty presentations to provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience.

“Each session emphasises how leaders can enhance their ability to innovate, influence, and adapt in volatile environments.

On the value for money of the programme, Abubakre said: “Innovation is at the core of the programme. Leaders will explore methodologies to rethink traditional business models, optimise resource allocation, and achieve scalable, profitable growth.

“For example, participants might engage in scenario-based exercises where they learn to develop agile systems that respond effectively to shifting market demands or talent challenges.

“The programme also underscores the importance of influencing stakeholders at all levels. Leaders will gain tools to build coalitions, negotiate effectively, and inspire their teams. These capabilities are particularly crucial for addressing high-stakes challenges such as talent scarcity or currency volatility.

“By fostering a mindset of adaptability and collaboration, leaders can ensure their organisations not only survive but thrive.

“What makes this programme truly transformative is its commitment to holistic leadership development.”

Some past participants of the programme shared their experience on its impact.

“I found TEXEM UK to be a very impactful and high powered platform. I’ve learned so much from the faculty here, and I believe that TEXEM UK is redefining the future of executive training and management.

“In the past few days, we’ve learned so much about resilience, about how to push our teams even in an economic downturn, and how to manage for profitability and improve performance,” -Amina Yuguga, Journalist and Group Head for Documentaries and Features, Media Trust Group, said.

For Niyi Toluwalope, Chief Executive Officer of eTranzact Group: “The programme was incredibly engaging, offering profound insights from exceptional facilitators.

“It brought together world-class professors, visionary founders, trailblazing innovators, and creative experts with unmatched expertise and rich experiences.”

Kayode Awolu, CEO, Jubilee Life Mortgage Bank also said: “The quality of the faculty is tremendous, I wonder how they were able to put together such a tremendous faculty combination; people with diverse work experience, people with diverse knowledge.

“Imagine the level of knowledge among the 3 faculty we interacted with in the last 3 days, it’s something out of the blue.”(NAN)

Tchiani: Traditional rulers, border communities refute military camp claim

By Habibu Harisu
Traditional rulers and residents of border communities in Sokoto and Kebbi states have refuted claims by Nigerien leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, that Nigeria is host to French military base and training camps.

Correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who visited border communities in the states on Friday report that there was no evidence of the claim.

Tchiani in a Christmas Day interview had claimed that Nigeria had provided a base for French soldiers near Lake Chad.

He also claimed training camps had been established for terrorists in Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, all aimed at destabilising Niger.

Findings by NAN, however, indicated that there was no training camp in any of the states bordering Niger as claimed by Tchiani.

Alhaji Aminu Aliyu, the District Head of Balle, a border community with Niger, in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State, dismissed Tchiani’s claims.

He described the Nigerien leader’s claims as baseless, saying none of his subjects had reported the presence of foreign soldiers or camps in the area.

According to another community leader, Malam Abdurahman Usman, Marake, Kurdula and Bikini communities are located between eight and 35 kilometres from Niger and residents have not sighted any military camp.

Usman stressed that residents of Balle and other communities were relating well with their counterparts in Nigerien border communities and had at no time reported military presence.

Malam Kabiru Muhammad, a resident of Ruwa-wuri community in Tangaza Local Government Area, acknowledged the presence of Lakurawa bandits some times, but not foreign military camps in the area.

” Lakurawa terrorists are being chased away by personnel of the Nigerian Army stationed in our area, but there is no foreign military camp in the area, ” Muhammad said.

Adamu Bagobiri, Yusuf Abubakar and Ibrahim Kadadi, all residents of Tangaza, also denied seeing any military training camp in the area.

They, however, urged the Nigerien leader to cement the long existing relationship between Nigeria and Niger as many engage in intermarriage and business relationships.

On his part, the Sarkin Arewan Araba, Alhaji Abubakar Yusufu, dismissed claims of a village or forest called Gaba in his domain.

NAN reports that Araba is a border community in Illela Local Government Area less than two kilometres away from Konni in Niger.

He also debunked the allegation of foreign military camp in the area.

“There is no such forest in Araba district or Illela Local Government and we are yet to see any foreigner in our villages.

” These are tea joint discussions. Instead, it is the Nigerien military operatives that have been coming into our area every night,” he said.

The district head cautioned the Nigerien leader against making baseless allegation capable of severing historic ties.

