IWS seeks solution to widows’ plights

By Oladapo Udom
The President, International Women Society (IWS),  Mrs Izabella Abia-Okon, says there is need to raise more awareness about widows’ issues as well as advocate better facilities and opportunities for them.

Some widows receiving digital training during the IWD celebration

Abia-Okon said this during the association’s  International Widows Day (IWD) celebration with the theme: “DigitAll Widows”, on Friday in Lagos.

International Widows Day, celebrated every  June 23, is a special day established by the United Nations (UN) dedicated to addressing the poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents.

According to her, latest statistics by the UN show that 258 million widows and 585 million children need support globally.

The president said that widows face many challenges and IWD was significant because it is a day to acknowledge the struggles of widowed women and demand better facilities for them.

“Widows Day empowers all widows by demanding better facilities and opportunities for them as well as acknowledging the struggles of widowed women.

“It also addresses the regressive mentality of people regarding women and their place in the society while advocating the upliftment of women by making them self-sufficient,” she said.

Abia-Okon said that as part of events marking the Day, widows would be trained on how to maximise opportunities with innovation and technology.

“Through this training many of you will understand the difference between working smart and working hard.

“Technology makes it easier to connect to the world and you can begin to produce goods that are marketable worldwide,” she said.

The president thanked the UN for its conscious efforts at providing sustainable succour with designated dates for the upliftment of humanity.

Also,  the Chairperson, Widows Trust Fund of IWS, Mrs Adebanke Adeola, said that the extensive opportunities digitalisation would bring to women’s businesses would further break gender barriers and accelerate equality.

Adeola, was represented by Mrs Gbemi Shasore, Trustee, IWS.

“In March this year when the UN celebrated the International Women’s Day, they decided to flag the theme ‘ DigitALL Women’ for the extensive opportunities digitalisation brings to women’s businesses as a way of further breaking gender barriers and accelerating equality.

“It called for all involved to set the stage for innovation and technology as the launch pad for the future of transformative change and sustainability.

”At IWS we immediately saw it as a unique opportunity to extend it to you who can and will embrace the kind of emancipation that will yield bigger harvests of empowerment. Creating better avenues while still empowering you in the traditional ways.

“Using technology to enhance your businesses as well as being compliant with the digital age is what is trending because it is the new method of transacting maximally and empowering yourselves optimally.

“I want to wish our widows well and pray that you continue to find favour in your businesses so you can help yourselves and your families,” Adeola said.

In her remarks, Mrs Nkoli Obi-Ogbolu, a member of IWS, said the association had  trained widows on how to use their phones to empower their businesses,  and also gave palliatives to almost 300 widows. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Fuel subsidy removal: NOA solicits NUJ FCT council`s collaboration on sensitisation

Fuel subsidy removal: NOA solicits NUJ FCT council`s collaboration on sensitisation

By Dorcas Jonah

The FCT Directorate of National Orientation Agency (NOA), has solicited the collaboration of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT council to sensitise Nigerians on the fuel subsidy removal.

The Acting Director, FCT NOA, Mrs Ijeoma Agbanusi, made the call during a visit to the NUJ FCT council office on Friday in Abuja.

Agbanusi said that it was the agency`s mandate to sensitise Nigerians on government policies and programmes, adding that Nigerians should learn to accept the deregulation of the downstream sector.

She said the collaboration with the NUJ required that the union increase its unrelenting support, to help disseminate the information to the citizens for better understanding of fuel subsidy removal.

The acting director said the fuel subsidy removal has enormous benefits in the long run.

She listed some of the benefits to include, putting a stop to the difficult challenges caused by smuggling of Nigeria’s PMS to neighbouring countries.

“It will curb the greed for higher profits and sabotage by a few players in the oil industry, which positively affect the economy.

“Subsidy removal will force down prices and control inflation as well as help government to spend greater portion of its budget meant for fuel subsidy directly on other key sectors.

“Based on the above enumerated benefits, we are appealing to Nigerians to be patient with the present government in her efforts to stabilise the economy,’’ she said.

Agbanusi called on Nigerians to cooperate with the government in the on-going adjustments on various sectors of the economy.

She urged to be vanguards and watchdogs over national infrastructural facilities and natural resources.

