The 2025 edition, with the theme ‘PlayForPurpose’, received support from sponsors including NoOnes, BFA Sports, Puma, and Power Horse.

Italy cracks down on violence against referees

Italy cracks down on violence against referees

By Ijeoma Okigbo
Referees in Italy will now receive the same legal protection as police officers and other public officials, Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said.
He said that this will help curb the rise in cases of assault in sports such as soccer.
A change to the penal code will mean much tougher penalties, include potentially jail, for acts of violence against match officials, including pushing, hitting, or threatening.
The move follows months of discussions between the government and the Italian Soccer Referees Association.
The law, part of a decree approved by the Italian government late on Friday, extends protection to all officials responsible for ensuring sporting fixtures are conducted fairly.
Abuse towards match officials at all levels of Italian soccer has become a growing concern.
In December, Serie A referees highlighted the issue by wearing black smudges on their cheeks during matches as a symbol of protest.
In one notorious example last season, 19-year-old referee Diego Alfonzetti was attacked when he took charge of a youth match in Sicily.
Alfonzetti was invited on to the pitch alongside the match officials before the Lazio-Rome Serie A derby in April as an act of solidarity. “Sport is loyalty and sharing.
“Those who do not accept it are warned: from tomorrow violent behaviour and aggression against referees will be punished without delay, even with prison,” said Senator Andrea Ostellari, a junior justice minister. (NAN/Reuters) (www.nannews.ng)

Nigeria names squad for African Fencing Championship

Nigeria names squad for African Fencing Championship

By Vivian Ahanmisi

The Nigeria Fencing Federation has named a 12-member squad for the 23rd African Fencing Championships to be held at Charterhouse Lagos from June 25 and 29.

This marks only the third time the championship will be hosted in Sub-Saharan Africa, after editions in Senegal (2002) and Mali (2009, 2019).

According to the Nigeria Fencing Federation, leading the team is U.S.-based Inkosi Brou, Nigeria’s first international fencing medallist.

Brou, aged 17, recently won bronze at the 2025 African Junior Championships in Angola, bringing valuable experience to the national team.

He has participated in several global tournaments this year, working towards qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Brou is also the grandson of the late NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Dora Akunyili.

Also on the squad is UK-based Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye, along with homegrown fencers Wisdom Okanlawon and siblings Mahatir and Mahadi Idongesit.

Other male team members include Olumuyiwa Ige, Oritsematosan Egbesemirone, Alex Chizim Aninyei, and Babade Adegbola.

The women’s squad comprises Peluola Akinbamiro, Somto Eribenne, Sara Idongesit, and Adebodunrin Thomas.

Team Nigeria will contest both individual and team events in the three fencing disciplines: foil, epee, and sabre.

National coach Ibrahim Alogba expressed optimism, noting that the team’s youthfulness could be an advantage.

“Our team is young in age and experience, which lowers pressure. We may surprise stronger teams.

“We are not afraid of reputations or records. This generation is ready to end Nigeria’s medal drought,” he added.

Italian coach Riccardo Bardin, who joined the team a week ago, praised the athletes but stressed the need for patience.

Besides Nigeria, other countries competing include Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, and Benin Republic.

Others are Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria, Senegal, Mauritius, Angola, Rwanda, Niger, South Africa, Guinea, Libya, Burkina Faso, and Cape Verde.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the championship will feature 12 events: six individual and six team contests in foil, epee, and sabre. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

NSSF table tennis championships begin in Lagos

NSSF table tennis championships begin in Lagos

Vivian Ahanmisi

The maiden edition of the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) National Table Tennis Championships will begin on Monday at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The two-day event will feature students from across the country competing for honours, as the NSSF continues efforts to revive grassroots sports and identify young talents.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the championship is part of a broader NSSF strategy to engage youths in sports and promote early athletic development.

It also seeks to identify, train, and nurture future table tennis stars who can represent Nigeria at major continental and global competitions in the coming years.

Funsho Usman, Secretary General of the NSSF, said on Sunday that the tournament was designed to give students real match experience, which is critical to their long-term development.

He explained that by competing under structured rules, young players would better understand the demands of professional-level sport, helping to bridge the gap between school and elite competition.

“We are fully aware of Nigeria’s rich sporting potential, especially among the youth who often lack platforms to express and develop their talents.

“At the NSSF, we believe in creating equal opportunities for all students, regardless of background, to showcase their skills and be given a fair chance to succeed.

“This championship is not just about crowning winners; it is about providing visibility, recognition, and a pathway for every participating student,” Usman said.

He stressed that the competition aligns with the NSSF’s mission of ensuring students are prepared to transition from school-level sports to international representation.

Usman also confirmed that invitations were sent to schools and state teams nationwide, ensuring wide participation and fostering national unity through sport.

He said the championship would be closely monitored by certified technical officials and national team scouts, to help identify and track promising players for future training.

“By involving national-level coaches and scouts, we’re ensuring that emerging talents receive the right exposure and support from the very beginning of their journey,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Shaibu attributes appointment to divine favour, vows to deliver on Tinubu’s mandate

Shaibu attributes appointment to divine favour, vows to deliver on Tinubu’s mandate

By Usman Aliyu

The newly appointed Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has described his appointment as a product of divine favour.