Another resident of Araba, Malam Muhammadu Danladi, said the allegation of training camps was meant to smear the image of Nigeria.

“It is a lie, there is no presence of foreigners in our community. It is just a mere allegation which is unfounded,” he said

He also said there had been a deliberate attempt by Nigerien soldiers to harrass Nigerians in border communities in the last six months.

“Their security operatives at the border areas have been harassing our people, seizing their goods for no just cause.

” Their people are, however, having free access into our country.

” They have been coming to buy goods and leave, and nobody is harassing them.

” We want our government to do something about this,” he said.

In Kebbi State, Alhaji Murtala Muhammad-Kaka, the District Head of Bayawa in Augie Local Government Area, also dismissed allegations of foreign military camps in the area.

Muhammad-Kaka described the Nigerien leader’s allegations as an attempt to jeopardise the peace and stability enjoyed by border communities in Niger and Nigeria.

Condemning the Nigerien leader’s claims as divisive, Muhammada-Kaka called for more initiatives to promote cooperation between both countries.

Muhammada-Kaka, who acknowledged the presence of Lakurawa terrorists in the area, however, commended the Nigerian Army for tackling the menace.

According to him, Bayawa community shares borders with Silane, Gidan Sami, Rundi, Karami and Binji communities in Sokoto State as well as Kwaidu and other communities in Kebbi State.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Muhammad Salah, the District Head of Kasaki, a border town in Bagudo Local Government Area in Kebbi State, has commended the Federal Government over its efforts to secure the vast borders.

Salah said no fewer than eight communities share border with Benin and Niger, with residents speaking the same Dandi dialect.

The traditional ruler said residents engage in farming activities as well as attend the weekly markets and social gatherings in the area.

According to him, communities in the border areas have interwoven relationships.

He said his mother hailed from a town in Benin Republic, adding that many of his subjects have such marital relationships.

He denied knowledge of any foreign military camp and enjoined residents across borders to live in peace with one another.

Another resident, Malam Sidi Mustapha, stressed the need for increased preparedness to address trans-border security challenges such as terrorism, banditry, smugglingas well as proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

NAN reports that Nigeria had rejected allegations made in the viral video by Tchiani, claiming collusion between Nigeria and France to destabilise his country.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said in a statement in Abuja on Thursday that the claims existed solely in the realm of imagination.

He said Nigeria had never engaged in any overt or covert alliance with France or any other country to sponsor terrorist attacks or destabilise Niger.

The minister said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Chairman of ECOWAS, had demonstrated exemplary leadership.

He said the president had kept the doors of the sub-regional body open to re-engaging Niger inspite of the political situation in that country.

” Nigeria remains committed to fostering peace, harmony, and historic diplomatic ties with Niger.

” Nigeria’s armed forces, in collaboration with partners in the Multinational Joint Task Force, are succeeding in curbing terrorism within the region,”he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Plateau’s security improved in 2024, says Mutfwang

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State stated on Friday that security in the state had improved significantly in 2024, with no major breaches reported.

Mutfwang made this remark while speaking to State House correspondents following his visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos.

“I came to see the President, who has been very concerned about the security situation in Plateau. You will recall that in 2023, around this time, Plateau State was in mourning.

“The President has been deeply concerned, and now we’ve been able to celebrate Christmas with relative peace, moving towards the New Year,” Mutfwang said.

The governor noted that the security situation in the state had improved significantly this year compared to last, due to the efforts of the security forces.

“The security forces are on the ground and doing their best.

“We have also invested heavily in technology and mobilised our communities,’’ he said.

Though acknowledging that not all challenges had been resolved, with a few incidents still occurring, Mutfwang emphasised that the overall situation was improving.

“With the support of Mr. President, I can assure you that we will not take our foot off the pedal,” he said.

He further assured the public that his administration would continue to make it harder for criminal activities to thrive within the state’s borders.

“Our goal is to reassure our people and instill confidence in Nigerians, especially those who are considering investing in Plateau.

“I want to tell them that the climate is right, the environment is conducive, and I believe that 2025 will be an even better year.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Nigerien leader’s allegations against Nigeria, antics of desperate dictator- TDF

123 total views today

By Salif Atojoko
The Democratic Front (TDF) has urged Nigerians to ignore attempts by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, the military ruler of Niger Republic, to drag Nigeria into his country’s diplomatic row with France.