Responding on behalf of the council, Mr Ochiaka Ugwu, Secretary of NUJ FCT, pledged the council’s willingness to work with the agency.

Ugwu said the fuel subsidy removal had brought untold hardship to Nigerians, adding that the government needed urgent measures to cushion the effects.

The council`s scribe said the role of NOA was critical in mobilising and creating enlightenment for the Nigerian populace to understand government policies and programme.

“As a council, we will always be ready to collaborate in any area to inform Nigerians adequately because it is our duty as the fourth estate of the realm.

“We will also be ready to hold government accountable on its promises whenever it is necessary. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mrs Monilola Udoh, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs (FMoWA), gave the warning during community grassroots sensitisation on Friday in Karu, FCT, as part of the International Widow’s Day (IWD) celebration.

Udoh reiterated the commitment of the government in accordance with the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act 2005 towards ensuring that human rights of widows are protected and promoted.

“Any person who subjects a widow to harmful practices commits an offence and will be sent to prison for two years or fined N500,000 or both.

“This is a warning to communities that practice all forms of discrimination against widows.

‘The law also prohibits any person who supports someone to commit the offence. That person will also be liable to N200,000 fine or imprisonment.

“Any person that receives or assists someone to commit the offence will spend six months in prison or fined N100,000 or both,” she warned.

She said the ministry will educate women, especially widows, on access to a fair share of their inheritance, land and productive resources; pensions and social protection that are not based on marital status alone.

Udoh said the 2023 theme, ‘’Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality”, highlights a gender responsive approach to innovation, technology and digital education to increase the widow’s awareness, empowerment, rights and civic engagements.

“The Widows Hub Africa Initiative also with the Ministry is creating awareness on innovation and technology for gender equality which aligns with this year’s theme.

“This activity is to enable Widows have access to information on the importance of innovation and technology in doing business.”

The Permanent Secretary also revealed that 300 widows will be trained on using orange fleshed sweet potatoes, while 200 others will also be given some palliatives to reduce their social and economic burden.

Mrs Gloria Samuel, a widow, urged the government to protect widows rights, especially that area concerning deceased spouses’ properties, as well as punish those who engage in harmful practices against them to serve as a deterrent to others.

“They should make a law that will protect all the widows across Nigeria. I encourage widows,, especially the young ones, not to give up,” she said.

Mrs Amina Musa, widow and mother of six, said the support from the government will reduce their economic hardship and encourage them to strive hard. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Engage practioners to manage agric sector, group urges Tinubu

Engage practioners to manage agric sector, group urges Tinubu

By Justina Auta

The National Agricultural Commodities Project 2023 has urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint professional practitioners to manage the agricultural sector to achieve national food security.

The group of experts, comprising of over 70 agricultural commodities associations, made the call during a news conference in Abuja on Friday.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Alhaji Ali Baba, President, Pastoral and Livestock Feeds Association, said appointing experts from the association to manage the sector would assist in utilising agriculture for national development.

“As representatives of association comprising farmers, producers, traders and other stakeholders involved in the agricultural value chain, we recognise the significant role that agriculture plays in the development of our nation.

“With the recent strides made by the Nigerian government to prioritise agriculture and achieve self-sufficiency in food production, we believe that involving key players from the Commodities Association in decision making processes will enhance the growth and success of the sector,” he said.

Baba said ensuring representatives from the association to manage the sector would foster partnership between the government and the grassroots, as well as transformation in the sector.

“We stand ready to support, work and collaborate with the government in its efforts to achieve food security, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and propel the agricultural sector towards sustained growth and development.

“Because food security is national security and we are confident that with President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, no farmer will be left behind,” he said.

Mr John Adekoredo, the Country Director, LAWPA Nigeria, said as leaders and representatives of various agriculture commodities groups, they understand their challenges and appropriate ways to address them.

“We who understand the territory can advocate for our farmers; we have been putting our resources, our technical knowhow, connect outside the country to bring value addition in agriculture value chain.

“In recent times, policies of government are been taken without taking into cognisance people who feed the country.
“We as commodities presidents, who are voice to Nigerian farmers are saying let our farmers breathe and we can only do that when we who understand their plights are the ones in the helms of affairs holding these offices.”