Speaking during a special thanksgiving service at the St. Paul Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin on Sunday, Shaibu promised to align his leadership with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The new director-general, who is the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo, appreciated Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of reforming and repositioning the nation’s foremost sports training institution.

“I consider this appointment not just an honour, but a divine arrangement. It is a call to national duty and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to youth and sports development in Nigeria,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event drew a distinguished audience, including Deputy Governor of Edo, Dennis Idahosa.

In his remarks, Idahosa congratulated Shaibu, describing his appointment as well-deserved and a testament to his resilience and dedication to public service.

The deputy governor expressed confidence that the former deputy governor would reposition the NIS for greater national impact.

“I have no doubt that Philip Shaibu will deliver. His track record speaks for itself, and I believe the National Institute for Sports is in good hands,” Idahosa said.

Shaibu, in response, assured that he and Idahosa would remain exemplary ambassadors of Edo.

He pledged to champion policies that would reflect the state’s progressive values and further Nigeria’s sports development goals.

The ceremony was followed by a reception at Shaibu’s residence on Adeyan Avenue, where friends, political associates, and supporters gathered to celebrate the milestone. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

LGAN North zone golf championship to promote peace, unity, organisers say

LGAN North zone golf championship to promote peace, unity, organisers say

By Victor Okoye

Organisers of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) Northern zone Golf Championship, say the tournament aims to use golf as a tool to promote peace, unity and well-being in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 250 golfers from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja have converged in Minna, Niger  for the tournament.

The 18-hole lush green course of the Minna Cantonment Golf Club will play host to the championship as the participants slug it out for honours over the next three days.

Lami Ahmed, the 1st Vice president of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), told NAN that the objective of the  championship was to promote unity, peace and well-being through golf.

Ahmed said it also aimed to motivate women to embrace the game and also to increase LGAN’s scope of exposure to the different golf courses in the North.

“We want to be able to show that when we talk about promoting unity, peace, and well-being through golf, it can happen anywhere.

“The inspiration to organise this prestigious championship in Minna came from our president, Evelyn Oyome, who has been preaching about the need for us to embrace inclusiveness.

“She has always stressed the need for us to spread the good news of golf to women so as to increase our membership.

“So, we decided that rather than just staying and enjoying ourselves at the capital, Abuja, it was important for us to share the good news up north.

“This is for women who do not believe that we can play this game, perhaps some of them have never seen a lady in a golf attire before.

“That’s why we decided to go to Kano in 2024, and Minna this year,” she said.

Ahmed noted that the tournament was the first-of-its-kind as it is the first time a zonal open championship was being held in Minna.

“This is because we must spread the good news, and we must give opportunity to every corner of this country and particularly every part of the north.

“We want to motivate women to embrace the game and also to increase our scope of exposure to the different golf courses we have in the north,” she said. (NAN)

Super Eagles stars inspire kids at ‘Maracana’

Super Eagles stars inspire kids at ‘Maracana’

By Olanrewaju Akojede

Some Super Eagles players on Saturday attended the 2025 Maracana Children’s Fest, held in honour of their teammate, Wilfred Ndidi.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the annual event, sponsored by Leicester City midfielder Ndidi, was hosted at the refurbished Maracana Stadium in Tolu, Ajegunle, Lagos.

Super Eagles stand-in captain William Troost-Ekong and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen were among the top players who graced the event, attended by at least 3,000 children.

Others present included Frank Onyeka of FC Augsburg, Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen, Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge and ex-international Jonathan Akpoborie.

The children showcased their football skills across 19 five-a-side pitches, thrilling both guests and spectators at the stadium.

The crowd went wild when Osimhen, former African Footballer of the Year and Turkish League top scorer, made his entrance.

Children screamed Osimhen’s name with joy, visibly excited by the rare opportunity to meet him in person.

Speaking at the event, Ndidi expressed gratitude and fulfilment for giving back to the community where his football journey began.

“I feel amazed and happy. This competition has improved over the past two years. We usually hold it in June or December.

“The smiles on the kids’ faces are heart-warming. It is something they truly look forward to every year.

“As a child, I loved watching football on TV, but seeing players in real life was always more exciting for me.

“That’s why we invited the Super Eagles players — to create that magical moment for the children.

“The children are clearly excited to see the Super Eagles. It gives them hope and inspiration for the future.

“We want to focus more on the kids, investing in their future. Seeing someone like Osimhen means a lot to them,” the Super Eagles star said.

Ndidi said the choice of Maracana Stadium was deliberate due to its legacy in producing Nigerian football stars.

According to him, Ajegunle has produced many stars, including Odion Ighalo, adding that Maracana Stadium was a famous football ground while he was growing up.

“Though I never played here as a child, I knew its importance. This project helps preserve Maracana’s legacy.

“Our aim is to keep Maracana’s name alive and continue to inspire future champions from Ajegunle.

“The presence of Super Eagles players shows their support for the project. No one was forced — they came willingly,” he said.