The group made the call in a statement signed by its Chairman, Malam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo.

It expressed concerns that the Nigerien leader accused Nigeria of sponsoring a terrorist group causing mayhem in the northern part of the country.

“We rebuff, in strongest terms, the allegations by Niger’s military leader Abdourahamane Tchiani that Nigeria was colluding with France to destabilise his country.

“Furthermore, his claim that Nigeria seeks to sabotage the Trans- Saharan gas pipeline and disrupt agriculture in Niger Republic is ridiculous and baseless because the gas pipeline was a Nigerian initiative,” the group said.

It said President Bola Tinubu had displayed consideration for the people of Niger when he led the ECOWAS in February 2024 to lift sanctions imposed in the wake of the military coup that ousted Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023.

“We also note that President Bola Tinubu directed that the electricity supply to Niger which has been cut in response to the sanctions be restored, and the borders be opened for the people of Niger to survive.

“In addition to these humanitarian gestures, the Nigerian president has continued to ensure proper funding for the Kano-Maradi railway project which the Niger people stand to benefit from.

“It is a fact that more than any other country in West Africa, Nigeria has committed more funds and human resources to regional peace, security and stability,” said TDF.

It added that President Tinubu recently approved the payment of 53 million dollars community levies, for 2023 and up till June 2024, to ECOWAS to enhance security in the sub-region.

“This brings Nigeria’s contributions to ECOWAS and, by extension, West Africa in the last 16 years, to 1.177 billion dollars.

“So, we consider it rather absurd and irresponsible for Tchiani to accuse Nigeria of colluding with France to train and sponsor Lakurawa terrorists against his country,” TDF said.

The pro-democracy group said Tchiani wanted to use Nigeria as an excuse to divert attention from his inability to turn around the fortune of his people after overthrowing a legitimately elected government.

“Our contention is that Gen. Tchiani is simply exhibiting the traits of a desperate and sinking military dictator by making spurious allegations against Nigeria.

“So, Nigeria’s diplomatic relationship with France has become an excuse for his failure to better the lot of his countrymen and women as promised in his coup speech.

”He should, therefore, be disregarded,” it said.

According to the group, Nigeria is a sovereign country at liberty to determine its bilateral relationship with any other country just like it has never interfered in Niger’s relationship with France.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Salif Atojoko

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) says President Bola Tinubu’s maiden media chat shows he has realistic solutions to the country’s prevailing economic challenges.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary, Sunday Shedrach, the group said that the president was empathic about the efficacy of his reforms.

The group stated that “we note that in the media chat, President Bola Tinubu announced his government’s plans to procure 2,000 tractors for Nigerian farmers.

“This policy is aimed at bringing government’s agriculture mechanisation programme into effect.

“It is gratifying that he acknowledged that Nigeria could not continue with the model of agriculture practised during the days of his grandfathers.”

It added that the policy would enhance food security and ultimately reduce poverty in the land.

“Similarly, President Tinubu acknowledged the hardship inherent in the fuel subsidy but was quick to remind Nigerians that the policy has led to healthy competition, thereby making the commodity available as prices have started dropping.

“According to him, this is the hallmark of a free market economy which government is encouraging.

“He also believed that the policy has eliminated monopoly and corruption in the sector to the benefit of all Nigerians,” said TMV.

It noted that the president used the media chat to clarify many issues surrounding the fuel subsidy removal.

TMV also said that Tinubu reassured Nigerians of a brighter future, as well as government’s commitment to addressing hardships associated with the economic reforms.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu has extended condolences to the government and people of India on the death of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Singh, India’s prime minister between 2004 and 2014, died Thursday at the age of 92, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the president’s spokesman, said in a statement.

He said Singh’s official visit to Nigeria in 2007 was historic, and that he earned the honour of addressing a joint session of the National Assembly, a privilege accorded to only a few global leaders.

The president recounted the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and India under Singh’s tenure, which has continued to flourish, driving political and economic prosperity for both countries.

Tinubu further lauded Singh’s efforts to forge improved cooperation in defence trade, culture, education, health, science and technology, and ICT.

He saluted Singh’s role in steering India’s economic reforms during globally challenging times.