Contributing, Alhaji Iliyasu Bulama, the President, National Association of Cattle Dealers, Processors and Marketers of Nigeria (NACDPAMN), said appointing members of the commodities project would aide in resolving farmers and herders clashes.

“If this is put into consideration, there will be no fighting between herders and farmers and then insecurity and banditary will be stopped.

“Because by the time you manage the herders, you put them in places where they will exercise modern farming in terms of ranches, criminality will reduce,” he said.

Similarly, Dr Sadiq Hassan-Arivi, a Security Expert, said appointing relevant stakeholders in the sector would address insecurity, boost agricultural productivity and generate revenue for the country.

“In terms of security, the present government has said that one of the new service chiefs objective and order is to make sure the farm is safe for the farmers to work.

“Issue of farmers/herders clashes and banditry will be a thing of the past.

“Also, the farmers should support the government and make sure that you are part of the agenda.

“There is no way you can talk about agriculture without the farmers and that is why the government is taking it very serious,” he said.

Mr Retson Tedheke, the President, Nigeria Farmers Group and Cooperative Society (NFGCS), highlighted that investment and capable management of the agriculture sector would create job opportunities, food, economy and cultural security.

Tedheke said: “It is an appeal to the government to put people who know how to do the job in positions to get the job done.

“Our appeal to the President, we must get outside that realm that those managing on behalf of farmers are not farmers.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Culture of financial impunity, gradually disappearing – FRC Chairman

Culture of financial impunity, gradually disappearing – FRC Chairman

By Kelechi Ogunleye

Mr Victor Muruako, the Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), says the culture of financial impunity is gradually becoming a thing of the past in the country.

Muruako made this known during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Economics Students’ Association (NESA), University of Nigeria, Nsukka to the commission on Friday in Abuja.

He said the commission which was set up by the Fiscal Responsibility Act No. 31 of 2007 and started operations in 2009, had made alot of giant strides since its inception.

“We have indeed made some landmark achievements from when we first began as a commission to where we are today.

“First and foremost, the culture of impunity is definitely disappearing and people are becoming more responsible.

“Although, corruption cannot just evaporate like that but you can see today that unlike before people are now being held accountable for whatever they do,” he said.

According to him, that in terms of budget implementation, the situation was far better than what was obtained before now.

“In the past Mr President would just release his budget speech few days to the end of the year and that is it.

“But now, with the Act and the commission as well as our engagements with the relevant stakeholders, including Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning, we now have series of activities that will definitely lead to the national appropriation.

“Like the engagement with Civil Society Groups, the Medium term expenditure framework, the public hearings that are carried out and alot of other processes,” he said.

The chairman said that all these were definite steps towards planning in such a way that national budget was no longer the way it used to be which has led to gains.

“There must be absolute planning because if you fail to plan, then you have already planned to fail,” he said.

The FRC boss said that the commission had also made alot of giant strides in the aspect of revenue generation.

He explained that the ability of the commission to come up with the template for the calculation of operating surplus that was quite acceptable, had really yielded lots of revenue.

“Earnings to the consolidated revenue funds of the Federal Government have greatly increased. I can tell you that year upon year, we have continued to improve in that area.

“We have been working in collaboration with other stakeholders, particularly the National Assembly, the Office of the Budget of the Federation, Ministry of Finance and Accountant General of the Federation.

“So if you check the quantum. For the first time in 2021, the independent revenue of the Federal Government was able to hit the trillion mark.

“This can obviously be traced to alot of activities by the commission and we are still counting,” he said.

He said that there was need to continuously embark on youth sensitization to help in instilling the culture of fiscal discipline in the lives of young citizens.

“This is because one of the problems we identified with issues of instilling fiscal discipline in public officials is that it is very difficult to change adults as bad habits die very hard.

“So, we at the commission felt that one of our key strategies is to reach out to the leaders of tomorrow who are the public-officials-to-be.

“We want to catch them young while they are still at that early stage and we started this by setting up what we call ‘Army of Fiscal Responsibility Enthusiasts’,” he said.

Godspromise Ngadi, the President of NESA, University of Nigeria, Nsukka said the association was privileged to have been impacted with so much knowledge about the activities of the commission.