Ndidi appreciated his teammates’ turnout, saying it meant a lot to the children and the community.

“I’m grateful to see my teammates here today. The children got the chance to meet and interact with them.

“We’ve identified talented kids already. But it’s important to remind them to stay in school.

“They mustn’t abandon education for football. School is essential, no matter how talented they are,” he added.

Programme coordinator, Yemi Idowu, praised the players’ commitment in spite of their demanding schedules.

“I’m excited. It was hard aligning everyone’s timetable, but they still honoured our invitation.

“They came because it’s a worthy cause. Taking time out shows their genuine commitment.

“This is the first time seven Super Eagles players are attending together. More could have come if not for the weather,” he added.

Idowu said the event achieved two major milestones: showcasing a multi-pitch facility and players giving back to society.

“We’ve shown that multi-pitch facilities are possible. All 19 pitches hosted over 3,000 kids simultaneously. The games went smoothly across the pitches without congestion or issues.

“National players can contribute to society by engaging directly with children like they’ve done today.

“They brought their own kids too. Osimhen, Troost-Ekong, and Wilfred were all outstanding. This is a space where players can come freely, without fear of harassment or pressure.

“They gave us their time, which is even more valuable than money. That means everything.

“We’ve done this kind of programme for over 40 years. The next one will take place during Christmas,” he said.

Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), Oladotun Coker, also commended the event.

“This initiative is commendable. It’s a brilliant way to promote grassroots football development.

“The children were able to meet their heroes face-to-face. That moment will stay with them forever.

“LSFA will always support initiatives like this. It is indeed a laudable effort,” Coker added.

NAN reports that dignitaries at the event included Mr Fatai Ayoola, Chairman of Ajegunle Development Council, traditional rulers, and football enthusiasts. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Gatefield advocacy group urges gender-equality in sport sector

Gatefield advocacy group urges gender-equality in sport sector

By Aderogba George
Gatefield, a public strategy and advocacy organisation based in Nigeria, has called for gender-equality in the sport sector.
Ms Shirley Ewang, the Advocacy Lead personnel for Gatefield, said the call followed a new documentary titled “The African Giants” which celebrated the Super Falcons.
She noted that the documentary sparked constructive and vibrant conversations on gender inequality in the sporting sector, hence the need for a call to action.
She added that “the African Giants tells the powerful story of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s most successful national football team, and the inequities they continue to face despite global successes.

“This new documentary offers unfiltered look into the lives, victories and struggles of the Super Falcons. The film centres on star players — Michelle Alozie, Rasheedat Ajibade and Asisat Oshoala.”

She said that the film captured the players personal reflections and the team’s collective call for fair recognition, equal pay and stronger institutional support.

Ewang said that “the Super Falcons are Africa’s most decorated national football team, yet they continue to battle chronic underfunding, lack of visibility and systemic gender disparities in sport.

“African Giants not only celebrates the team’s legacy but confronts the harsh realities of what it means to represent a country.

“Nigerian women have always shown up, even when the system shows they are not a priority.”

She noted that inclusion and equality must be intentional and prioritised.

She pointed out that the film is part of a broader campaign to raise awareness about the gender gap in different fields, especially sports, and that the aim is to inspire young people, policymakers and the public to rethink what support for women should truly look like. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Wike to upgrade IBB Golf Club to international standard

Wike to upgrade IBB Golf Club to international standard

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the IBB International Golf and Country Club will be renovated and upgraded to international standard.

Wike disclosed this when he visited the club in Abuja on  Saturday, to assess the facilities.

He said that the renovation would begin with the Club House, where golfers wine, dine and unwind stress, under emergency intervention.

The minister added that the other sections of the club would be renovated and upgraded in phases.

He said that the renovation would be handled by Julius Berger construction company, which built the facilities in 1991.

He said that the club would remained closed until the renovation was concluded, in order to prevent it from degenerating.

“It is better we put the place in order quickly, so that when people come in, they will have where they can relax, have their drinks and rest.

According to him, making the club a tourist centre will attract investments.

“However, I want to advise the Board of Trustees (BOT) to initiate some innovative ideas for revenue generation to maintain the club instead of depending wholly on the government,” he said.

The minister explained that the BoT and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) were constituted to manage the club as government property.

He said that the step became necessary because government is not a good manager of facilities.

He urged the BoT and the IMC members to work as a team towards uplifting the standard of the club to international standard.

“That’s why we will not allow anybody to take what belongs to us. We will not allow that.

“Any move to sabotage what we are doing will not be tolerated,” he said.

Earlier, the BoT Chairperson, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, appealed to Wike to renovate the club and upgrade its standard to be at par with the rehabilitated Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

Dongban-Mensem, who is the President of the Court of Appeal, recalled that the club was built by the Federal Government and opened to the public in 1991.

She added that the club, which began with 29 members, has, at the moment, 5,000 members using same facilities.

She pointed out that the facilities at the club has worn-out due to excessive use over the years.

According to her, if upgraded, the  facility will become a tourist attraction site and in the long run, boost the economy of the country. (NAN)