“We have come to understand that one of the primary responsibility of the FRC is to harness the country’s resources, promote efficiency as well as dynamism and economic development.

“We have also been charged as fiscal responsibility enthusiasts to be disciples of fiscal accountability.

“We will cascade this message to our various institutions, homes and the society and ensure our impact is felt in the country at large,” he assured. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu has capacity to transform tourism sector – Runsewe

Tinubu has capacity to transform tourism sector – Runsewe

By Priscilla Osaje

The Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe    says President Bola Tinubu has the capacity to take the nation’s tourism sector to the desired destination .

Runsewe said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the quality and calibre of advisers the president had appointed showed his administration was ready for business.

He said  Tinubu displayed so much passion for tourism  and did so much for the sector during his tenure as governor of Lagos State.

Runsewe said Tinubu, as governor, invited  foreign experts to develop tourism in the state, in the area of hotel registration, grading, among others.

The NCAC boss said if the president had done all that as state governor, Nigerians should be ready for a turn around of  the nation’s tourism sector.

“My appeal to Nigerians is that they should be patient and take things easy with him. I  am competent to speak about what he did in the sector because I was the DG of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation at that time.

“We must be ready to see a new Nigeria, new values, new orientation and new beginning,” he said.

Runsewe, who noted that journalists were key to development of any sector, said their support  was needed to promote and move the sector forward.

He also commended Alhaji Nura Kangiwa, Director-General, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), for the recent training programme, he organised for journalists, in commemoration of the 2023 Gastronomy Festival.

He described the training as innovative and helpful as it was designed to enhance the capacities of the benefitting journalists.

“My appeal today is that we continue to partner journalists with a view to developing the sector.

“For few years now, the sector has suffered because journalists have not been  given the role they are  supposed to play.

“My view is that we work more with journalists, re-engineer and reawaken both side’s consciousness on how to  report this sector the right way” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Noodles produced in Nigeria free of Ethylene Oxide – NAFDAC

Noodles produced in Nigeria free of Ethylene Oxide – NAFDAC

By Kemi Akintokun

The National Agency of Food Drugs (NAFDAC) on Thursday said that noodles produced in the country did not contain Ethylene Oxide or its metabolism.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this at a media briefing organised to present the outcome of its investigation on whether noodles produced in the country contained ethylene oxide.

Adeyeye said the investigation was occasioned by the recall of Indomie Instant Noodles Special Chicken Flavour by Malaysia and Taiwan, on account of the alleged presence of ethylene oxide, a compound associated with an increased risk of cancer.

She said: “At the time of my initial press release on the issue, I assured the public that thorough investigation of the products would be conducted both at the factory and market levels and that our findings would be communicated.

“As soon as we received the news of the product recalls in Malaysia and Taiwan, immediately I requested the Director, Food Safety and Applied Nutrition to carry out investigation and random sampling of Indomie instant noodles from the production facilities.

“And extend the investigation to other brands of instant noodles offered for sale to Nigerians.

“Imported noodles are not expected to be sold in Nigeria because NAFDAC does not register imported noodles as a result of the ban by the Nigerian government many years ago to foster local production.

“Samples of chicken flavoured instant noodles of various brands and the seasonings were drawn from the production facilities across the country to ensure robust investigation.

“A total of one hundred and fourteen (114) samples of instant noodles and the seasonings were received, while samples were also colleted from Lagos, Abuja and Kano”.

Adeyeye said that findings show that Ethylene oxide or its derivative was not found in any of the instant noodles produced in Nigeria and their seasonings.

She said, “the compound of interest, ethylene oxide, is a colourless, odourless gas that is used to sterilise medical devices and has been implicated as a cancer-causing chemical.

“We did not only analyse for ethylene oxide and its derivative 2-chloroethanol in the noodles and seasonings, we also analysed for other contaminants such as mycotoxins and heavy metals in the samples”.

According to her, the delay in the analytical activities in the laboratory is not deliberate, adding that the agency placed orders for the procurement and supply of certified reference materials (standards), reagents and chemicals from overseas.

She reassured Nigerians that the agency would continue to remain proactive and committed to its responsibilities of protecting the public health. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
